When can I walk normally after ACL surgery?

  • The rehab for ACL surgery takes many months and lots of hard work with a physical therapist. Most active people aim to return to sports or demanding exercise. When, though, can you return to simply walking without a limp? In this Ask Dr. Geier video, I answer that question for someone preparing to undergo ACL reconstruction.

    Suvankar asks:
I am thinking about having ACL surgery. I am not a sportsman. When could I get back to normal walking after surgery?
The postoperative restrictions a patient must follow differ between orthopedic surgeons. Some surgeons allow full weightbearing right away, while others keep the patient on crutches for weeks after surgery. Often other findings during surgery, such as a meniscus tear, influence the restrictions.
Once the surgeon allows weightbearing, the patient works to get off crutches and walk with a normal gait. Doing so requires getting full knee motion - getting the knee all the way straight and gaining enough bending of the knee - to walk without a limp.
In this video, I explain some of the factors that can cause a patient to limp as he tries to walk in the weeks after ACL reconstruction and how he can overcome it quickly and safely.

Today I’m in week 2 post surgery. I can walk but indeed it feels stiff and I have a little bit of pain. For anyone afraid for the surgery I’d recommend just push through the first four days after the surgery. Once passed that point it gets significantly better. I wish you all a great recovery, and a warm hug.

@M P walking no crutches now, bending is pretty good but straightening the leg is the hardest. If I try to stand or walk heel to toe like the doc says to, there's a good amount of aching pain in the right side of my kneecap which is where one incision spot is. The incision spots are definitely where you will have the most pain though, it was the same way for me.

i had acl surgery in 1992 on my left knee. Dr. Justin Lamont NYU did the procedure. He used my patella tendon to replace the ACL. My rehab was a motion machine used at home then I had a cast made to create a light weight brace. Crutches were used for 1 to 2 months. The best rehab was swimming and the hot whirlpool at Bally's Gym. I was playing full court basketball within 6 months with the brace on! Since then I never had a problem I am 51 years old thank God and Dr Lamont...

Hi, I am a Chemistry PhD student at the University of Kentucky. I tore my right leg ACL in a martial arts tournament about 8 years ago. That time I did not have the facility to take the surgery. However, after the injury, I took a good care of my knee. Although I could not continue martial arts, I kept working out stayed in good physical condition. Finally, I decided to take the surgery on 04/28/2017. My doctor said that she repaired my meniscus and the ACL with a patellar tendon autograft. After the surgery, they gave me a knee brace and a pair of crutches. The first day they put a drainer on my knee, and it was removed the following day by my physiotherapist. First 3-4 days were the worst days of my life. Pain and the swelling were severe. I took pain medicines only for 2 days, and after that, I stopped taking them because they made me dehydrated although I drank much water. So I tolerated my pain and continued the exercises recommended by the physiotherapist. My physiotherapist recommended a bunch of exercises to do hourly. In the beginning, I could not perform straight knee raises due to excruciating pain. However, I decided to bite the bullet and do it (At one point I felt that exercise is harder than doing a PhD :D). However, over the time I was able to do it, and the pain and the swelling reduced as I perform the exercises. So doing the exercises is crucial for a quick recovery. My doctor recommended that I can bend my knee about 45 degrees for the first two weeks and then I can advance the range of motion slowly. However, I was not supposed to put any weight for the first two weeks on the leg due to meniscus repair. After the second week, we worked on the range of motion up to about 90 degrees. Also, after the second week, my doctor suggested that I can put a little weight on the toes and walk with crutches. Now I am at third week after surgery. I feel much better now, and the swelling reduced by 90% now. Also, keeping the leg elevated and Icing it helps to reduce the swelling further. My doctor said I have to be on the crutches about 6 weeks after surgery. However, can't wait to start walking again. I wish everyone a flash recovery. Keep your faith up and never give up. Woohoo, Hoooooo…

Hi, Lil. This is my 2nd month after ACL. I can walk without a limp. Also, I have gained full knee range of motion. However, due to my meniscus repair, I am not allowed to run or jump for about 6 months (That is what my doctor said). I think after that I can get into martial arts. Also, during my PT sessions, I am practicing air kicks and punches (Not anything heavy). I hope you can you can get into MMA after your surgery. But please ask your doctor and physiotherapist when you can start doing it. Do not do anything to reinjure your knee during your recovery period. Wish you all the best. PT is your best friend. :).

