"Is This The Best Camera For Cyclists?" - no question - simply yes - love it. use gopro8 for cycling in black forest. it gives me new possibilities. thanks to you for testing!
@@ChrisMillerCycling The GoPro 8 sound is satisfactory and therefore usable. The occasional ambient noise in my short video for example ( th-cam.com/video/4j8kHpbhfJs/w-d-xo.html ) comes from the GoPro 8. For wind noise while driving, you would probably need an additional windbreak. In private videos I also use the spoken word from GoPro 8 - it's good enough. Of course, it would be better with Lavalier microphone. Using Firmware 01.60. Hope I could help.
A cheap foam wind cover that slides over the camera will make all the difference in the world! I'm testing the 8 now but am finding even with the windscreen there's certain frequencies it just can't handle. By comparison the Osmo Action does very well with a foam wind cover, much better than the HB7 or 8 but you get a more cropped in field of view and miss out on that sweet GP colour profile. It's amazing that action cams neglect wind noise so much and don't include first party solutions in the box!
Thanks Chris - the mount is a deal breaker. Got a great deal on a used Osmo Action which I think will do the quality I need with the mount I like (frame) and the plus of the front screen.
Wow, you are great to watch super engaging and funny and also extremely informative and unbiased. Refreshing! I will be checking out your other videos and have subscribed. Thanks, Chris!
Hey Hanz, I actually think the 9 is almost after a different market, especially when we are taking about “on the bike” footage. Don’t get me wrong, for vlogging it seems like the perfect option, but you certainly don’t need a front facing camera when you are mounting the camera to the bike. The form factor of the 9 is also noticeable bigger, something to consider if you want to film a race. For me, I’ve been back using the 8 for all our rave videos recently and I really like it.
@@ChrisMillerCycling It makes complete sense, I'm actually new to gopro and is still trying to find out what is best for cycling. I'm loving the reviews for gopro 7, but the fact that hero 8 has a better stabilization then I guess I should go for gopro 8 then. This is really helpful, you became a hero with this respond of yours and the unbiased review. You saved my grumpy ass! Lol Good job Chris!
Chris, need to drop the iso on the camera (cap it at 400) for less over exposure, the 3 mics on the camera work pretty well for me, best audio than all other gopros.
Great vid mate! I just started on youtube and this video helped me a lot, I just needed to add a bit of sponge on the mic for the wind noise to stop, you could have mention that. +1 sub anyway !
Hey man. Thanks for the comment. I’m still trying to find the best so audio solution for it. Because I really do love it’s stabilisation and image quality, and you just can’t beat how rugged it is
Hey Blake, yep the mods will be interesting and the reality is I think the audio and battery life can be improved with firmware updates. But it does bug me that products like this are released before they are truly ready for market.
@@ChrisMillerCycling yeah I hear you I wonder if the silicon protective case would help with wind noise as well. Well Gopro sent American stock to Australia to begin with so seems like they got more than just one or two things wrong with it.
Subscribed. Thank you for the most honest Gopro review on TH-cam, looking forward to watch more of your concent. I´m using my Samsung Galaxy S7 to film my rides, monted on the handelbares with the official Samsung Cover (I´m able to mount on it a Widelens 108° and telephotolns x2 from Samsung). The video quality is decent using Filmic Pro app. The only feature I´m missing is that I can´t get thoses chest shots with the phone. Would you recommend geting a Gopro 7? (I´m still waiting for the perfect Gopro, however the image quality of my phone still looks better than even the Gopro 8).
Just wondered if you've tried the GoPro Max 360? There might be some different things you could do with that. Also, have you been swooped on by the magpies yet this year?
I haven’t tried it Donn, and after waiting $600 on this I doubt I’ll be affording anything new sometime soon. I did get a few swoops this Spring, but I wasn’t down south too often, so didn’t get too many.
Bro the reason the audio is bad is because you aren't editing the audio properly in post. The wind noise distortion will be there, but you can tone it down a done and correct for gain in your voice. There are plenty of TH-cam videos on this.
Problem i have with the hero 8 after buying it for my motorbike, is to charge it you have to leave the battery door open ??? whos bloody idea was that....i feel the hardware for the hero 8 took a massive step backwards, softwares good, but not the hardware
Maybe you do not know how to make the audio better, simply adding dead cats or using a foamy substance on the mic . and I don't know where you bought this camera from, It was released at a price of $400 , maybe you got looted at $600, if you're including the price of mounts, you bought the wrong mounting accessories, you can get cheap accessories and maybe a few good ones totaling less that 80-100 dollars.
Hey Adver. So I have tried the windjammer system with limited success. It’s just not good enough to have to glue a fluffy piece of wool on the device in my opinion

How have you found the audio quality mate? I've just done a firmware update, hoping it might help.

