Last year I went to guitar center and there was a 7 string (my preferred guitar) tuned to A standard and i picked it up and I'm insanely nervous to play in front of people because i never really have, well out of spite i just played the first few note of blind by korn figuring out what to play and the employee was like "Oh my God blind haven't heard that in forever give me a minute i want to play it with you" and we ended up playing most of the song it was awesome
I’ve only tried out guitars in a store once, a few weeks ago, and it was a much more terrifying experience than I expected. Nervous, hands sweaty and shaking, forgetting every song or riff I know-and to make matters worse the guy plugged me into an amp that I didn’t know how to use and walked away (I’ve never used a real amp). Not pleasant.
I once played 'Horizons' by Genesis on guitar in a guitar store and the store owner actually came up to me and said it was awesome that I knew how to play that, as not too many people know that song. So try to pick songs and riffs that not too many people know and you'll be ok in a guitar store, lol.
If you're actually intentionally picking songs that you think nobody has heard just so you can impress people (or not annoy) people in guitar stores you seriously need to reconsider your life.
Yeah I would intentionally avoid Metallica riffs, just make up something on the spot. Occasionally put in Desperate Cry by Sepultura cos it has that inverted Bb that sounds huge...
I was in a music store right after Rush released 'Moving Pictures' (1981). Some dude was trying out a guitar and started playing 'Limelight'. Nearby was a guy trying out a bass and he obviously knew the song, and they started playing it together. It was seriously cool unplanned moment.
Follow-up... I have a heavyily distorted crunchy chord pattern I like to play in stores. It's a B-A-G-A thunder riff with 2nd fret B5, 2nd fret "regular" A, grab and bend the 3rd fret G note on low E then back to the A chord. It's 'Mary Had A Little Lamb'. 😃😒
I always play a bit from Master of Puppets because I'm a girl and no one expects me from that and I laugh so hard after seeing their faces :D Happy New Year Dagan and PMT!
I was always a little timid to play in a guitar shop when I was young and first learning as I'd go with my best mate who could really shred at 14. But luckily my local guitar shop we'd go to here (in Sydney Australia) , the salesman/tech would always throw me on any guitar in the store and just say play anything mate just play .! And he'd take the time to teach me riffs and jam with my mate and I.. Haven't seen that salesman in years but thanks Charlie you were a legend
This was very interesting to watch! Had been a while since I've been too a physical music store. The last big one closed down a couple of years ago in my city. I miss it now, seeing your video.

Last time I was in a music store here in the US was over a year ago. I was playing an ESP M2 Custom Kirk Hammet signature model through a BOSS effects pedal display into a Rolland CUBE. I played Ain't Talking About Love and Unchained. Love to see the kids get a kick out of those tunes. I'm 50 by the way.
The pinch of salt disclaimer was definitely something I needed to hear. I am for sure not a beginner but I am so terrified of playing in guitar stores, this will help me a bit. Thank you!
As a bassist, I knew Schism and Higher Ground was definitely on the list for us, since Schism is easily the most unique and simple bass lines to play and Higher Ground being easy to learn for slapping. And the fact that I DID play them myself when I started out but realized soon that everyone knows it's overplayed lol Also, I didn't expect Dagan doesn't know how to slap! I watched his presentation on the GT-B1 because I wanted to buy it. He seems well versed in music so I'd thought he'd dabble with bass as well!
I used to love going to guitar stores - especially when I was younger - it was such a treat. But I’d never know what to play when I got there ha. Now it’s not so much of a big deal as there aren’t many stores really. But when I do find one I enjoy it much more, I just go for it, thankfully my playing is a lot better than it was ha.
I've done that one a couple of times, plus a few other Leppard riffs... Rock of Ages more often, Rock Rock Till You Drop, and Armageddon it, both many times (probably too many), but Switch 625 is the only bass riff I've played in a store that got a random guitarist to join in. That was a good day.
My iconic song in PMT Romford when in was in the old location back in the early 2010's, I would bang out one direction and sing it in store. I also did the deeds of sins and played every song down the list of forbidden songs and I had to walk back with a packet of biscuits haha I'm not sure if they hung out one of my legendary CV's too, I still have them somewhere, but they were special! ooh I miss being a teenager. I had so much fun in those stores and I have spent most of my money on guitars and keyboards since I started working even though I'm suppose to be saving to move out :)