I was told I would be able to walk without crutches one week after my surgery, however it's 11 days later and I'm still using my crutches! I'm still on pain medication as it's still painful however I'm very excited to be on the road for recovery. I had my left ACL repaired and Meniscus just over 4wks ago. Mine was patella graft (not hamstring) as the position of my legs means I use the hamstring more, so patella was better option. Pain straight after surgery was non-existent, but stopped taking medication after one week as I thought I'd ran out. After a 1 day delay, I had the worst pain I've ever experienced (for 4 days, until I got more painkillers). Don't be a hero and take your medication. It will slow down your recovery and ability to do your exercises. Only on paracetamol now and extension/flexion of the knee much better (still mild swelling). It's worth it, stick at it and do everything you need to do. Everyone will heal at different speeds, but it will heal if cared for properly post-op. I'm still at the early stages but keeping positive. Good luck all.

I just had my ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair in mid November. The first 4-5 days were terrible. I was in so much pain couldn’t sleep at all and I was constipated for almost 8days. After a week the wounds were completely healed outside and in two weeks later I was able to bear weight on my legs slowly. Fours weeks today I can walk around comfortably without no pain but I still have to be cautious. Just follow your Drs and PTs advice you will be back in no time. I am an athlete and a soldier and am hoping to be back in training after four months. It’s stressful especially if you are active and an outdoor person like me.

I only missed 2 days of classes and used my crutches less then a week! I was walking with a slight limp at my 2 week mark. Now, 3 weeks po and no pain and full extension/flexion! I helps it was a strait ACL tear no other ligaments, but i'm so happy with how everything went! every morning its still very stiff so i heat my hamstring, stretch really good and do my exercises, and it feels great!

My best advice is to not push it too hard, be consistent with therapy, and be patient with your progress. I am currently on day 4, post right cadaver graft ACL and Bucket Handle tear meniscus surgery. That being said, this is my second ruptured ACL surgery in 12 months. I am already not using the crutches and I am able to move around the house with the leg brace completely locked. Everyone is different, but this has been my experience both times (learn from me). Having the cadaver surgery is less invasive, but I also have a high tolerance for pain and tend to push the limit with weight bearing. I attribute the 30+ years of experience as a soccer player, at all levels, as being able to have a higher pain tolerance than others and the competitiveness to push rehab. I also only took the Naproxen and never touched the hydrocodone. That being said, that drive may have been (was) a detriment. I was cleared to resume sports at 7 months in June 2022, tore it a second time at the 10 month mark. Definitely rushed playing soccer again, but was cleared to do so. As this is my second surgery in a year, and approaching 40, I have reluctantly decided that my days of playing soccer are over, as I never want to have to go through this a third time. I am just one of those individuals who are wired to push the limits, for better or for worse. And, as stated with my opening line; My best advice is to not push it too hard, be consistent with therapy, and be patient with your progress.

I'm 16 and I had my ACL reconstruction (hamstring graft) 27 days (about 4 weeks ago). I've been doing physiotherapy 3 hours a day. After 23-24 days, I could walk without crutches (with knee braces though). I find it best to have just one crutch on the non-operative leg to be on the safer side and give under 10% weight on it so that your knee naturally builds up strength. I'm on the same journey as you guys ✌

I’m currently 10 days after ACL surgery. The first 4-5 days were tough. Mostly the pain and lack of mobility made it difficult. However now the knee feels way better. I’ve been performing the quad flex exercises since day one and they seem have increased blood flow and brought feeling back to the knee. I still can’t walk properly but I’m on my way to doing so. I can bend the knee about 35% as much as the good one. I’m very glad I had the surgery. Hope this helps.

I am 7 days following aclr and I am walking with a solid pace without a brace. Definitely favoring my surgical leg. I was fortunate to have had no meniscus damage. Also, I prepared my quad. A lot RICE. It's basically RICE and the recommend exercises. My biggest suggestion is limit pain medication to only sleeping the first 2 or 3 nights. And don't forget you are strong and the hard work will pay off.

