For over sixty years I had the idea that if I couldn't immediately make something look the way I wanted to, I couldn't draw. Thank goodness for TH-cam and people who are sharing ways to PRACTICE and improve my drawing. I have always had a desire to draw -- now I have a reason to draw, and with your tutorials I am learning the WAY to draw. Can't thank you enough.
After watching only a few of your videos I am rapidly increasing my drawing ability. I never took the time to learn the fundamentals because it always seemed so boring. Your videos are concised and full of practical information, making them easy to digest. I feel like I leveled up every time I watch one and now I'm drawing more than ever. MUCH GRATITTUDE!
Same ever since I have seen his videos I have also been leveling up very helpful something about it opened my eyes and helped me break down something I found difficult before into simpler one
I can't tell you how excited I am about finding your tutorials! I have bought books on drawing with ink, and technical pens, to no avail! You just got to have someone showing you. Please don't ever quit! I am committed to practicing your techniques ( and I'm 57!) :) Thank you so much!!
Alphonso: As an owner of your Workbook, I think I have a good suggestion for you. I would love to see a PDF of just textures. Just like the ones in your Workbook and shown here. I love sitting in front of the TV and using various pens, just filling a small rectangle with textures. Shaded, flat, intricate. Doesn't matter. Seeing your linework helps me immeasurably. Can't wait to see the next book. I think a PDF for $10 would be a great value just to have these at hand.
I didn't know I could draw cubes of things, like grass, wood, etc..., and have them actually look like what I wanted. This is grea. So glad I found this channel.
Alphonso's teaching here has real depth, yet so accessible. So impressed I bought the book, Pen & Ink Drawing. Such a great investment ... better than classes I've been to, my drawing has already improved. This kind of quality teaching encourages you to develop and put in the practise needed to improve your drawing. I can't thank him enough for his lovely generosity in providing these videos.
I am a woodworker and am working on drawing skills to be able to scketch out ideas and to be able to add my own flourishes for inlays and such. You explain what you are doing better than anyone else I have seen. Your videos are great, and this one in particular is super useful. Good job. I have subscribed.
Not only are you a very talented artist but you are also a very gifted instructor! I've been working my way through your tutorials and have had so many ah-ha moments while doing so. I was starting to lose my motivation for learning with other people's tutorials since many skip steps and important building blocks and/or do such a poor job of explaining and illustrating the lesson. Your tutorials are clear and concise and the lesson you're teaching is easy to understand. You have renewed my fire for learning! I just ordered your book and look forward to working my way through the rest of your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, providing such a wonderful and truly helpful resource for learning!
he talks to teach us idiot, this is perfect, this guy is like a real art teacher at a school and it cant get better then him. Much respect to this man for doing these videos for us all. Also to the owner.. dont listen to idiots, stay speaking non stop it helps us understand, we respect what you do so dont let troll comments keep you from teaching us all like a master, you are a master. Real time rules
do you think you can make a tutorial on how to draw metals and metal surfaces and from them being reflective and non-reflective if that makes sense? also can you do one on textured material that are specular and things that deal with sub-surface-scatterings?
You've seriously been such a tremendous boon for my own comic bought and illustration skills. I really couldn't thank you enough; you're a genius to be able to teach so effectively without ever even needing to interact with us - truly amazing!
Mr. Dunn, what should I have in my basic art kit? I have been drawing for a while now, maybe a year and a half with only a mechanical pencil and an eraser. I can only do so much with them. Maybe that's me not having the skill to do the things i think other tools can do, I don't know. My sketches are excellent compared to the ones I did when I started, and I've really improved, but I feel I can do more with other tools in my drawings but I'm not sure what I should have exactly. I was wondering if you could help me out and tell me what the average artist would have.
Awesome!! My daughter just bought me a set of Staedtler .03 Fineliners. It's time to open them up and get started. Thank you so much for making this video!
Awesome video mr. Dunn! I do have a small request, could you activate the Automatic captions? the cylinders and spheres have them but for some reason they´re not availabe in this video. Cheers!
Hey Alphonso, if you manage to get too much spare time on your hands, these videos really need an updated higher res version. I can barely discern the drawings in 360p on my monitor. On a side note, I have all your books and watch your videos all the time and love it all. Update: Oh ok so it was a camera focus issue. Halfway into the video it got much better.
I must say I enjoyed this immensely. There was wood, straw, marble, sponge, and sundry. It was hard to choose a favorite. However, there came number nine, the closer, and everything came tumbling down. It was indeed abstract, but unfortunately it didn't belong ; something of a "seventies" feel about it. However, you're certainly a deft hand, and you bring life very vividly into your textures. Thank you for sharing.
Uncle Will Terrell referred me to your channel and your videos are EPIC! Spent 5 hours on this and loved every minute of it! Never imagined learning about light, shadow and texture would be so easy lol
For anyone starting out drawing for the first time and willing to learn the craft,I would suggest reading Bert Dodson's Keys to drawing book. It's Bible for amateurs.
Dude...thank you...I'm a graphic designer and i can't draw for shit...I've been practicing drawing every day and you've given me great tips to reveal the hidden particulars of the craft. Keep up the great work!
blk stone I've been a graphic designer for more than 30 years and couldn't draw until just a few weeks ago. I started taking online classes and now I'm learning and drawing everyday.
Used to doodle a lot with ballpoint pens but never really considered going back to pen and ink since I've started with pencil. You're changing my mind, though, great vids. Subscribed.
You are so talented! I would like to thank you for your Tutorials. Among others you where the reason I started my own youtube Drawing channel Its not verry succesfull but thats oke, I fell in love with drawing and I’m gratefull for that alone!
thise are great tutorial .. i have some trouble sketching beach sand .. if you can make a special tutorial about different landscape surface is will be great. thanks!
have you done the video on rocks, i mean very detailed rocks , its a texture like a wall in a house in a way. i have not seen you do this detailed texture and on regular papper
how would you go about inking surrealistically? i do weird surrealistic illustrations and i was wondering how you would go about inking something a little more bizarre but keep it authentic with convincing detail? you're amazing btw I've watched this and your other videos countless times!
I really like your drawing style, Alphonso, and this video was especially helpful. Does your book talk about how to draw textures or could you perhaps recommend a book on how to improve in that area? Are there any books that had a big impact on your drawing, particularly in the area of texture drawing?
Hey, do you suggest going for precise realistic presentation of things or just dull but creative for a somewhat ameteur artist? I have been drawing outlines, shapes for a while, i kind of draw things well, but shading and details were never my thing, so i'm new to them. And i'm kind of uncertain what to do.. I kind of know that to do well one must repeatedly do the same thing, in order to get better at automatic execution, yet in the same time gain more opportunities on gaining new insights, new tricks one can apply to draw better, while in the long term the art itself also improves, as your execution etc experiences aswell. But i'm kind of not sure, whether i should focus on gaining more "tools" like patterns i can draw, or just go roam free, draw whatever i can with my current creativity. Would appriciate it, if you could give me some insight here! :f
+Legend_Warp Not sure I get you but I think I do...To address the first question, precise presentation is good, and "dull but creative" is also good in order to be as versatile as possible. However, where you focus most of your energy depends on what aspirations you have, if there are any. I think the earlier you have a sense of the direction you want to take the better, even if its not precise, because you can begin to gather the building blocks and start putting them together in the right place. In the beginning you should spread your wings and learn as much as you can as is relevant. If you think it may be a good idea to do it, just to do it. Especially if you think there is something to gain that you can see yourself benefiting from in the long run. I believe its better to have it and not use it than when a time comes to use it you dont have it
I like to draw surreal looking pieces in my spare time but they never really looked as "wow" as I feel they could due to my lack of detail in textures. thanks so much! :D apart from the fineliners you are using, do you recomend any other tools for inking? :)
Hi Alphonso! Thank you for your amazing videos they are so helpful and the way you explain everything is so clear. The only problem which I noticed in some other videos of yours also is that they are out of focus sometimes. Really appreciate your work.
Thank you for this amazing tutorial, Alphonso! I am not copying these textures just wanted to see the proper way to create volume and all. My teacher was no help at all.
You know what would be really cool and useful? If at the end you added annotations on each cube that lead to when you started drawing them, so we can re-watch some parts easily. But it's fine if it's too much trouble.