The biggest problem with the Gibson Thunderbird is that the Epiphone sounds better and is a third the price. Gibson have really dropped it with the T bird and Epiphone have really smashed it
When I first started out, I played ‘sweet child o mine’ in a shop in Denmark Street in London, a customer looked at me, tutted and shook his head...... so I turned it up and played it again. People should play what the hell they like. 🤘🏼
Hmm the first riff that i learned was smoke on the water 2 years ago when i started playing guitar but the first whole song that i learned was Lick it up by kiss that was my riff when i were in guitar stores. But now it’s almost anything from Cinderella or any of the old metal bands from the 80’s like Lizzy Borden, autograph, quiet riot, White lion, twisted Sister or Yngwies old stuff from eclipse and those albums with real songs.
Im about to visit a guitar store, but before I get there I'd love to watch an updated version of this list for 2022. Please make it! Only this time try to find 10 songs that may be not overplayed in guitar stores but quite often to be heard.
I spent 10 years working in guitar shops and it is true, Stairway is not overplayed. However, in the shops I worked in, young customers repeatedly played Sweet Child of Mine & Master of Puppets, while most old customers played Blackbird by the Beatles.

What’s the other song/band he mentions when talking about The Chain? Only know that (awesome) riff from that song. Also, glad to see I’m not the only one who can’t recognize a John Mayer song... had no idea what the first song was...

Ended up buying the boss Katana amp and now looking to upgrade my guitar possibly getting a Bronze Series Warlock and upgrading the Humbuckers to possible KH Bone breakers!
The first riff I played when I was looking for my first real guitar was Wipe Out. Don't know if anyone looked funny at me or not as I was so absorbed in the guitar
Funny how things have changed. In the 70’s and 80’s when I was starting to build my collection it was Stairway. Or Smoke On The Water, usually played very wrong. My go to song was always Rock The Nation by Montrose. And my bass go to was Boogie Oogie Oogie by A Taste Of Honey or Geraldine And John by Joe Jackson. Graham Maby and Janice Johnson kill it. Thanks for video.
One of my favourite simple bass riffs to play in a store is Switch 625. I don't know if I'd call it overplayed... I've never worked in a guitar store. But the last time I played at a Long & McQuade in Toronto, I heard a guy in the guitar section around the corner join in, so I kept playing.
Just watched this and as a bass player and funk lover feel like I need to make sure that people know Higher Ground was written by Stevie Wonder. Now, no doubt everyone knows Red Hot Chili Pepper's iconic version and Flea's awesome bass line, but in the original, the bass lick is actually a Moog.
A while back was down in Denver playing at a guitar store. Customer walks by and noticed I was playing Wicked Sensation by George Lynch. I love it when others pick up on classics like that.
Tbh. as a bass player striking those 3 riffs gives me a pretty good idea of the guitar- they cover playing down the neck, up the neck, slap, pick... summed up they also cover all strings (I'd probably go for a different slap song. Forget me nots by Patrice Rushen for example)
I really appreciate the note about anxiety while playing in a guitar shop. There's always some dude shredding and I really struggle to groove because I'm playing outside of my bedroom for once!
Great video, many people are intimidated playing guitars in music stores & not just because the guys that work in these shops are pretty tasty on guitar but if you only know 3 chords or none it doesn't matter because we've all gotta start somewhere & these music shop guys know this, so my advice is just have a go & bollox to what anyone else thinks
Seeing Muse: Psycho on the list caught me off guard because Im 100% guilty of overplaying it after figuring out the song on bass haha. Muse has some great songs for building pinky strength (psycho & reapers are good examples)
I was taught by someone on a Bass in the beginning of my musical guitar journey Smoke on the Water but I personally learned Animal I Have Become by Three Days Grace and Cassie by Flyleaf first.
Was in my local guitar shop in Belfast, Northern Ireland, a couple of years ago and asked one of the staff which song was played the most and surprise surprise it was Slow Dancing In A Burning Room
F1? Did the BBC use The Chain when broadcasting F1 back in the day in Great Britain? Personally I only remember that guitar-focused intro which FOA used until 2002, man that thing rocked.
I never learned the one string version of Iron Man. I didn't even know there was one until now. I learned to play it with two finger power cords. It was the first song I learned to play all the way through.
I think you’ve been playing the song wrong then because only the verse is played with power chords. During the chorus when ozzy starts singing iommi isn’t playing power chords he’s just playing single notes.
That bass riff from _The Chain_ always reminded me of the _Barney Miller Theme._ They're not the same, but they're ve-e-e-ry similar. I wonder if John McVee had watched that show or if it was just "parallel thinking."
I always used to hear two particular green day songs in guitar stores way back in the 90's and early 2000's . One guitar tune was Brain stew and the great old bass line to Long view
13:13 yeah honestly i just play by ear i dont count but i dont have to much trouble with tool songs when it comes to odd time signatures :) i tried to teach my cousin the pot - tool and he couldnt get his head around the rythm.

