  • Here is my first quick look at this year's release of the #47 Viper from Great Eastern Cutlery.
    I have the Northfield Hemlock Jig Bone, the Northfield Smooth Oiled Bone (SFO), and the Northfield Snakewood. If you want one of these, you should look quickly because they are rapidly disappearing from the GEC official dealers' websites!
    Closed Length: 3 7/8"
    Blade Steel: 1095 Carbon Steel
    Handle Materials Shown: Hemlock Jig Bone, Smooth Oiled Bone, and Snakewood
    Half Stop: Yes
    Model Number: 470116

    Nice video, I have the hemlock version and really like it. The tip is so thin with those precisely cuts swedges, makes for excellent piercing capabilities. Thank you for sharing

    All are beautiful but the first one is my favorite. The blade is wonderfully designed. Wait..... WAIT! I like the second one best! Yep, definitely the second one! Love the white, smooth bone. I wonder if GEC ran out of their famous "primitive bone" of several years back? THAT was some of the finest scale material I've ever seen! Stunning stuff!

    They should offer rehab facilities for those of us who can't afford to collect GEC knives! My goodness, they are beautiful!

    Congrats on getting 3 fabulous knives. ( Your camera work is fine, but the really dim light is a bit of a bummer.) That's suppose to be called "OILED Bone".....not "old bone". They may have even misspelled it on the tube cap. Soaking the un-died natural bone in oil is how it gets that beautiful semi-translucent depth with character. I was quick enough to get in a very early reserve on the Snakewood with Mike. Early enough I was able to get one without the cracking problem. It's not that the Snakewood is a "weak" or "soft" wood........quite the opposite. Snakewood is among the very hardest wood there is, and depending on which wood-worker you talk to, some swear it is the hardest of all woods, but overall, definitely in the top 4. I believe the hardness also varies from piece to piece in all wood, and moisture content, etc. The problem is, the harder wood is, the more brittle. ( Much like steel, where a fine balance must be achieved through heat treat & temper.) The lanyard tube hole is so large & so close to the edge, many cracked. But if ya notice most knives with lanyard holes, even man-made materials, can and do eventually crack in that same location. Just look at all the old Remington trappers. Only the Tidioute versions of the Viper are easily pinchable to open, due to the smaller hand-drawn swage. My Snakewood Viper makes my 10th Viper! ( Yes, I am a very sick man, lol.) Thanks for sharing, you have 3 beauties there my friend. :-)

      Thanks for the clarification on the wood qualities. There certainly was a lot of hear-say going on about the exact issue cause. Its funny that you mention the oiled bone. In my mind I was saying that, but listening back it turns out that when I say "oiled" it sound like "old". Who knew?
      As for the light, you are right. I can't sneak a video in at dusk and get away with it. Better lighting next time - thank you for watching!

    I have a rosewood coming tomorrow. Just wondering how is the sharpness out of box/tube?

    • @jprime84
      @jprime84  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would call it about average for GEC. Mine do not shave hair out of the tube, but cleanly slice paper. Grinds are nice and even. Thanks for watching!

      EXTREMELY RARE GEC #47 swayback VIPER knife!!!! Beautiful Brown Snakeskin acrylic handles, unique mid stop, different lighting on this knife reflects gold like/bronze/ copper glossy luster type shine, very beautiful!!! The maker only had a handful of this snakeskin material possibly from germany, and couldn't get anymore, so this is most definitely a one off design. I've taken out once to sharpen and I didn't think I would do it right, so after a few glides on my sharpener, I decided to wipe with a microfiber cloth n put away, the blade has three hair of a hair of a hair almost non seeing lines on tip of blade which does not take away from its beauty, I'm sure mother's polish or knife dealer could buff it out I just haven't had time. A very rare investment, discontinued, hard to find and sought after. I'm ok parting with due to house redecorating, my loss your gain. Pictures do not do any justice, it’s very cool, 3D like!
      $250 OBO is my asking price, PayPal or moneyorder is fine, serious inquiries only! Text for faster reply to 20eight-2five2-two12two. Thank you for your time!

    What's the best place to go for GEC knives? Having trouble finding places with a good selection.

    • @jprime84
      @jprime84  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jeremiah - part of the trouble is many new releases sell out quickly. You can check their website for upcoming releases and which dealers will have them. Many dealers have email lists you can get on for early notice too.

      Thanks! So do they just do random batches of their older patterns?