I had acl reconstruction and meniscus scope exactly one week ago. I only used crutches to walk out of the hospital. The very next day I was putting my weight on it. 3rd day had an evaluation for therapy and bent my knee to just under 90 degrees. It is now day 7 and I am full weight bearing in a brace of course but I have it unlocked so I can walk without a stiff leg. I've been doing the homework therapy almost 3 times a day that they gave me at the evaluation visit and can get my knee way past 90 degrees. I will see the therapist tomorrow for the first session of PT and then next week have the stitches out. I've been changing my bandages every other day and putting tatu-derm ( basically tegaderm) over the bandages. This was a cadaver aligraph hamstring. I am 37 years old and had the other acl in my left knee reconstructed using my patella ligament when I was 19. It was the worst recovery ever and took forever for me to walk or weight bear. I tore my other acl that same year and am just now getting it all fixed up. Thanks for reading my experience.

Hi, Im a sporty woman of 52 I tore my ACL in my left leg Dec 31st in the afternoon on a ski holiday, - a really stupid fall was all it took. Thank goodness it was to the end of our holiday! We were assisted and flew home a couple of days later with my leg well supported in a stiff strap. I had to wait a month and had my surgery 20th January 2018. The first week was hell. Towards the end of the week I was able to cope with the pain. But right after surgery I was up, and helping myself to the bathroom ect. I saw my physio the same day in the clinic, and was able to do straight leg raises. 2 weeks in - I got rid of the crutches, I also never had a knee brace. What a pain they were! The best help I found was a skate board, I sit on a height of the first step of a ladder and put my foot on and roll back and forward... this has helped a lot. I am at week .. 3 days from 1 month, and I walk, not perfectly but I concentrate to place my weight and foot down correctly.. Im on my bike doing almost a full rotation, and I have now a bit over 90 degrees movement in my knee. I see my physio twice a week, and he has been very helpful. Oh, and squats..... loads of those!! :)

My experience so far: Had ACL reconstruction 2 weeks ago, used patella autograft, right knee. I was given both a knee brace and crutches at the hospital (out patient). After 1 week I could put some weight on it and in 10 days i could limp without the crutches. The fact that I also had pneumonia the week following surgery I think contributed to slowing down my progress. Now I have 66 degrees and can walk with the brace but still with a limp. Still cannot drive. Swelling has gone down but still not gone. Strangely enough, i haven't had much pain in my knee (was off pain meds on day 3), but my shin is very painful every time I get up. I researched this and this is normal for a patella graft. Started physical therapy 4 days ago (2X per week) and am doing all the exercises religiously. Hope the progress picks up.

@@TopBoi93 Hi, unfortunately I tore my ACL again in December, 2020. Two mistakes that I realized: 1st I rushed my surgeon to do an allograft. Allograft is great if you are going back for light exercises but definitely not competitive like soccer. 2nd I did not give the physical thereby the right effort and time. I rushed to go back and play soccer and that was another mistake. I did my 2nd ACL surgery in January, 2021 with a patella tendon this time and the surgeon suggested to add an "ALL" allograft for more stability for the knee. Luckily I was able to straighten the knee fully and my recovery is doing great and I can tell that it is even more stable than the first surgery. The best advice I can tell is 1st if you are young (35 and below) and you want to do competitive sports like soccer or basketball or any sport that has cutting, I recommend to use either hamstring or patella tendon(each doctor is different, but both have great results). 2nd advise is to spend at least 10 "continues" months of quality physical therapy with a pro trainer. When I say "continues" it means you cannot take long breaks other than rest days that the physical thereby suggests. your knee is gonna heal by it self, but the muscles are not gonna grow by them selves, you gotta do the work. I would say 3 legs days a week will be great in your advanced recovery level.
      GOOD LUCK!