My go to bass riffs when trying out a bass in store are Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and Rio. Keeps people thinking.
The only time I ever got a compliment in a guitar store was when I was playing everlong. don't be shy in guitar stores, rock out!
Why have I only just come across this channel? It’s mint! (Fellow Geordie) 😂
Happy new year, thanks for all the laughs
I was taught by someone on a Bass in the beginning of my musical guitar journey Smoke on the Water but I personally learned Animal I Have Become by Three Days Grace and Cassie by Flyleaf first.
Was in my local guitar shop in Belfast, Northern Ireland, a couple of years ago and asked one of the staff which song was played the most and surprise surprise it was Slow Dancing In A Burning Room
How do you get that knopfler/ Mayer tone on the one pick up kramer? Need to know.
No SRV on this list. Can’t wait to go to guitar center.
F1? Did the BBC use The Chain when broadcasting F1 back in the day in Great Britain?
Personally I only remember that guitar-focused intro which FOA used until 2002, man that thing rocked.
They did indeed.. Introduced a lot of people to Fleetwood Mac whilst checking out who it was by
Has he done a video on that white sg on the left side of the video?
That Kramer made me sooo happy. Awesome!
I love you man, you're the reason I'ma buy my first guitar.
I feel personally attacked by this list.
I never learned the one string version of Iron Man. I didn't even know there was one until now. I learned to play it with two finger power cords. It was the first song I learned to play all the way through.
I think you’ve been playing the song wrong then because only the verse is played with power chords. During the chorus when ozzy starts singing iommi isn’t playing power chords he’s just playing single notes.
whats the song at 11:18?
That bass riff from _The Chain_ always reminded me of the _Barney Miller Theme._ They're not the same, but they're ve-e-e-ry similar. I wonder if John McVee had watched that show or if it was just "parallel thinking."
I always used to hear two particular green day songs in guitar stores way back in the 90's and early 2000's . One guitar tune was Brain stew and the great old bass line to Long view
13:13 yeah honestly i just play by ear i dont count but i dont have to much trouble with tool songs when it comes to odd time signatures :)
i tried to teach my cousin the pot - tool and he couldnt get his head around the rythm.
Ooo davie504 wont be amused lol, but seriously nice video buddy, does take the pressure off the peps who may be lacking confidence, or scared of being bollocked for a unknown rule lol 🤘
The irony is, that this is one of the 8 most popular guitar video ideas, to put on you tube