All the different textures and patterns seen in the world are so cool. It makes it a very interesting challenge to recreate them in drawing

Super helpful with the hay and the wood block
🙂
Thanks for sharing! Some of it a really good refresher and some of it newly learned. I’m slowly making my way through them all.
I would love to get some printouts of this kind of stuff so I can practice.

Thank you!
Your artwork is very inspiring, thank you for making this video and sharing your passion with us :)
Mr Dunn, your teachings got me 'A' for arts! Thank you!
Yayyyyy
Good textures! I will put your teachings to good use! thanks

+noleforlife@gmai thanks much! :-)
Alphonso, what is the texture on the right side of the wood block?
Thanks!
Good question...I just made it up lol
Use it however you see fit
haha, good!
You know what would be really cool and useful?
If at the end you added annotations on each cube that lead to when you started drawing them, so we can re-watch some parts easily.
But it's fine if it's too much trouble.
Really Messed Up People thats a good idea! thanks
Você será meu professor virtual. muito obrigado
Hello Alphonso, just one question there's this tuto in your book about textures ? thank you.
Ps : thank you for your videos.
Yes definitely
***** Cool :) i will buy it on Amazon :)
Love these cubs, great explanation and examples! I ordered your two books and they should arrive today; I'm so excited!!
Thank you
What is the texture that finishes 5.37? Maybe foam?
awesome and very helpful video, just this constant focus change ..
I'm in school or interior decor and It's my summer vacation so I'm trying to catch up on making nice textures. And personally I like the way u make the videos with the side guidelines and etc. Great job at providing the proper info thnx 👍
Megan Cavener no worries :-)
I still can't figure out if it's better to lay down the shading/value first and then the texture, or the other way around? I think you're doing it both ways here.
Depends on the texture. Experiment and see the results
Are you using normal drawing paper, or is it paper for tusch and markers
