Men who are empathetic, gentle, and kind in general are the strongest and toughest men I know. In fact, my favorite nurse practioner is a guy! He is such a good listener and good at what he does. We need more guys who are not afraid to be empathetic and we need more guys in nursing!
Im a 31 yo male and 4th LEVEL RN student During clinicals on a pediatric floor, I entered the room and introduced myself to the mother and her 3 children. The youngest asked me, "Are you a Doctor?" I smiled and said, "No sir, I am a Nursing student." He laughed hysterically. I smiled again, looked at the mother, then looked at the little boy and asked, "why is that funny?" He said, "You're not a nurse. Only girls are nurses." ... ... It was at that moment, I realized my entire life was a lie.

Future male nurse here. My program starts in less than a month now and I feel like I'm waiting for Christmas lol. This was the most encouraging video I've seen so far. Thanks man. Subbed. Loving your channel :)
@king of rains gotta do what ya love! No career is just "for everyone". I finished my program and love my nursing job. So much better than the job I held for 9 years prior. Pays almost exactly the same, yet I feel much more happy and fulfilled.
Kathleen Lamothe thank you so much Kathleen! It’s completely undeserved I promise you I’m not an inspiration just a normal guy who started making videos in college, but I still very much appreciate the compliment! Best of luck in your career!
Love the content and your emotional/spiritual vulnerability. I'm a new RN recently out of an ABSN program and now on a Medical unit in a Level 1 trauma center. Planning to stay for a year and then transition to Step Down before going to the MICU. I appreciate your passion and perspective.... my first career was as a Broadway performer and ballet dancer, so I've always felt like a unicorn as a straight male in my chosen professions. My unit is probably 90 plus percent women, but I'm sure it's a whole different story in the various ICUs at my hospital. You got a new subscribe from me.... keep spreading your voice, brother!!
first time I have seen a clip from Josiah. Went on to review several others. Found all of them to have been done very well....excellent! Obviously intelligent man, great grasp of subject, excellent presentation skills, suspect excellent clinician. As a retired male nurse with almost 60 years experience I totally enjoyed his presentations, identified with all of them and, am proud to be a fellow nurse.
Its true that we can have as much empathy as our female colleagues. I recently nursed a patient through his last 48 hours and when he finally died I felt some of the pain that his family felt. Inside there was that sense of sadness even though death for him was a merciful release. As for gender bias things are a lot better in nursing that when I entered the profession in the early 80's. Then I was not allowed to nurse women and a career in midwifery was a definitely off the cards. The reason for the latter was just on empathy grounds because our anatomy was different. Men could not be good midwives because we would not be able to have empathy with a woman giving birth because we cannot do it ourselves. Also women in labour would not like a man looking after them. Well a woman in second stage of labour does not give a stuff about the gender of the person looking after them. They just want someone who is competent. And those making the rules often had not had children themselves and overlooked the fact that most doctors at the time were male. Thankfully these are now water under the bridge and the old barriers for men having a fulfilling career in nursing are gone. The only one now is NHS burn out through working on understaffed wards that have heavy workloads..
Great video dude. About to jump ship from public accounting and pursue becoming a CNA. Ultimate goal is to be in nursing home management. I want to destroy the nursing home stereotype that they're unsafe and a place for people to slowly wither away. Currently in the middle of my last tax season before I start a CNA program this summer and begin working as a CNA to learn the in's and out's of delivering the best possible care to seniors.
I am a woman and had a male nurse when I was admitted to the hospital. I loved the idea of having a male nurse!! I loved the idea of having a “man “ take care of me!! Now I’m in my 50’s and I am in a relationship with a man that is caring and attentive to my needs...when we are close to each other, he can tell me when a “hot flash” is about to start, before I can “!!! I am “TEAM MALE NURSES” all the way!!!
Great video, I love it when you point of that people under state the difficulty of nursing school because medical school "wasn't for them". Keep on, keeping on!
I'm in nursing school. Can't wait to start working as a male nurse. The girls in my class have talked about this topic but it does not bother me. They seemed to be more bothered than me. I like that you gave a different perspective about manliness. All men should learn from this. Even doing chores at home won't make them less manly. It will make them better men.
