- It’s certainly easier to make assumptions about people than it is to spend time getting to know someone. We wanted to put assumptions to the test to see what we're missing out on because we're so busy assuming we already "know" a person. Join us as we discover why you should never judge a book by it’s cover in our series, Reverse Assumptions.
We are all conditioned with certain biases. In this experiment, we challenged these biases by asking people to make assumptions about their partner's appearance without ever actually seeing their partner. When they flipped around to finally face each other, they were shocked by how wrong they were.

People assume I'm a masculine guy, even though I don't really have any typical masculine interests and I like cute animals, musicals, clothes, and wearing make up.

People think I'm around 12-14 years old most of the time and thats why I get asked for my ID a lot. I'm actually 20 lmao. Another thing is that almost everyone asked me if I'm Polish or Russian because I seemingly look like that but I'm 100% German. Thats why I think this series is so interesting. I would like to do something like that too, just for the experience!

People assume I'm younger, because I talk in a friendlier voice, which makes me sound younger. Then, even if they see me, they think I'm younger, because my family ages well; we all look younger. What's annoying is when they think I'm younger and assume I'm less mature too.
After reading comments I remembered that people think I'm gay, because I'm friendly, have a lot of female friends (a lot of friends in general), and also have a best friend who is female.

The guy being awkward in the end about handshaking or hugging made me think about the fact that people don't really know how to approach things with a person with a disability. I have been visually impaired...aka legally blind...since birth. I always wondered why people seemed kind of awkward around me...then one of my co-workers was in a wheelchair and I started to understand the whole thing. I didn't know what to do with her...that sounds weird, but now I was the one in an awkward situation. My job, and hers, was to help people with disabilities get jobs, so I got a lot of insight from my friendship with her...and vice versa. I finally just said to her..."I have never had a friend in a wheelchair, so tell me when you need help, because I don't want to make you feel that I am constantly aware of your situation. I am more than happy to help you if you need help, but I won't usurp your independence." I told her to do the same with me and that I would let her know if I needed assistance because of my limited vision. I used to see people on street corners with white canes and a red tip...others would just walk past them without asking if they needed help. I think they felt uncomfortable and didn't know what to do...or if they should do anything. You really don't need to do anything in that situation, but you might say "hello" to let them know you are there...then if they need assistance, they may ask you. Most blind people travelling alone on the streets know exactly where they are, but suppose the bus driver let them off at the wrong stop...or some other odd thing happened? Most people are very kind and want to be helpful, but are just unsure how to go about it in these situations.
Some people assume I am a hetrosexual ; I am not. Also, they assume I don't speak English, but I have been speaking it for 4 or more years now.

I'm Asian as well, but most people in the States wouldn't consider me such since I'm from Turkey and don't stereotypically look 'Asian'. However that does not change the fact that I'm Asian and I have the right to call myself such. That's what I was wondering about, is she from let's say China, Oman, India or Armenia? All of those countries are technically Asian but they most certainly don't share the same culture, hence why Asian is a very vague classification imo and quite problematic

Don't be awkwardly nice to people with disabilities. They get that 10 times a day. Treat them normally and let them feel normal.

I wanna do this because people get so much wrong about me lol like my sexuality, my I guess ancestry cause no one like ever guesses that I have Mexican lineage like my grandmothers family is from Mexico. I feel like I sound how I look though, like my voice just screams brunette lmao, but I feel people would get my height wrong cause I’m like a quarter shy of 5’11 which is tall for a girl especially in my family where most of all the women are around 5’3.
Usually, people think I am between 17 and 23 (I am 33 years old), they think I'm a wild partygirl (my wildest party is to go to bed at 11 pm after a pizza and a herbal tea...). And everybody thinks I am a heterosexual who likes guys with a lot of tattoos, long hair and smelly grungy clothes... well, ask my ultra neat and «girl next door» wife if thats true....

FIrst off....Mariam is beautiful. Those strong cheek bones and her incredible smile.....wow. And her eyes.....forgetaboutit! Secondly, O'Shay should never feel that being sensitive is a bad thing. There are far too many people in this world who feel nothing.....for a person, especially a man, to actually feel emotions and to feel for others....that is a great thing. I am a sensitive person, a man, who has been told that my heart is my weak point because it makes it so easy for people to take advantage of me.

Anna Lucia She could be German-American. I was born and raised (and now living) in Switzerland, but in the U.S. I would say I was from N.C. (where I lived for most of my life), but was originally from Switzerland. Overall, I present myself as Swiss-American, so I didn’t find her comment odd.
@@Evieteresa I understand what you're saying and there was certainly some assumption in my comment. Of course there are American citizens who have experienced socialization from outside of the U.S. and still have family ties in other countries. Perhaps the woman in this video is one such person. The people I was referring to though are those numerous Americans who base everything on genetics and confuse cultural & national identity with race & ethnicity, often for the sole purpose of having something more to say than "I'm white American. Full stop." I don't agree with this type of mentality at all because identity is a lot more complex than DNA.
