Here’s a few tips on how to get a professional finish and sharp paint lines. The outside of this cabinet is veneer with Hawaiian monkey pod from GL Veneer glveneer.com/ and has a painted finish on the inside. I hope this video helps you achieve a professional finish on your projects.

Another good tip with Frog Tape is once you've applied it, take a damp towel and go over the edge of it. The water activates the sealant in the tape and once that's dried for a few minutes, you should get no paint bleeding under. Cabinet looks great by the way!
Thanks Mike! That’s a great tip… definitely going to give it a try
Yep, I think that’s the key, damp rag over the edge. Yellow frog tape is the best!
Or just a little more poly.
Thank you for sharing Jon, sometimes I have evenings where I just binge watch your videos.
Good watching

That’s awesome! Thanks Gary I appreciate it!
That cabinet came out really nicely. That monkeypod wood has such a distinctive, highly figured grain pattern.
Thanks! It really does and works great with darker woods like walnut dot this cabinet will have a walnut base
Looking forward to the podcast continuing with you and Jeff! Sad to see Rob retire. Will definitely miss him.

Thanks Chris, that’s for sure, Rob is a great guy… I’m sure he’ll stop by the shop and podcast from time to time
Amazing work!!
@@TorresSidney thank you!
Just did this project a few months ago (small two-shelf bookcase). Harder than it looks but love Waterlox and those screw+ply support thingies. Jon, a suggestion: Waterlox now has a variety of different finishing products and I was confused over the best choice. You might consider reintroducing Waterlox to newer fans and suggest the best product choices.
Thanks Jack! I always use the original… sometimes these companies make things too confusing by offering too many options. Water lox is definitely one of my go to for oil base finishes.
Great video Jon...🤘🤘🤘
@@danyodice1048 thanks Dany!
Sharp looking wood choice. The Waterlox was a good choice too. It’s amazing how that final whisper thin coat of Waterlox brings the finish to perfection and it’s so easy to apply.
I used their Universal Tung Oil Sealer and Original Satin for my cherry kitchen cabinets. The sealer has a nice ambering effect on the cherry.
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for everything.
Thanks! Definitely… nothing like an oil finish to bring out the beauty of wood
Beautiful work, Jon! Awesome looking piece! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks, you too!
Beautiful piece, Jon, and thanks for all the helpful tips.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful!
Looks great.
Thanks!
Absolutely gorgeous cabinet Jon!!! I think I would paint inside the box before applying the solid wood edge banding and even the veneer for that matter. I'd just be careful not to get paint anywhere there is going to be glue for the edge banding. Perhaps there's a reason you prefer to paint it afterward though. Regardless, it turned out beautiful as do all your projects!
Thanks! That could work, but I wanted to paint to come to the edge of the cabinet
THANKS FOR ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO
When can you simply clear-coat/seal the whole thing with paint and stain? Anything but latex paint? Do most clear sealers work on any and everything?
I have stuck to simple finishes. Milk paint with boiled linseed oil on top. Shellac of on bare wood. Want to get spray lacquer. Love how lacquer keeps drawers and cabinets easy to clean.
beautiful wood!
Thanks!
That’s excellent!
Thanks!
Really great work, Jon!! Thumbs up. Love all your work with Jeff. I see you have the Bloxygen out. Do you use it on the Genjamin Moore paint cans?
Thanks Chuck! No just on the water lox… works great on oil-based paints and finishes 👍
A couple of items. First, did you use the Water lox sealer/finish for all coats, or use that first, then finish with the satin? Secondly, I know I told you this before, but it was a long time ago. Whenever applying masking, even Frog tape, using a flexible, clean putty knife with a slightly sharpened edge, etc, and while pulling the knife across the tape, press down. You will add more pressure than your fingers, and the tape will lay flatter. This should eliminate at least most if not all bleed. It’s especially useful if you’re taping into corners. The knife is also great for cutting the tape square. I typically use a two inch knife. The cabinet looks great, too.
Thanks, great tips on the frog tape… I use the Waterlox original.
expo has a brown that is lighter then sharpie , works great on miter cut ends,
Thanks! I’ll check it out 👍
Looks good, Jon. I was surprised that you painted the inside edge of the zebrawood. I'm not saying it's good or bad, I'm just surprised.
Bill
Thanks, Bill! Yeah, I know what you’re saying but really no way around it to get the look I was going for.
I noticed a 4:25 you were pulling the tape at an angle towards the painted surface. It looked to me like you got better results pulling the tape away from the painted surface Look at 4:46.
I’ll have to take a look… I’m not sure it makes a difference
Good tips John…notice the eyeglasses for the straight line.
Thanks 😂😂😂 starting to have to break out the cheaters from time to time
I wonder how it would look if you had put the tape along the back edge of the edge banding instead of the front corner.
Could look good… little different but also good
I just spray the panels before assembly
I’m not sure if that would work in this case… Meaning I don’t think I could achieve the same look
My problem with brush painting is with all the care I give it, it will still glob, drip, and run on me.
I'm a professional painter 40 years. If a very good paintbrush doesn't solve those problems...............
@@Jack-es9xq Oh it’s me for sure. I’m just not a good painter.
There’s definitely pluses and minuses to brushing … one of the things I like is easy cleanup and no overspray. I’m having good results with this Benjamin Moore command. I think Monday Jeff and I are shooting a video on how to Spray general finishes Enduro… I haven’t tried it yet, but it looks pretty good.
@@JonPetersArtHome I've had good luck with GF products and looking forward to it, but I always get confused what can be tinted and by whom and what shades you can get, so that might be something to cover in the video.