I do not see men becoming Nuns. However, some women want to be Catholic Priests. Many of the male RN's I've encountered are gay like many Catholic Priests. I do not have a problem with a male or female RN as long as they have great social skills.
I only wanna do nursing cuz it’ll help me get into med school easier ( cuz I’ll work while studying and it’s a good paying job) also most hospitals pay for your bachelors and masters. Yes I do love helping people but nursing wouldn’t be something I’d wanna do my entire life but it’s a starting point to becoming a physician one day
i'm a male nursing student. i have to fact the same question about ''why do you learn a nurse?'' or ''why don't you be a doctor'',that question sometime make my attitude about nursing career not good sometime, however, at least after watching your video make me want to go on my again.

As a person who was born with a neural tube defect, and hydrocephalus, I have spent a lot of time in the hospital. I have found that male nurses in general are gentler and kinder than women.
Well said bro and out of the heart. Thank you for this video. This video gives me extra courage when I start my higher nursing education next month. The stereotypes still prevail here in the Netherlands as well...
Really hope some peoples bigotry will die off. I get so angry when I hear old stereotypes, usually from the mouth of someone who lacks the intelligence to pass one science course, much less become a good nurse. In time it WILL be gone completely. Thanks for the video!
I have a degree in music education, and one of the guys that I went to school with is now a flight nurse. He works in the same town where my mother’s cousin lived. My mother‘s cousin was killed in a hunting accident, and I don’t know obviously, but it would be really neat to know that my friend might have been on that chopper. I have no issues with David having been a nurse. You guys rock.
Some male nurses might be gay if that's their preference. Best of all is all Nurses make a huge difference in alot of people's lives everyday. They make a lot of good money too I bet....

The "Why didn't you go to medical school?" comment was something that my sister had to deal with when she decided to go to pharmacy school. The thing is, she actually considered medical school at one point. She even shadowed physicians and she decided that she did not want to be one. Like you, my sister could have gone to medical school if she wanted to. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to be a physician, but still wanting to be a healthcare professional.
LMAO "Caitlin Jenner won women of the year but male nurses are still shocking people" great video man i gave up nursing but decided to go back this coming semester !
Josiah, I think you’re a most intelligent and sympathetic young man, and I have no doubt that you are well placed in your vocation. Thank you so much for your service. As I have no criticism of your purpose with this video, the substance of it, I shall address some criticism I have of your profession, irrespective of gender, in general. Nurses these days want and expect twelve hour shifts, presumably because you like the four days off. I think this is reckless and a possible danger to patients. I was in a hospital overnight only once so far, not counting birth and tonsils as a young child. I appreciate the vast responsibilities incumbent upon all medical professionals, physicians and nurses. It is a very stressful profession, more than enough so without having to fight fatigue which can affect mood and judgment grievously in any person. (People snap at others easily when tired; that's true for anyone.) I would not characterize myself as a “difficult patient.” I was pleasant and appreciative. But twice I got yelled at (not screaming mad, just snidely) by two nurses-one of whom was obviously very stressed-for things I did on those two occasions. I felt like saying: “Listen, I don’t think you understand our relative positions. I and my insurance company are paying fifty grand a day for me to be here. I am profit; you are overhead!” But I didn’t. I restrained myself out of consideration of this stress and responsibility you all feel. But it does irk me that medical professionals are the only people I know that act as if they are doing you a favor for taking your money (a great deal of it)! Compromise and accept four ten hour shifts a week. Three days off is sufficient. I don’t know why state nursing boards tolerate this dangerous practice. It’s as if patients don’t matter.
Been a nurse for 15 years. To believe all males would not be good at nursing makes about as much sense as believing all females would be good at nursing.
I’m just finishing my pre reqs for nursing school. Two kids at age 27, and my wife just started school for nursing as well. At the beginning I thought a male nurse but now my mind set is different. It’s like you said female cops fire fighters. We live in a different society and it should be equal. Even though it may seem like not.