I recovered pretty well from my first operation and was able to return on the field fully confident without a brace. I was able to keep up with my team. Unfortunately, i tore the other one, so i'm back at it again. I decided that i would quit soccer cause i dont want to get injured that badly anymore. Anyways, i can already bend my knee 90° like wut. Hi! Today is my 20th day post op for medial and lateral meniscus repair and ACL reconstruction (left knee). Also, I had bilateral congenital absence of the ACL so pretty excited that I have an ACL now. I can walk with a brace and 1 crutch but it's still hard so I still choose to walk with both crutches for the most part. My doctor advised to keep wearing the brace for 5 more weeks because my meniscus was pretty bad. I am glad they were able to repair it. I am taking it easy and still using the aircast at least 2-3 times a day. Doing PT exercises at home and waiting for PT in clinic to start. Taking it slowly but surely. Planning on having my right knee done when my left knee has fully recovered.

Just had my ACL surgery today (04/03/2019) I was very nervous. It wasn't so bad i am in pain, but that was expected. The pain I have feels like when I tore it. I got sent home with a polar care cube that hooks up to a pad around my knee that circulates ice water making the pain a little more tolerable. If you are having this done all I can say is you will have to deal with some pain the first day,but I'm sure it will be well worth it. Good luck y'all and GOD BLESS.

I'm 44.I had a ACL reconstruction 2 weeks ago, using the hamstring graft. No other repair. Meniscus was good. I was able to put weight right after the surgery. The second day, I stop using crutches in the house and I remove the brace (a zimmer) a week after. I can now walk without any limp. I still have a bit of swelling, but the recovery was quick enough to keep my quad strong. I had my full extension day 1 and My flexion is at 130. So here are few things that worked well for me: I did a very focus pre-op program targeting my proprioception, my quad and hamstring. I started the full extension right few hours after my surgery ( very painful). I have started passive flexion and hip work the day after. I iced my knee every other hours. I slept well and I eat very well, all organic, proteins (no red meat), greens, fruits and nuts with vitamins A, C, E. I made sure to have all meals on time + a lot of healthy snacks. I took supplement of fish oil, silice, zinc and copper. I'm doing stationary bike without resistance and it's great to smooth everything. So, if you take an good approach, your recovery will be great. I hope this helps! JF

Recently underwent ACL reconstruction (via patellar tendon graft) and was weight bearing immediately with two crutches and compression band. After about 4 days, no longer needed crutches and walked short distances with minor limp. I was sceptical of having close to normal mobility early on and checked in with physiotherapist. Was told that this is fine and the crutches are merely for comfort. Walking max 5 minutes with no crutches a week on from surgery. Recovery seems to be quite deferential to each person. This is my second knee surgery in a year (meniscus repair) alongside an MCL and PCL tear, and I was dedicated to physio both rehab and pre-hab - factors which seem to effect recovery. Hope this helps - Ireland.

A recent injury to the meniscus gave me reason to do both procedures. I aspirated badly when extubated due to an ulcer in my stomach, and developed pneumonia that kept me in the hospital for 2 nights. Even with the setback, I was walking on crutches on post-op day 2. On post-op day 5, I limped around the house without crutches, but with difficulty/pain. Today, I only use the crutches in the morning for about 30 minutes due to pain and stiffness in the knee until the stiffness works out. My experience so far. I had my surgery done on 12th May and it is 10 days now. I was given a walker and a brace the very next day of my Surgery. On 14th, I was asked to bend my knee. The pain was excruciating at first 10-20 tries but once I got to 20, bending the knee became easier(I did a 100 by the end of the day). 3rd day onwards I was undergoing the physiotherapy and was advised to use walker and brace for two weeks from the date of surgery, although, from the 7th day of the surgery onwards I am able to walk without the Walker and just the brace. The physiotherapy and icing really helped me in getting back my leg to a better shape. Today I can walk slowly without any brace(tried it thrice without any support) but would prefer the surgeon to give me a green signal by the time I go to remove the stitches which will be 4 days from today. I personally feel it is all in the mind once we are able to take control of our quadriceps muscles. To people out there worrying if there will be pain for a long time, I had nearly no pain after the third day, just a tight tension when I try to bend my knee which fades away with physiotherapy exercises done regularly and icing in the swelled up areas. The type of surgery done was Hamstring Tendon Auto graft and the surgery was for a torn ACL with MPFL damage and lateral meniscus tear.

