  • Louis finally installed a 50 Amp generator box on the house so we can use our generator in case of a power outage. While our power doesn't go out that often up here in the mountains, when it does, our well pump and house pups stop working, and in the winter, we risk severe freeze damage to our pipes and hot tub. Now we have the system in place to plug in our 9500-watt backup generator just in case something happens.
Watch this video to see Louis walking through all the steps and materials needed to prepare your home for backup power.
    Materials Used:
    50 Amp Generator Inlet Box
    Generator Interlock Kit
    6 Guage Wire
    3/4" Electrical Conduit and Fittings

Nice video. FYI, it is call a generator inlet box, not an outlet box, as you mentioned at the beginning of the video, so because of the configuration of the male electrical tabs being exposed. An outlet box has female recessed electrical slots so you don’t get electrocuted sending power out of the electrical box.

Love your house! Where are you located, I'm guessing Oregon, Washington state, Utah.

Really great video ! I'm having a problem with getting to some of the screw's on my inlet box, did you have any problems like that? What brand inlet box is that?

Thanks... It's a Sprance 50 amp, I got it on Amazon for $42. Honestly getting the cables pushed in is kinda a pain because they are so thick. The key thing that I did was wire the inlet first then I pulled the slack up to the Panel that way I had less cable and more room to work with.

Ok thx ! There are a lot of boxes out there and they all pretty much look the same. Again, thx and I liked the simplicity of the way you explained everything you were doing.

You cannot recode black wire with colored tape to red, white and green on #6 THHN wire, #4 and larger only.

Don't worry if you turn on both the generator and have Utility power on.. You blow the panel up. As you will find out what Phase to Phase means. It will be like a JDAM went off in your house..As the Generator and Utility have different phase angles..
I would add. Never trust them no touch voltage testers. They can lie to you.. Trust me...
