Fun (not so fun) fact: Brad Bird was inspired to make the film after his sister was killed by her husband.
Brad Bird's pitch to the studio for the film? "What if a gun had a soul and didn't want to be a gun?"

And the reason why he decided to do this was because the original book "the iron man" was written by the author to help his son grieve over the loss of his mother. Brad bird wanted to make a respectful adaptation but using this movie to help him grieve over his sister

    Fun fact:
In the extended version of the film that came out in 2015, there are two new scenes they added. One is between the duck and cover scene and the bited tractor scene, which was Dean chating with Hogarth's mom at the diner.
The other scene is a very important one that explains more about the giant origin, is right after Hogarth explaning souls, Dean was sleeping with the tv on, than suddenly the Iron Giant's dream was projecting into the tv and suddenly turning into a nightmare with the deer dying, remembering when Hogarth save him at the power station and suddenly change to another vision. An alien city getting destroyed, hundreds of Iron Giants marching towards the destruction with him looking at the reflexion of the water in his battle mode. Than Dean wakes up watching the end of his dream with a planet blow up and than the Giant wakes up. That would explain why Dean act like that towards the giant when he accidentaly attack Hogarth.

Can't even describe the amount of chills I get everytime I see the Iron Giant's rage when he thinks Hogarth is dead. The ending doesn't need any words, we all shed a tear or two (maybe a bit more) during it. Amazing movie.
There's so many great animated movies Jen should really see! Any Disney movie from 90's and early 2000's is great, I've not watched too many of the new ones sadly. But of all the older ones, Atlantis has a very special place in my heart.

This movie also did a good job at hinting at McCarthyism and the Red Scare without going into deep details (McCarthy's never mentioned but the Communist paranoia is still there, but keeping it vague also makes the movie "timeless" in a good way)

This is what most Brad Bird fans consider a perfect movie. But it flopped originally, I was there day one as a little kid in an empty theater. It makes me cry every time 😢

My friend worked on this film. He took me to the Glendale studios and I got to see the entire storyboard mounted on a wall in a hallway. It had some darker scenes originally when the giant turns but they were changed a little.

I think the movie that Jen is referencing from Friends that Joey loves is not The Iron Giant, but a 1998 Billy Crystal movie called My Giant.

I always hate it when adults see a kids' movie that deals with heavy themes and say, "How is this a kids' movie?!?"
Those people have clearly forgotten what it was like to be a kid. I watched this movie when it came out, I was 9 years old. Had no problem processing the themes around death when I was that age.
I watched The Land Before Time by the time I was 4, and that film brought me to the unsettling realization that, someday, my parents would die and I would have to find my way in the world without them.
That was a hard truth to come to for a small child, but that seems to be around the age where most children start developing an understanding of finality.
I guess the point of all this is to say that as you grow older, you should not underestimate the things that children are capable of understanding.

I heard the creator wrote the script of the movie when he lost his sister to a murderer. He got the idea of a weapon with conscience, a weapon that DOESN'T want to kill. That is the iron giant. He was build as a weapon, sent to the earth to kill, but he doesn't want to kill.

It was also a book, written around the time the movie is set... although the books second half is very different from the movies (read it at school as a young kid). They could do a sequel that follows the book, given the movie ends with him in pieces and the book kinda starts with him breaking into pieces having stepped off a cliff near the ocean... although in the book he isn't an alien war machine, you never really find out what he is.
The book gets a little weird though lol... not sure how they'd adapt the 'bad guy' to be honest, unless they straight up just make it one to one.

Not here to be mean, but I just want to let you know that there is a difference between Animation and Cartoons. Cartoons are like Looney Tunes or Silly Symphonies where they’re all about visual exaggeration and making you laugh and being silly. Comedies if you will. Animated movies and shows are more focused on storytelling and character driven narratives. Shrek may have its funny moments, but it’s still aware of the fact that there’s a story they have to tell here. So it can be called an Animation-Comedy. Just a little something I’d thought I’d explain just in case your son asks about the kind of animated content you guys watch.
I still love the reaction though. And I’m glad your giving animation a chance on your channel. Especially Jen. Animation is not a genre or something aimed at one audience as Brad Bird says, it’s an art form that can do anything like a horror movie, a western, an R-rated film etc. Many movies that fit in this category that I think would be great films for you guys to watch are An American Tail (1986), The Land Before Time (1988), The Secret of NIMH (1982), Osmosis Jones (2001), Finding Nemo (2003), and even another animated MARVEL film, Hulk vs. (2009). These would all be great choices for you guys to check out as the fit in that criteria of animated films perfect for everyone in the family young and old, or even something more in the lines of older audiences.
Anyway. Just little suggestions I’d thought I’d throw out. I’m just so happy that there will be more and more animated content on this channel as an animation and art enthusiast myself. Especially with your new baby! I think Spider-Verse was a great kick-off to start out on! And I’m excited to see more and more of this art from as time goes on. Love you’re reaction, and I hope to see more soon!
P.S. the voice of the general is John Mahoney who played Martin Crane from Frasier! Also, the creator of Red Ryder got his first job at Disney as an animator and worked there throughout the 1920s

The Iron Giant was based off of the book by Ted Hugh's called The Iron Man. The Who's Pete Townshend acquired the rights to the story, and wrote a musical based off of the source material. They were going to make a stage musical of it, but when it didn't happen, the were going to make a stop-motion style movie of the original story. Warners Bros. then acquired the rights and decided to update the story with a new setting. Pete Townshend received executive producer credits on this movie. They did make a music video of Pete Townshend's "A Friend is a Friend " which shows what the movie could have looked like if it was stop-motion.

Person of Interest is a long commitment but I'm sure you guys would love it. It was created by one of the Nolan brothers. I believe the idea came up during The Dark kninght when Batman used the surveilance sytem and Lucious later destroyed it because of the moral implications. POI is basically Batman and Lucious using the surveilance sytem to save people. The show started before Snowden released the PRISM info, I believe that happened during S02 or 3 and is addressed in the show. It came ahead of it's time and predicted a lot of what happened since 2001. If not for the channel, I think you should watch it on your own time. I think, Jen will like it.

There's a director's cut that has an extra scene, hinting at the Giant's true purpose, it's dreams. The signal crosses with Dean's tv antenna and he wakes up to see the end of it. It's really dark.

Christopher Mcdonald voiced Kent Mansley in Iron Giant and played Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore and the only reason I noticed this was when he says "oh my GOD!" the way he does when the giant takes a bite out of his car and when Shooter McGavin sees Happy's ex boss.