Dr. David Geier, Sure thing. By today is 1 month since my surgery (5th week). I am able to do full squats, climb up two steps at a time with ease and there is nearly no swelling. Dr.David, one question, if you could help me in understanding. I have a very slight swelling in my knee and when I straighten my knee and bend it, suddenly I feel a locking and I have to press my feet against the floor or press my thigh area to see the swelling flow to the right side of my knee so that I can bend it. My physiotherapist said those should be air bubbles but if it doesn't dissolve over time, I need to consult the surgeon. What exactly is this issue? This locking happens once to thrice a day and I will not be able to move my knee down until I move that fluid.

I'm 22 days post ACLR surgery. The first week was terrible, excruciating pain running down my shin below the bottom incision from what my DR said was blood leaking down my shin out of the hole that was drilled. I was walking with 2 crutches for about 10 days, now only 1 basically for balance. I'm still in full extension with my brace for normal activities, but am progressing nicely at PT. I had a hamstring graft acl surgery and most of my meniscus removed because it was completely destroyed . I managed to take my first steps with crutches a day after surgery and without crutches at the 11th day post op. I was at a very good physical level before I tore my acl (I tore it in the middle of a 5 week camp in June for my first pro kickboxing fight) which was very helpful for my recovery. Tomorrow I will be officially 6 months post op and I will have my pro debut late February - early March

I am 3 weeks post op, ACL reconstruction with patellar tendon graft from opposite knee and meniscus repair as well. I have about 110 degrees flexion and have achieved full extension. I am walking with one crutch and focusing on heel to toe gait. I was allowed full weight bearing about a few hours after surgery. Wasn’t allowed to walk unless it was to the bathroom for the first week. And was slowly allowed to resume daily activities by second week. Thank you everyone for sharing your stories. I dislocated my left knee and tore my ACL and meniscus during a taekwondo class. I'm moderately active and am a teacher so I have chosen surgery with the hopes of maintaining my active lifestyle. I will have surgery in 2 weeks. I'm currently using crutches and can distribute my weight on both legs. I still have a lot of swelling and minimal movement but start seeing a PT tomorrow. what I'm struggling with the most is frustration. I'm typically a positive, happy and outgoing person but have not felt that way in several days. It's difficult to move as slow as a sloth and have to rely of my spouse and son for so many things. however, they have both been amazing throughout this entire process, so I want to stay as positive as possible for them and myself. has anyone else struggled with anger and frustration during your injury, and what has helped you? I am 3 weeks post op today. I had ACL reconstruction (petellar tendon graft) and he said he "cleaned up" a lateral meniscus tear in my left knee. So far, this has been a lot worse than I expected it to be, but things are slowly getting better. I did search for this video to find out when I would be able to walk normal again (and see other's experiences). The first few days were the worst. I'd say the first two weeks are the worst. It helps to have someone taking care of you for the first 2 weeks if you can get the help. 17 days post op, I was able to walk around (the house) without walker/crutches, but I am still needing 1 crutch for support to walk. My knee can give out at any time. I am by no means walking normal, but it is getting better very slowly. My PT didn't start until 2 weeks after the surgery, which I felt was forever. So far, only 2 sessions down, but it has helped big time. I was sent home with NO brace and was told to do the CPM machine for 6 hours a day starting at 40 degrees and up to 90 degrees by my day 10 post op appointment. Anyways, so far this has not be fun and I CANNOT wait to be able to walk normal again and do cardio (never thought I'd say that). I am hoping to see the light at the end of the tunnel. This has been HELL, but the end result is hopefully going to be worth it (which is to play ice hockey goalie again) in 7-8 months. Wishing a speedy recovery for you all!

I hope this helps someone. My 16 year old daughter had surgery for acl chronic tear (old complete tear) and a meniscus bucket handle tear (Thank God they could sew the meniscus back together). She was in pain (she says a 7 out of 10) for three days. She was told to bend her knee 90 degrees but no weight bearing. They say 6 weeks in brace. The pain was so bad that she did not try to bend it and she had no strength in her leg. Today (fourth day) I called the hospital and was told to let her leg hang off the bed at 90 degrees. She did it and it was perfect. She was weak and could only move it a little but I am happy she has the range of motion she is supposed to have right now. We start physical therapy in three days. She has a hamstring graft and I know she will have to work to strengthen that. God bless everyone

I had an ACL reconstruction with the patellar tendon graft, as well as a lateral tenodesis. I was told I could bare weight straight away as I had no meniscus damage, I also did not have a brace. After about week 2 I came off the crutches, now I am at week 4 post op. The last 2 weeks I get a locking sensation in my patellar tendon, where it stays tensed and does not allow me to go from straight to bent past about 45 degrees unless I concentrate to relax my leg. My physio suggested going back onto the crutches to help alleviate, so for now still not walking normal...

