Lol. I had the same thought when he said, "You can try any guitar you want".
I went to a guitar center many years back, and a friend and I were playing a couple floor model acoustics in that room they have for them. There was one employee starring at me and my friend every time he walked by. Eventually, he opened the door to the acoustic room, poked his head in, and said "You guys can't use picks with those guitars, we can't have any scratching on the tops". I looked down, and already the guitar had shown signs that it had been played with a pick, and we weren't doing anything crazy with them. The picks were given to us by another employee. We just said alright, and proceeded to play finger style. lol.
Few minutes go by, my buddy is picking up another guitar off the rack while I'm sitting, the dude passes by again, looks, stops, again pokes his head in, and proceeds to exclaim "Watch your belt buckles, we have people all the time coming in and leaving buckle rash on the backs". Neither of us had exposed belt buckles, he must have saw my friend holding the guitar standing up seeing how it felt, and thought he was possibly damaging it if he DID have a belt buckle. At this point, we both laughed, walked out of the room, spent another 20 minutes looking around, and left.
We weren't even playing $1000+ guitars... I believe I had a mid-end Ibanez or Martin, same with my friend. Maybe the guy was having a bad day and just wanted to pick on people, maybe it was something about my friend and I personally, perhaps somebody previously that day had given him a hard time or was caught doing those very things he accused us of doing. Thinking about it now, its like, those guitars aren't floor models to sit around on racks all day in perfect condition not to be touched by anyone... They're meant to be tried and fooled around with, within reason of course, to decide if you want the shiny new version boxed in the stock room. That includes playing the guitar like you would at home, and if you happen to play with a pick, as long as you're not strumming the life out of the guitar, I feel it really wasn't worth worth the employee giving people a hard time over and possibly ruining their experience going to a physical store.
Personally we just laughed it off, and we still went to that location many times. Eventually, we stopped seeing that particular employee. Figures. Hahaha

    • @vikdopak2166
      @vikdopak2166 4 ปีที่แล้ว +76

Exactly. I was in a guitar shop a few times just to pick up an order, but few days ago, when I was there with my sister(her being there for the first time, so she was quite scared) and we decided to try some guitars and basses. Employees were walking around giving us a weird look, like we are jumping around with the stuff or I dunno. We were trying some quite cheap stuff so I dunno what was their problem. Eventually I got sick of their looks so we just left...

Being an employee at Guitar Center (I no longer work in sales, I work in the warehouse now in the back but did work the sale floor for over a year), its not the sales team's fault. We have certain numbers to hit and have sales percentages to keep per hour per company policy. Starting wages are minimum wage at every location and the rest is based off of commission, which can only be a maximum of 2%, and thats if your sales per hour is at $500, which is much harder to achieve than you think. We also have to be pushy and cell the Pro Coverage warranty, because its 100% profit for the store. It is worth it, depending on price, as it covers literally anything besides fire damage and theft. The thing is though, if we pitch the warranty to you and you decline, we actually get reprimanded for that and get our asses chewed out because you have to keep a 35% or higher Pro Coverage sales rate over your overall sales number to keep your job. If you dip below 35%, you get a "coaching module" with your manager which is actually a write up, and if you get three of them in a given time period for not hitting your 35%, then you are terminated.
Moral of the story, the sales teams at Guitar Centers really do want to help out and get you the gear and what not that you need, but upper management and corporate force those numbers and hold the sales teams jobs on the line if they don't hit the numbers. We do want to help and be friendly, but sometimes the pushiness is so we can keep our job and make more than $250 a bi-weekly paycheck, even after working 8 to 11 hour shifts five days a week.

I have seen videos on this topic (more than like experiencing it - when I was hunting for my first, the local shop did recommend not to buy the cheapest if you can afford to go a bit higher (like 400 - 600 €)) but some people think that it's a total waste of money if a beginner doesn't buy the "beginner price range guitar" (under 250 €).
And if you can afford it why the hell you couldn't buy an expensive guitar even if "they think your skills don't match that"...

I remember playing the drums for fun at an alto's trying to figure out a simple beat (I've never actually played the drums). I wasn't being particularly loud (in fact I was being pretty damn quiet considering I was banging on drums), I was just experimenting deciding if I wanted to get into drumming. I was a shy 15 year old kid just figuring stuff out.Well one of the employees came over, told me that I am terrible and making his ears bleed, then gave me a set of headphones to plug into the kit.
Well joke is on him, I never hit a drum kit since, and I never demo guitars plugged into an amp unless it's with headphones even though I am pretty okay at guitar. Not just because that guy though, I've always found many people who work at music stores to be extremely opinionated and judgmental. Don't get me wrong, there's also some pretty awesome people I've met at shops, but there seems to be a concentration of assholes in the music industry in my experience.

I had a bad experience in a guitar store in the UK. Happened to me when I was around 16, walked into a guitar store with two friends looking to buy a Gibson Les Paul Studio guitar. They won't allow you just to pick up the guitar and start playing, you need to ask permission. When I asked for permission the employee said to me "if you pass this between your mates, you're getting kicked out". I had full intention of buying that guitar and had the money but the staff put me off from buying at their store. To this day, I've never gone back. In the end I bought from another store and got the guitar £200 cheaper than the other stores price at £1000 at the time.

Guitar stores are my favorite place on Earth, but I always play my worst when trying out a potential purchase. Whatever, I've met guys who work at guitar stores with the same complex. It may be b/c I always turn stuff up to stage volume. I see a lot of guys trying stuff out whisper quiet which is a big mistake when trying out gear that obviously won't be played with the volume way down.
Rise above it, don't worry. Even if the owner comes by and turns your amp down turn it right back up! If you get any flack your just at the wrong store. "Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you priced all of this equipment to sell it." Don't spend your money at a store that doesn't deserve it. EVER.

I don’t have any local shops in my hometown now. I have to go to Nashville which is about an hour away from me. But I like going to the “mom and pop” shops in Nashville and Madison. Eastside and Rumble Seat are my two favorites. Super nice folks and the stuff they have is legendarily cool.

I remember going to a guitar store when I was about 14 and playing respectfully quietly or so I thought, and the sales assistant sarcastically remarked "Wow, a shy guitar player! Have him stuffed". It really upset me. I kind wanted Richard Gere to do the Pretty woman thing with his credit card, so I could come back with 'you guys work on comission right, big mistake, huge', but I don't bat for the other side, however I certainly never went back to that guitar store!!

When you go to New Jersey, right across the bridges from either Delaware or Pennsylvania, is a little shop in Deptford called THE LABORATORY. The owners are usually there, the place is rad, and they are super friendly. Cheers!

One of my favorite guitar stores in Albuquerque. I go there a lot and they always have gear you can’t find anywhere else in the area
