What Assumptions Do You Make About Single Parents? | Reverse Assumptions

  • It’s certainly easier to make assumptions about people than it is to spend time getting to know someone. We wanted to put assumptions to the test to see what we're missing out on because we're so busy assuming we already "know" a person. Join us as we discover why you should never judge a book by it’s cover in our series, Reverse Assumptions.
We are all conditioned with certain biases. In this experiment, we challenged these biases by asking people to make assumptions about their partner's appearance without ever actually seeing their partner. When they flipped around to finally face each other, they were shocked by how wrong they were.
Now it's YOUR turn. What do people assume about you?

Kids aren't as resillient as adults think they are. don't you remember things from your childhood that shaped your thought processes for life? I accidentally got a penny stuck in my throat when I was 3...it was traumatic for me and my mom. she had no phone or car in those days and she had to run next door to try to use their phone....I don't know who she was calling. I remember she tried to shake it out of me by turning me upside down. I threw up as she left the room and it came out. I still chew everything to a pulp and I can't take pills at all. My Son just told me he doesn't remember anything good from his childhood...he's 38. I thought things went pretty well until his early teens when my husband (ex husband) started having mental issues. We divorced whenmy son was 18. There was some physical abuse by my ex, but not severe. Anyway I think kids don't act like they are troubled, but you find out later in life. If you ever watch My-600-Pound Life on TLC you will note that so many of these kids became obese because they were abused and food brought them comfort.

Gamp Lane I think you're right but I also believe that it does depend on the kid and the parents. I had some traumatic things in my childhood but I also have two very very extremely loving parents and a disabled brother who is loved very much bye many people.
I think that it is a lot of nature and nurture that depends on how well a person handles things when they get older. It's such an interesting subject with so many variables in each child that it's almost impossible to guess an outcome.

i find it so cool that, that guy left hsi family when he was 14/15. I’m turning 15 and I wouldn’t survive a day, it’s so cool to think whatever he has he got on his own just image what you’d have as an adult if you didn’t have you’re family to take you there. ik it happens often but Just sayin’ .

I got my first tat at 38. When I decided the only opinion that mattered was mine. I was raised in a war zone created by angry abusive adults, from, bio to step to foster. And was really just locked away in my room at 14 til 18. The. it was all up to me to figure out. So to see these people doing so well is inspiring. I wish I had been as resourceful. They were all nice, kind, caring people. Stereotyping is something everyone does whether we admit it or not. I see a lot of young poc wearing Jordan's, doesn't mean he's saying they are criminals. None of the people I know are anyway.

I've never really known my father. He was arrested the day after my third birthday and I never saw him again after that. I don't even know what he looks like. Not very long after, a few months, my mom married my stepdad who doesn't care about us at all and takes all of my mom's hard earned money.
Because of this kind of lifestyle atleast half my family has some sort of mental disorder. I have severe anxiety and depression and use a service dog at 14 years old. One of my brothers is ADHD, my older sister is bipolar, and my oldest brother has had every diagnosis under the sun.
And someone actually had the nerve to go to my face and say that I would have been better off in a abusive household where could have been killed, and in this household where my mother is the only one with common sense instead of my mom just staying single.
I can't believe it. People would actually rather watch a child suffer every day of their life than just have a single loving parent raise them.

Hi, I understand exactly where you are coming from. My father was locked up on Riker's Island (the worst prison in America) for three years, starting from before I was even born, until able to be put on trial. I was not able to meet him until after those three years were over and he continued to leave me behind for the fast life. It hurts me till this day and I'm 19. Not able to move on and learn what security means because I never felt it from a man before. But, we cannot put what we cannot control in front of us. The love you are able to give to yourself through self-care and respect is just as comforting as any hug a father can give. Much respect to you, my love.

When I lived in Melbourne in the 80's I heard of a singles group called Parents Without Partners. I asked some non members what this club was like. I got concerned looks and comments like "Not the right club for you". I thought they referred to fact that I had no kids. Then anotheratute married woman said " They should call that group Parents Without Pants, as they are just single mother looking for sex partners and who leave their poor lids home alone while they're out fooling around withen. No wonder nobody wants such women as decent proper wives. They're bad mothers, Don't drop your standards mixing with single mothers" So, I gave PWP a miss. Especially after I heard one of their wild parties on the floor above my apartment that went till dawn, when I heard some blood curdling female screams and then thought I was dreaming but I wasn't,as I could sleep, due to their racket, as I saw a matrees and pillows etc sail down pasta my window. As it it was training matresses and pillows etc. They were arguing about whose kids were whose and who'saresponsible parent and who isn't. I don't think very highly of single mothers. I would never inviate one to my house or eventi or rent a place to her as a landlady or welcome one into my club or vive one a job etc. They may noto be able help it, but, unless they are widowed,I really would not wish to know them or mix with them.
