MADE IN BRITAIN - EPISODE 1
    Tom's website - www.tafinefurniture.co.uk/
    Tom's Insta - tomaddisonf...
My brand new series, which is the counter part to my Death of the High Street series. I am going to be going on a journey all over Britain looking at products that are still made here, in the fight against cheap imported goods.
We all know that online shopping is one of the main killers of our towns and cities and I feel the only thing I can really do whilst highlighting those problems, is to showcase and celebrate the industry and crasftspeople we still have left.
This first episode was with a fine furniture maker from Wensleydale. It was amazing to see how he has carved a career whilst up against the giants of mass production. I also loved that all the tools he was using were made in Britain, some being over 100 years old.
If you make something in Britain, get in touch with me and lets make a video together. My email is wanderingturnip2022@gmail.com. Or if you know of someone or an industry that does stille exist, send it my way.
    Until next time,
    W.T

I remember growing up and my Dad always had such great tools (which were his father's tools from Sheffield like hand drills, spanners, planes, wrenches etc) - even his toolbox was steel and had that strong gun-oil smell. It blew my mind that they seemed so indestructible. Then I grew up and experienced Chinese screwdrivers that can't even get through their first use without some kind of damage 🤣. He has used those same tools for 60 plus years and they are still going strong.

They're a false economy. All these capitalists were happy to outsource for cheap labour, make Brits unemployed then buy plastic junk after the 12 hour shift in Tesco. No more!

How true is that concerning tools. I bought a set of Stanley drivers, used one crosshead once, got rounded off. I’ve got Sheffield cutlery and stoke mugs and plates etc. No cheap second rate crap for me.

Good craftsmen buy good-quality tools. Good-quality tools are still being made but they are expensive. Young people aren't taking up skilled trades the way they used to, so high-quality tools will soon be gone.

“In every single job you’re striving to do better than you did last time.”
That’s all you need to know about the quality of the workmanship you’re going to get.
My dad would hammer that into me when teaching me to restore antique clocks and music boxes. His workmanship was perfection.
What a great start for a new series. It’s great to see a craftsman who is passionate about his work.

Tis True. A mans precious Workshop is a Kingdom to some.
Everybody should have a workshop or space to create.
Like a drummer, what use is a drummer when he cannot play his drums any more use than a carpenter with no where to work or keep tools and wood.
Elementary. Maybe the owners of these long term leasehold buildings with high rents are er....don't like "people". Or shops of the traditional type.
Maybe they are the same people who would turn the Congress Building into a "pie shop". Or Pizza Express.
One has to remember that the owners of these facades and "leaseholds" have one priority. To make money first. You would think that would be the "priority" of the Federal Reserve.
But it isn't. The priority of the Federal Reserve is to make sure YOU ARE EMPLOYED.
So much for "banks"...called something else when you understand the "State of Play".
Leaseholders and Landlords Priority = Mr Money Bags = Mr Potter in Its a Wonderful Life". He doesn't want all you "Useless George Baileys" trying to fight for what is right.
Britain and its Heritage = Free Market Capitalism = Small Government and the removal of greedy (slum) landlords who stop PROGRESS.
And restoring to the Public the Public FREE HOUSES. Beer all over the floor and all...
With cigarette machines and ashtrays....plus spit and sawdust decor and a "public bar next door which is cheaper".

We have to buy these products. Are we willing to do that? Do we care enough??? The answer is made in Britain. I live in Finland. Over here, Finns will happily pay a price premium to buy a product that has been made in Finland. I'm not sure that it would work in England though, because I sense that Brits are more selfish and short-termist, so they'll go for an import if it's only marginally cheaper than a British product. The upshot is that we only have ourselves to blame. th-cam.com/video/avEOpqABDko/w-d-xo.html

Thoroughly enjoyable & inspirational twenty minutes of two very likable guys collectively showcasing their creative passions. Increasingly important content in a time of utter dross with a refreshing & reassuring glimpse into the workshop of a real craftsman rightfully proud of his accomplishments & lot in life. Made me a bit nostalgic for old stomping grounds & brought back fond memories of woodworking classes where I kind of now regret dosing about too much.

Did my degree, then moved to forest of Dean, started labouring as a job to keep the money in, eneded up collected as much scrap wood as possible. 3 years in ive been making picture frames and planters from it all. made sooooo many and sold so many. my attitude is the same. local as much as possible n not throwing any small scraps out at all. i now live in scotland Aberdeenshire and have a garage now so im full on!!

As a Dutchman, I only own one thing that is actually fully made in Britain.
An SME tonearm that I've put on my turntable, which is a piece of craftsmanship made all in house in their factory in Steyning.
Even the bolts and nuts are made in their own factory.
Everything metal starts in their factory with plain bars of metal that are molten, metal parts rejected by their QC gets molten along with it.
8:40 for someone who's heavily into turntables like myself, it's really nice to see that predecessor... didn't expect that one in this video!

How beautiful is his work. Just lovely. Its the love, care and craft what's missing. True craftmanship. Even the tools he's using. 👍💗
Everything is now just cheaply made and throw away tat.

I don't know if you also have this saying, but it immediately came to mind: craftsmanship has golden soil! My great-grandfather was also a cabinetmaker and, as everyone knows, so was my son.

Great craftmanship. If he ever wants ideas on things to make, he should make beautiful doll furniture - there's a definite market for 1:6 scale furniture. I collect it myself. Some of the best makers sell it on Etsy but there always seems to be a demand and there are waiting lists for certain items. If I had the skills I would make it myself.

Thanks for showing this guy and his workshop with quality tools, he reminds me of my old neighbour when I was a kid in the 1960's.
He used to make the old pedal go-karts for all us kids then.
Have also seen some great craftsmen over in the US who stopping by at Amish farms in Iowa.
Also I still have some quality automotive tools from the 1970's and before, never see them break after all those years of use

The BBC is a shambles of a station and should be dismantled. I don't think dave here can save it by himself.

Nothing can compare to a real quality piece that someone has put their heart and soul into. These pieces are to be treasured, as well as the people who create them. Thanks for a great video.

This is awesome, can’t wait to see more episodes. I worked in retail for two decades and have always called for artisans and apprenticeships in those crafts. You might have watched this already but there’s a video on here called Stewart Lee on The Art of Repair, with Hackney Artisans in East London. There’s was also a series similar to yours by the The Hairy Bikers called Go North in 2021 and it was all about people from all over the world in the North of England and artisan crafts, food and agricultural innovations.