Great unbiased review Chris. Very helpful to anyone out there considering an action Cam 😊👌🚴♀️

I know little about hero 8 audio, but can't you attach a separate microphone with wind screen to solve the noise problem?
to sort the audio issue then it may be a good idea to put a wind fluffy thingy on it
You are right George’s. But after spending $600 on it, the thought of having to add more things to it seemed a little unfair.
Hello! Now that Gopro 9 is out, can you still say you don't recommend hero 8 or is it still an overkill upgrade compared to hero 7?

You gotta put fuzz over your go pro's mic holes to prevent wind buzz. They sell it at craft stores for pennies.
What's the best cycling camera/vid in your opinion? Do you mount it on your Handlebars
Chris, so what is the ALTERNATIVE?
Just found this video after ordering one as my first ever action camera...
I read great reviews for the 7 so thought it would be a good one to go for.
Looks like there are some good deals out there for the 7, probably a good call
Loving all the new videos you have been putting out recently!
Thanks Christoffer! Just changing it up while I can, apprentice yet he fact you have noticed.

What mount are you using, and where is the camera mounted? I love the POV where you can only see the road, no handlebars or arms

Will be interesting to see the mod coming in December. Great video and honest opinion on the gopro.

And the non replaceable lens cover on the 8 sucks! 7 is the still the best really.. Great Vid 👍🏻
this is one of my dream camera...hopefully i can have one soon...
Have you got it yet? I got mine a few weeks ago and I started on youtube because of it, it's so much fun!
no budget for this cam yet...need to save money
First while wearing my brand new Nero hat
What mount are you using that connects below your Garmin?
Try K-Edge
What if you put an old sock on it to tame down the wind? I feel that is a low to no cost solution to one of your biggest gripes.
Wow, You are driving by just one hand, amazing!!!
Have u never seen that before my guy
How is it from a security perspective? Capturing number plates, etc.
its great if you're shooting at 4k only, its 1080 sucks
2.7k might also do
Love your vids, abit off topic what size are your handlebars width?
Billy Riggs I was going to ask that they look very narrow.
36cm bars mate. Once you go narrow, you never go back 😂😂
@@ChrisMillerCycling -wow. looks like that's gonna be my next purchase. I'm on 42's. Thanks for the reply
Have you tried a wind sock?
Nope. $600 ... wasn’t in the mood to spend more on another accessory.
I hear you.
Great video, I can see another riding techniques when using a camera...
It is actually crazy how good that stabilisation was ... simply handheld with no selfie stick or anything.

Thanks for the tip. I have started recording in RAW and isolating the front mic, look it is better, but still not a workable solution on the bike.
what about DJI action cam for cyclist like us... it has screen bothside?
All the reviews and the specs look great. I haven’t tried one and I doubt I can afford anything new after (wasting) $600 on this things
What about an aero camera? I spent $13k for the Venge I don’t wanna put a brick in front of the bike!!!😂
TOTALLY hear you on this! I must say it’s one of the advantages of the Sony as it is a much narrower profile.
Has there been an audio update yet?
Not yet. I have tried things like the windjammer and other solutions that have made it workable. But for pure audio the DJI is still my go to.
It’s not that expensive. Just get one, it’s honestly the best.
So great
Thank you for saving me from buying this!
The GoPro 9 is out now lol
Horse Radish I know, I saw it after this video, and now I’m thinking about it! 🤔
No mention on battery life?
Guessing it’s still as poor as all other gopros I’ve used
So disappointing mate. Just back from L’etape with it, and it performed really poorly. Trust me ... a vlog is coming and it won’t be pretty
Good one 👍😊
hmmm i think the gopro has the tech of the future gopros. theyre just releasing it one by one so that they can saturate the market
Problem i have with the hero 8 after buying it for my motorbike, is to charge it you have to leave the battery door open ??? whos bloody idea was that....i feel the hardware for the hero 8 took a massive step backwards, softwares good, but not the hardware

Is you gopro session, hero 5 session?
It was. I don’t think there is a more recent version of the session
@@ChrisMillerCycling thanks for the post, nearly bought the 8...👍
The mics on this camera are fantastic. You are not set up correctly. Im a cyclist and have zero wind noise on my footage,
Really!!! Has there been a firmware update I haven't tried yet? I'm still getting horrific noise.
Then I’ll get a seven then!!
So if this camera is so terrible, why do you call it "overkill"and also do not mention any alternatives?
Terrible review.
First !!!