It depends on the person and the injury, and specialist can give time frames and dependents but it’s more of a checklist and pain tolerance ordeal. I’m 20 days out of my second ACL and meniscus repair and also had a Patellar tendon repair and I’m still on crutches and yesterday was told I could work with my Physio to get to a 90 degree flexion bend. And can try and walk with my crutches. However last time I had a hamstring repair and wasn’t able to straighten my leg properly. I had extremely strong muscles around my leg the first time and only needed the surgery to help with sport. But I find this one to be easier for some reason even though I hadn’t trained or worked out. It’s because this time my meniscus damage isn’t as bad that I’m able to do things a bit better than last time. I’m on day 2 of my new bending and only have a 30degree bend, but my specialist and surgeon told me that if I can build my muscle and gain more flexion I can loose the crutches. But that’s all on my own body repairing itself and building. tomorrow if I wake up and the pain isn’t there and I have somehow built muscle I might be able to be without crutches and focus on the bending and movement. So I think the best person to tell you would be your own body and your specialist/surgeon and Physio. If they see that you’re ready or that your body is healing well the next stage will follow! Keep up the great work!

I had ACL surgery 5 days ago. I fell down a stair at a guesthouse and landed incorrectly on my left knee. I am experiencing a lot of pain in my left arm, I've doctored it with an ice pack and deep heat (a cooling gell for muscles), could this be from the strain of my arms having to pick up the slack? I'm also now terribly afraid of stairs now, I have basically always fallen down stairs. I was apparently born with my leg facing inwards, over the years we managed to get it straight but I have never been able to but my knees together (as in tightly together when standing in attention mode) would this be a contributing factor to why I am always falling??
Greetings all the way from South Africa

Today on day 27th day I can bend my knee to an angle near 40 degrees. I am regaining my calf muscles. Although my quads are very weak, I am working on it. I can walk on plane floor pretty easily but in case of stairs its difficult to descend. I hope you all will recover soon and obviously me too.

Will smith thank you so much for asking 😊, it’s been 2 months and I am walking 90% normally. As per my doctor I am recovering fast and al the exercises he recommended, I am doing it all. As of now doing the stretching excerpts without weight...and it helped me a lot. And I am able to do my normal floor exercises normally coz of that. Feeling good and by February I m sure I will be running and playing soccer as previously but I gave me 8th May 2018 as the date to play soccer again as that is my birthday and I will complete 9 months after my surgery. Thank you once again 😊 means a lot to me.

Hey doc real concerning question here. I had acl surgery 4 months ago. I was told by my therapist that I am able to shoot around. Today while I was practicing I did a move and felt something in my knee, but there was no pain it just felt like my knee “slip” or moved a bit. It wasn’t a twisting motion that I felt, but for a slip. Did I just messed something up in my knee?

I'm a 50-year-old woman who had ACL surgery allograft 3 weeks ago. I'm now able to walk now with a very small limp, but I don't go fast. I keep up with the PT exercises twice a day, and I go to PT once a week. I can straighten my leg, but I can only bend it as far as squatting onto a chair. I have strong legs from being a mountain biker, so I'm sure that helps. I'm feeling optimistic.

I had undergone acl reconstruction and meniscus repair surgery on 12/19/2018. After my operation I had a lot of pain and swelling. My physiotherapist told to put 10 percent of my body weight after 3 days of surgery. Now my pain is reduced to some extent but not my swelling. Doctor told that it may take 4 weeks for the pain to reduce completely.

