    When I was a kid, I was addicted to this show like a drug. I had a lunchbox with Sky one on the front of it. When I got my first (casette) tape recorder, one of the first things I recorded was this theme right off of the TV. Loved it, loved it, loved it!!!

    The days when you would stop everything to be sitting in front of the tv to watch a programme. UFO, Land Of The Giants, Space 1999- all classics.

    God, I was such a lucky kid, back in the seventies with this classic show, the persuaders, Thunderbirds, to name a few. Compared to the sh!t on tv now - dont even go there

    Wonder how many of you know that Benedict Cumberbatch's (Sherlock, Star Trek into darkness, etc. etc.) mum was in this series? The lovely Wanda Ventham, played Colonel Lake.

    Sexy purple hair women with silver boots, secret space station on the moon, UFO interceptors launched from underwater submarines.... Ahhhh, I really missed the 80s.

    Gotta be the BEST title sequence ever made for a TV show !
    And yes, we could have been on the moon by 1980, or at least by 1999, if only we'd had a few Aliens to worry about.

    One of the first colour TV programmes I ever saw. UFO remained a favourite throughout 1970. I loved the alien abduction angle of the first show which featured a chase scene with humans being gunned down in a pine forest. The show combined Gerry Anderson's puppetised model-making heritage with groovy innuendo and plenty of smoking and drinking. There were a few 'stinkers' but some absolute UFO gems too. ATV Classics.

    Great visuals and a very cool theme tune. Like the mrjohnavery flying across at the end, nice touch. 1980 was supposed to be in the future back then...

    The sound quality on this clip is fantastic!
    This was, in my opinion, the best theme music of any of Gerry Anderson's TV series (live-action or Supermarionation), hands down!
    This version does not have the teletype sound that appeared in the opening credits of the series' 26 episodes.

    I want to see THIS as an XCOM mod. :) I read an article about how this show and Space 1999 were connected. Moon base Alpha was the expansion of the original S.H.A.D.O. moon base and S.I.D. had also been upgraded to be a Hawk launch point to intercept the aliens. After that point, the invasion stopped and the Hawks were scrapped, and their tech used to make the Eagles. Loved both of these shows. I still own a meter long Eagle toy (mostly destroyed). Good times. :)

    The exterior of the film studios at the beginning was ATV's (and now the BBC's) Elstree TV Studios. Interiors (and a great backlot exterior) were filmed first at nearby MGM British but later at Pinewood.

    Wonderful title sequence - I remember this from its first broadcast in 1969/70. Sorry to read this week that Gerry Anderson has Alzheimers - I saw him speak at the 2005 World SF Convention in Glasgow, and he had some great stories to tell of the production of his shows.

    This got onto late junction last Thursday and then on Friday evenings Radio 3 In Concert The BBC Philharmonic played a suite from Thunderbirds. It might be the start of Barry Grey's re-valution as the great composer he undoubtledly was.

    @ericdapugi Straker was played by Ed Bishop.
    Partly, he was cast because the Straker character was supposed to be an American Apollo-era astronaut who had retired from NASA and became head of a London film studio.
    Of course, then studio was a cover for SHADO!

    Gerry at his absolute best.

  • @MarkJSau
    @MarkJSau 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ericdapugi The actor is Ed Bishop. He had previously worked for Gerry & Sylvia Anderson as the voice of one of the characters in Captain Scarlet, so there was a previous connection; and they always tended to have some American-voiced characters in their Supermarionation productions (Thunderbirds being the obvious one, as it was based around an American family), so perhaps this was just a natural carry-over. A better outcome than when Lew Grade insisted on Landau & Bain for Space 1999 :-)

  • @MrPaulb1001
    @MrPaulb1001 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Who would have thought that the building that Straker drives up to is 100 yards from Albert Square. Both sites are at the Elstree studios in Borehamwood.

    You know that most ppl who DO end up here are just into enjoying the production values, design, theme's, etc... What i'm trying to say is that it's refreshing to come to a person who's dedicated some time to produce an interest of theirs and there is no negativity. There's only one thing I wish was different and it's not of this page, it's that my Ed Bishop signed postcard was to me and not someone else. Still LOVE it though. Mr J, thanks.

    I always wanted to see a X-files/UFO crossover. Scully and Mulder spend 55 minutes of the show uncovering the immienent invasion of Earth by aliens. When all looks helpless, Ed Bishop strolls on the set and says, "Great work, kids. Now get out of the way and let the grown ups handle this.... :-)

    Barrt Gray died 26 April, 1984. You are thinking of John Barry, who did pass away recently, and also did the film score for Disney's "The Black Hole", arguably the best part of the movie.

    GROOVY BABY! Yeah!! 1980 isn't a very far off prediction of the future when it's 1973. Or was it one thousand nine hundred and eighty years later and not just 7 when everyone is wearing polyester jump suits? Well maybe just suits. But they missed on the big hair - purple yes for some but not big enough. Did you dance around the family rec room to this show when you were a kid? How bout just now? Awesome stuff.
