Gacharic Spin's member history is kinda fascinating, but at the end of the day, the 4 members in the core group have been the same for the vast majority of the time. They are Koga (bass), Hana (Drums, Vocals, guitar), Tomo-Zo (lead guitar), and Oreo (Keyboards, vocals).
The fluidity of other members has usually had to with the band filling in gaps for performances as needed, rather than members not getting along or anything like that. The original singer left due to health problems, but instead of replacing her, Hana and Oreo traded off lead vocals. The problem was that they were stuck behind the drums and keyboards respectively, which hurt crowd engagement. So they added two dancers to help hype the crowd. One had to leave for school, so a new girl came in to fill that spot. Over the course of the next several years, these two dancers left as well (one because of hearing loss, the other for school, I think).
At this point, the band decided to do a bit of a refresh. Instead of just bringing in two new dancers, they brought in Yuri (drums) and Angelina (vocals, dance). Hana had been drumming and sing simultaneously up to this point, which was really difficult. With Yuri in on drums, Hana could cut back on that balancing act, and now plays rhythm guitar while trading off vocals with Angelina and Oreo. (Also, they currently have another drummer filling in for Yuri, who is on maternity leave).
For people checking out the band for the first time, it can be a bit confusing because even within all of the above stuff, the members don't always stay in their lane. They likes to take full advantage of all members during concerts. Tomo-zo sings lead on a few songs, Hana will pop off a guitar lead here and there, sing, then go back to the drum kit for a song. Yuri will do a little rap section while drumming, and in the past they have had dancers play guitar or keyboards on occasion, just to mix things up.
Like their lineup, when it comes to their music, they like to throw literally everything at the wall to see what sticks. They have songs with sections of pop, funk, disco, rock, hip-hop, metal, electronic, and more. At least for my taste, this has resulted in their music being a bit hit-or miss for me. Absolutely love some stuff, while other songs just don't come together in my opinion. But there's no denying that they are supremely talented musicians, and the energy they bring to their live shows is legendary.

    Nice reaction
"I Wish I" and "MindSet" were released last year and are from the same album.
yuri is Gacharic Spin's drummer since 2019 (actually, tomorrow will be her 3rd anniversary as Gacha's member and yesterday was her birthday) but she was on maternity leave during the recording of the album and the music videos. As someone mentioned in the comments, Hana recorded the drum parts in studio and she also plays drums on "MindSet" MV. She switched on guitar for "I Wish I" MV and Levin (which is band's support drummer) plays on the drums for this occasion only.
You like the exuberance and energy of the band but you didn't see them live yet. It's on another level. You don't need coffee or energy drink after that. I usually play Gacharic Spin's songs when I'm doing exercices, it's the perfect soundtrack.
You also have to check out the band DOLL$BOXX. it's a side project which consist of Fuki (from the band Unlucky Morpheus) as a singer and...Gacharic Spin as musicians. They released their only full length album in 2012 and an EP in 2017. The ideal start is with the song "Take My Chance".
    Thank you :)

Great reaction and there ladies have consistently created some amazing music over the last 12 years and adding Angie and Yuri (new drummer) three years ago has added an element that was missing for a while (lead vocals) and allowed Hana the freedom to expand the range of their music. The bassist, Koga, was the model in the video, before she started in bands she was a model (in high school I believe).

I absolutely LOVE Angies performance in the spoken part! It really conveys the meaning even tho I don't understand Japanese. She is such a bloody good front woman! Imagine she was hired to be the energiser bunny and they managed to stumble upon such a diamond in the rough. She didn't really think she could sing before and kind of find her voice after she joined.

It's notable that you commented on pink-haired Angie. In many ways, I find her to be the most interesting member of the band. All the others are fantastic, talented, experienced musicians. Angie joined the band as a high-school cheerleader -- no music industry experience whatsoever. And she has blossomed into not only an excellent front woman for them vocally, she has an excellent stage presence in live performance, and also brought some brilliant song/lyric writing to the mix. A rough gemstone who has been turned into a fabulous diamond by the opportunity provided to her by Koga and the rest of the band.

Here are some connections (and rabbit holes ;-):
Gacharic Spin and Fuki got together a few years ago to do a project together, called Doll$Boxx (Check the song Take my chance, for some fun ;-) Their other songs are fantastic too on that mini-album they made together ). Fuki is a very well known and respected singer in Japan. She is also the lead singer for Unlucky Morpheus (You'll love this band. Songs like Unending Sorceress (Song about the Final Fantasy game), Knight of Sword, Black Pentagram, Cadaver Revadac (Same song sheet music played forward then backwards).
Now, Fuki also did a song with Syu, song is called Reason.
Syu is considered one of the best guitarists in Japan, and one of the best in the world by those in the know. Syu is also the guitarist for the band Galneryus (who you'll also love. Check their song Angel of Salvation)
Gacharic Spin - Fuki (Doll$Boxx) - Unlucky Morpheus - Fuki and Syu - Galneryus :-D
And you know they're all amazeballs as they're all from Japan :-)

