love this insightful interview ! It is so sad and heartbreaking that music became a business. Marriages and divorces are big business everything is though. I love listening to Mary Travis and she was so gracious in this interview. I did have a love and hate due to the painfulness of it all relationship with blood on the tracks songs and probably not the only one either. masterpiece album just the same. thanks for posting this amazing interview. Beautiful Mary Travis passed away in 2009 and gone too soon.

May be my favorite interview of his. Two artists, mutual admiration. You can hear the respect in his voice and she is just as confident as he is, which is very rare.

Note how Bob says, somewhere after minute 8, that "Richie Havens is the King!". This was after he said that no one else should sing Just Like a Woman but me, and Mary reminded him of Richie's version, then Bob added that he liked Richie's version.

    • @ulpana

Quite revealing how the Hibbing, MN common kid made good so quickly and in a blink of an eye internalized the privileged perspectives of royalty. That was the image, a King, to describe one of the most naturally humble and unaffected artists to emerge from the salt of the earth 'hoods of those island boroughs of NYC.
Richie Havens kept doing benefits (and not those in stadiums, but high school auditoriums for local organizers like Middle East Childrens' Alliance in Berkeley) without ever accepting the trapped perspectives of "stardom," not even by local attention and what L. Cohen called the "corruptions" of show biz where the touring "star" or "attraction" is treated like royalty for being part of the Distraction Industry.
Blessings upon Richie Havens and Mary Travers' souls (Arlo Guthrie & family too) and they are a blessing and antidote to those who remain tethered to gravity and the rest of US. A balm for those who keep their presence and works in our midst instead of being errand boys and girls to the feudal lords manufactured like Coca Cola and napalm in our hollowed out cornucopia of another normalized homelessness nation.
Where our invading armed forces that get all of our surplus funds goes to displace others and where the military code of the Marines is "We leave none of our own behind on the battlefield..."

Wow. Another gift from the Gods. I think Albert Grossman just dropped his harp on my head. Although I'm pretty familiar with the monetary cost's of indulgence's for a blessing from a priest in Medieval Europe, I don't know what the going rate was for miracle's on Noah's long march. But to think that UTube clips like these are "FREE" with just an internet connection...….
The Musical Pantheon's members of the Elysium Clouds allowed Mary to live a full life here with us all, before she joined Bill and Albert amongst her other heavenly colleagues. Thank You Route.
I feel a Dragon is near. I can't recall it's name because their is a very loud old train approaching. It's always an honour Mr. Dylan.

Clinton Heylin has lived in Dylan's archives digging up what went down in Dylan's personal and creative world of being an artist and musician. He still hasn't figured out everything "Bob Dylan" after writing several books and even after the last one, isn't complete he still hasn't completed researching Bob Dylan in the archives . Bob Dylan wasn't meant to be figure out and never will be. Creativity is what Bob Dylan gave to the world and when the attention is placed upon unravelling the mysteries of Bob Dylan's inner world then the music suffers.

decades past I was hitching across the country like so many during that period, long story short I got a ride off a very bad exit ( it was bad cuz few used it) being a long time fan of his I immediately recognize Bob behind those shades and that voice that said you wanna ride? it was a old station wagon with some camping gear no visible sign of a guitar in sight and a large dog he called "Elvis" He was still smoking cigarettes then, thank God cuz I was a heavy smoker myself and he had a carton of camels and right away gave me two packs which I thought was very cool not too long after picking me up we stop @ dinner along side the road got to talking about my direction I was heading to his surprise I said I was drifting around he then offer me a ride along east for a couple days all expenses free/ the first nite he got a couple of rooms, I'm guessing so I would shower the next nite was beneath some stars in the parking lot of a dive bar/tavern/ when he let me out on a freeway exit he gave a harmonica in the key of c, a pack of camels, he drove off/stop/ backed up / got out of his car walked up to me and said, "Elvis said to give you a couple dollars"which turn out to be more than a hundred, I waved good bye to Elvis and Bob

When Mary wasn't singing she would've been a great late-night FM radio disc jockey. Her voice is almost Alison Steele (WNEW-FM) in tone. I always liked Mary Travers...but not so much Peter, Paul & Mary. I didn't understand why her 4 Warners' solo LPs weren't better promoted. Bob Dylan himself should've produced an LP for her. She always had a wonderful singing voice, but not always the wisest choice of material. Success sometimes comes down to who produces the record.
(I can't get over how wonderful her voice sounds on radio and during this interview. A radio station should've made her an offer. I know I would've if I were in that position. A big opportunity missed).

You just don’t do that; it’s a terrible trespass. I don’t blame him for being galled about it, particularly with the kind of music he wrote. His songs had deep meaning and shouldn’t have been used by others to merely sell records.

@@lancejohnson127 I don’t remember making that comment or viewing this clip as it was 2 years ago but I can tell you that NOBODY is in Bob Dylan’s stratosphere regarding songwriting or his impact on popular music . So if some lady from a hit pop act from the 60’s is comparing herself in any fashion to Dylan , I stand by my comment. Bob was leaps and bounds more and influential than any of em . Even the Beatles and Jerry Garcia were star struck by Bob in the 60’s… same with Johnny Cash and probably even Elvis . So the nice lady from Peter Paul and Mary may have been FABULOUS in her day, if she compared herself to Bob , I stand by my statement. And no I’m not a mellinial .