I had my ACL (patellar tendon autograft) on Jul 1 at 1pm and I was already up and "walking" by 8pm. Yes, it was an extremely slow pace and I was only just sliding the foot across the floor maybe 1-2 feet at a time. But I was specifically told by my doctor to try to get up and move as soon as I can. It was very short distance as well - really just from the bed to the bathroom (so 10-20 feet). I constantly exercised while lying in bed. I never had crutches or a brace. I could do stairs (1 at a time) up and down on the 3rd day (when I was released from the hospital). I had full flexion by the end of the 2nd week. Now, 23 days after the surgery I bike 30 mins a day plus do about 1-2 hours of regular post-op/rehab exercises. I'm really close to full extension (should have that by the end of week 4).

hi, had an accident about one month back, i m having these issues as per the MRI report
    1. Likely suggestive of osteochondral injury
    2. Full thickness mid-substance tear of ACL
    3. Full thickness radial tear of posterior horn of lateral meniscus
    4. Grade 1 signal / contusion in the body and posterior horn
    5. Moderate synovial effusion in knee joint
    6. Baker's Cyst
sir, what is your opinion on this ?
i have not gone any surgery yet ! have consulted 2 senior orthopedic doctors in Mumbai,
    one suggest surgery
other suggest surgery can be delayed as i m not an athlete type person

I tore my mensicus and ruptured my acl from the femoral attachment in my right knee playing 5aside football on 3g surface by twisting my knee. It happened 6months ago and had acl reconstruction and mensicus repair surgery surgery 2 weeks ago due to incorrect diagnosis until i got an mri scan which was hard to get. The surgeon used my hamstring rather than patella. I was told to weight bare straight away but using crutches. I was given exercises to do by the physio. Currently i am struggling to fully straighten my leg and bend it fully. My quadricep has almost fully dissappeared and it was muscular and ripped before. My hamstring and calf still have shape and can tense up. Before surgery i think the Aneastethics doctors put a nerve block in but i am no 100% sure but they asked me if i was okay with it. I said yes as long as my surgeon said it's fine or better to do. I still have some numbness on the outside of my shin

Acl and Meniscus repair at Houghston Clinic, weight bearing post op day 2 with brace. Pain level high after nerve block wore off but still did pt at home. Walking with brace, full weight, almost full range of motion after 7 days of home pt. No pain meds after day one, pain level still managed with Advil. Still wearing brace 24/7 only remove for home pt. Sleeping is terrible. Day 8 post op.

Hi, it’s been almost a month since I got my right knee ACL surgery. My mom has planed a trip for a year already for next week (5th week post op), we are planing no to walk more than 5km p/day. Would you recommend us to cancel the trip or it’s to walk for long time. I am able to walk to the supermarket which is 1km away without pain but my knee gets a bit swallowed. Thanks

@Dr David please advice. I used to play football. I have had zero pain from day 1 of injury. I had swelling only on 2nd day. Mri 1 showed partial tear. 1 month later of no movement and no weight on injuried leg. Mri 2 shows compete tear. Dr. Was saying it's minor acl. He was shocked too. As physical examination I was normal to him. Since I did not use my right injuried leg 1 month it had become stiff and I was limping. Now on physiotherapy 5 day 2 sessions I am almost walking without limp. No surgery yet. What is your advice. My issue is. If I am not able to play soccer like before then what Is the point of surgery. I need to play some sports. But after surgery if you can't play most sports like soccer badminton tennis cricket. And you are only left with swimming and running. Is it even effective to have surgery. What do you advice.
I am 42. I played soccer for 2.5 years. I was my only form of happiness and also majorly to be away from cholesterol related issue.
I am very fit. Sometimes people are shocked if I tell them 42. They think I am 27 or 28 max. Some have even said 24.
So I am fit. I want to remain fit. This legless. Life is making me go into utter depression. And I don't know what to do. I don't Even have the funds to get myself operated for surgery. I am also thinking if stem cell procedure is a chance. Let me know thanks.

7 days post op Right ACL (quad tendon graft) and meniscus “clean up.”
I’m in a brace and ambulatory since 4th day post op no crutches with limp. The 5th day was my 1st PT appointment and I did great but after PT I then went shopping like an idiot. Bad mistake. Set me back due to increase in swelling and pain. Learning to take it slower now, to achieve a healthy and “full”recovery.
I highly recommend having a nerve block for post op pain 👍🏼