The band's latest album was created amidst and following Japan's nationwide Covid shutdown and many of it's songs are directly influenced by the band's experiences. The overlapping vocals of "I wish I" are a reflection of the online screaming matches that were pervasive in the beginning, and Angie (who was finishing high school at the time) described it as too many people believing they were the only ones who had the right answers, and she became deeply concerned about the type of future world she was going to have to live in. The nude is by KOGA, the band's founder (and former gravure model) who said the figure represents the helpless, hopeless feeling people felt as the Covid crisis evolved and overwhelmed their daily lives, followed by the sense of relief and optimism as the lockdown finally ended.
A truely amazing work from any artisitic or technical viewpoint you choose, but the most impressive part for me is Angie's performance. She was hired in early 2019 when she was a barely 17 cheerleader with zero stage or voice training, and has slowly evolved from a replacement "hype girl" for the recently departed Mai (who left at the end of 2018) to a rapper/chorus singer to a full-on lead singer and frontwoman. KOGA admits she really doesn't know why she hired a raw unproven talent like Angie, other than she admired her guts and spirit. (KOGA left home at 14 to become a gravure model, so I'm sure there's some sort of that kindred spirit thing going on.) Angie is literally the baby of the group, as she is 13-15 years younger than the other members (and maybe 7 years younger than new drummer yuri, who was on maternity leave for this video), but KOGA has completely remade the band's image with Angie as the centerpiece, even to the point of having her dominate the new album's artwork, with imagery empasizing that "Angie is carrying Gacharic Spin on her back." The band has dropped the "traveling circus" image it had for years and has become more of a traditional rock band. Older songs have been rearranged to accomodate Angie's vocal range and style, and old/new songs all feature more hard-rock elements.

    • @PrymalChaos
      @PrymalChaos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you for this excellent insight. I haven't heard anyone else mention the Covid relationship with the new material. I guess it makes sense though.
It's funny, as a new fan who has only really experienced Angie as part of the group, I feel like I noticed that what she brings is a youthful exuberance and attitude. The band is exceptionally talented but when they focus that through Angie's lens you get something that rarely exists, mature virtuosic playing with a effortlessly cool youthful facade.

Yeah, that was Hana on rhythm guitar in the video. The current drummer Yuri was on maternity leave during the filming of this video and the recording of this album, so Hana did the recorded drums, but Yuri is back with them. This video “featured” a guest drummer (Yevin) but because they were only a guest they weren’t a major part of the video
Also cool that you got to hear Hana’s growls and screams. You spoke about Angie being a great front woman (and she is!), but Hana and Koga (the bassist and the nude model in the video) are to me the heart and soul of the band

Hey, excellent dissertation. This latest Gacharic Spin LP (self-titled, released in 2021) for me marks a new beginning for the band. And the lead vocalist has a lot to do with it. They have improved a lot. If you want to complete a fun trip you can tour different bands through their collaborations. Gacharic Spin ---> DOLL$BOXX (Fuki, vocals) ---> Unlucky Morpheus (Morishita, drums) ---> Galneryus. It literally consists of going down to Doom/Power Metal from Funk/Punk rock. Highly recommended. And in my case, it is hard to come back from there, no matter the musical genres you listen to. At the beginning, I entered into this amazing world through two Japanese female jazz musicians: Hiromi Uehara (piano) and Senri Kawaguchi (drums) which are for me my favourite ones by far in their musical fields. シャキシャキ in an onomatopoeia that has a couple of meanings. One is 'crispy', as in biting into fresh veg, but it could also mean dealing with things in a brisk and efficient manner. I've read that シャキシャキして was written for an energy drink commercial, so crisp, sharp, brisk, refreshing is the gist. The hint in the English part of the lyrics is "Wake up!" - it's a jolt of energy. The MV effectively has them doing a workout routine. The translation was right but needs context to interpret fully. Great track. :oD

"世界はとても美しい" - The world is very beautiful (Sekai wa totemo utsukushii).
But yes a lot of those J-something bands have members that are multi-instrumentalists. I read somewhere that in Japan music education in school is mandatory for a few years and that's why, I have not yet tried to verify though, so grain of salt...
So Gacharic Spin definately know how to have fun with music, here's "Tamashii" played on Toy Instruments...: th-cam.com/video/DzoxNWNnFpw/w-d-xo.html
Pretty sure *DOLL$BOXX* has been brought up before, but yeah, "Take My Chance" and "Shout Down" as well as "sekaiwa kitto aiwo shiterunda" are all well worth a listen and introduce one to Fuyuki Tenge (Fuki), singing with Gacharic Spin, which leads nicely into "Unlucky Morpheus", her main band, and they have a loooong and awesome song history. I especially love everything from their Vampir EP but pretty much everything they do is great.
Another band that springs to my mind going forward from Gacharic Spin is そこに鳴る - "Sokoninaru". Three-piece band that's really hard to describe for me. They do a lot of covers, but their main style is proggy, math-rocky, punky, metally stuff. Took me a few listens to really get into, but nowadays I cannot get enough of them. "Lament Moment" and "re:program" would be my top picks.
As I always do, honorable mention to 妖精帝國 - "Yousei Teikoku", lots of great music, but very few good music videos sadly. Most of the things I'd recommend come without moving pictures, which disqualifies them from most reactors, but you might want to listen to a few off-screen anyway. "Ranshou Aion", "葬送フリヰジアン (Sou sou friesian)", "絶 (Zetsu)" and "白銀薔薇奇譚 (Shirogane Bara Kitan)" would be my top picks, with "Paradiso≒Inferno" mentioned because it has an actual music video.

As soon as I discovered her in Mindset, I thought she could move to the cinema world and become an actress, because of her such strong presence on screen. But to be honest, I hope she never will move in that way, because the band (and all of us as listeners) need her presence in Gacharic Spin and in the music world. This right there might be my favourite song of 2021! It's just amazing and genious. Someone also uploaded a version with english subtitles. I suggest you take a look at that one, too! The lyrics really elevated this song even more for me!

Their new drummer Yuri was away due to maternity leave at the time of the filming this so Levin was filling in for her. That's why they are obscuring her face throughout the MV. Yuri is back from maternity leave now. Yes, Hana is regularly on the guitar now.
I recommend "Tamashii" LIVE for the next Gacharic video if interested (all members present) >>>> th-cam.com/video/Jt7-GGRa3nc/w-d-xo.html

A quick history of Gacharic Spin. An expanded one I normally do for Doll$boxx
They were formed by FC Chopper (bass) and Hana (drums/guitar) in 2009 and also had a guitarist Eita and vocalist Armmy. Eita left the band after a few months and they recruited Tomo Z.
Then in 2012 Armmy left/kicked of out the band. Armmy was really had habit of not turning up for practice sessions, the band started a tour of Japan, hoping thing would be better, but after Ammry fail to show for the 1st 3 shows the band had enough and when on TV and asked if anyone knew their songs and if they did turn up at a show and they can sing for them on stage. The band were contacted by a singer called Fuki (Light Bringer, Unlucky Morpheus, + loads more) saying she was a fan and knew all the songs. So the band when on tour in Japan with Fuki as the singer for the majority of the rest of the Japanese tour. During the tour Oreo joined as a support member, then 10 then later full member. They then did a tour in France and tried out a few other singers that did not fit. So the decision was taken for Hana to sing, but then they had the problem of no one out front moving around to keep the crowd entertained, so they got in some dancers, Mai and then Arisa.
The Band had so much fun working with Fuki, so much so they wanted to work together more, so they started the side project called Doll$boxx (hence the reason for people asking for Doll$boxx).
Arisa left the band in 2015 because she was entering her senior year of high school and wanted to focus on her studies. Mai got her best friend from school and fan of the band Nenne.
Nenne left the band in 2016 due to hearing problems, which could of made her deaf if she carried on playing live.
In 2018 Mai graduated from the band.
Then 2019 happened. Up to this point Gacharic Spin had very much been a Funk rock band and anything heavier was given to Doll$boxx to play. Hana stepped away from the drums to play guitar and be an up front singer, and Yuri joined on drums (and you think Tomo Z looks happy.....). They also got in a young joint singer called Angelina 1/3 (or the pink haired Duracell bunny). Angie has allowed the band to go in a different direction musically, more heavier/punkish with all the energy she has bought to the band, something you get the feeling they have wanted to do for a while.

Gacharic Spin as the name suggest you wouldn’t know what you’ll expect from them musically,I didn’t expect MindSet as their first single for their new self titled album after their heavy rock/nu metal album Gold Dash. They play and mix a lot of different styles of music from electronic dance rock to hard rock, pop rock, alt rock, funk, punk,nu metal, they even have some synth pop songs that reminds me of early 90’s Depeche Mode.

    Massive missive?! Nice…
Hana’s primary focus changed to frintwoman with guitar since hiring Yuri on drums 3yrs ago. These two songs lead off the latest (self titled) album. But Yuri’’s maternity leave has since meant Hana recorded drums, and this video (anti)features touring drummer Levin. Notably, their fillin the previous two times?, another multi instrumentalist, MurataTamu of Nemophila. The scene there is very close, interwoven…
Hana pronounced haha Hana, not hand Hana. Also, it’s a pitch based language; so it means flowers, but is easy to mistake for (almost impossible for us to hear, we think it’s stress/emphasis changing until it’s pointed out it’s subtle pitch up/down) Hana meaning Nose; hence her Metallic Spin Europe character’s stage name, Nose. Also ha is ha from hachi(8) and na is na from nana(7), so she wears #87 (despite birth year 86), and of course she uses the Hana-banana line of gags, I mentioned their show is slapstick, right?!