Roberto Blanco the insane amount of stability and income opportunities you have in the career of nursing to provide for your family is often enough to get past stereotypes. The CEO at one of my hospitals was a nurse who went back and got an MBA, now making well over a million dollars a year. There’s no end to the possibilities. I wish you and your whole family the absolute best!
Josiah Shoon yeah It’s endless possibilities. I’m hopeful to get into icu so later I can do CRNA. I just want to do it more now because my grandpa passed away a month ago today from COVID and I wasn’t able to be there with him. I at least want to make those who are on their last days feel as comfortable as possible.
My man, I work at kids with cancer in the PICU but I started in ortho. I love my job and when anyone comes at me about the gender bias I just laugh cuz I feel like I have the best career in the world. I love being bedside with these kids. I give thorough, thoughtful, compassionate care and I know my gender doesn't get in the way of any of that. I agree with you about nursing being the best choice I've ever made. We out here ✊✊ Bro btw u def gotta work on an outro 😂I like what you're doing over here on the channel.
guidoth1 I'd say I've seen it, and although I didn't see him when he was brand new I work with him now and he's a role model to many. You come into nursing with a lot of life experience, a unique way to learn and an understanding of the working world. Personally I've never seen age as a barrier especially in those with positive attitudes. Keep me apprised. I'm sure you'll do well in whatever you choose.
Sounds good, Josiah. Thanks for the encouraging words. After 12+ plus years of working in a cubicle, I know for sure I'm meant to work in a setting where I'm engaging directly with people. I'm drawn to nursing; especially pediatrics because I have a heart for children. I'm just in a place where I want to make a wise decision. I will be shadowing a few male nurses, in different settings, in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully that helps me in the process, along with asking with asking questions of people like yourself, and researching the field. Exciting times! I just have one more question; what would you say are some traits that will help you be a successful nurse?
i'm a 42 year old man making a career change to nursing. i'm graduating from an ADN program tomorrow, and my first RN job is in an ICU. so glad i found josiah's videos! i've been an RN extern in this ICU for the last year so i know the people, but it's still going to be super scary when i walk in as a nurse. age has definitely never even come up; the ICU nurses are great and super supportive and treat each other like family.
love your vids and congrats on grad school!💯 Idk if this is too personal but what made you decide to move to PA after college? I'm currently a sophomore hoping to get into nursing school but I might have to go out of state
Truthfully I fell in love with the hospital I'm currently at. I externed there my first year of nursing school and it became my dream hospital, so best of luck to you and chase whatever dreams you have!
Well spoken fella. Sounds interesting, but I think it's a bit too late for me to enter this field. Currently 32 , a personal trainer in one of the beach cities of LA. I enjoy everything that's medical/health/fitness related, as well as helping others. . thought about this path, but needed more info to see what comes with it. .
There is definitely discrimination towards men. But it can be overcome. Biggest problem is there is no men in education or supervisory roles in nursing. So as a man, you will NEVER be making more than female nurses even with slightly more experience. Sure if you have been a nurse for 10 years and a female for 2. But if it’s close the female supervisor will never pay you more. I have seen big monetary bonuses given to female nurses for no reason that was explained. I have never seen a male get one. Other than on hire or retention which is equal.
Sabbath keeper? I grew up STRICT SDA, and there are nurses in the religion everywhere who keep Sabbath. In fact many feel that due to the story of Jesus healing the blind on Sabbath it’s ok to work healthcare and help the sick on Sabbath. Either way I’m sorry you were discouraged period. Although I’m no longer that religion, I fully understand how influential it can be. I hope you know it’s never too late to chase that dream no matter what age you may be. Best of luck.
No, I don't want to be a male nurse. I want to be an accountant. Mathematics was always my best subject. I was studying to be an accountant but thanks to Justin Trudeau I was transferred into nursing. Yeah, they just transferred men out of STEM programs into nursing. Female nursing students were transferred into STEM programs. It's a mess, students are taking the money they are suppose to be spending on text books and just going out partying.
I wish there were more men as nurses because we need strong guys to help with heavy patients. Also having more men as nurses reduces the drama and all the catiness than happens when there are only women, its crazy but its so true.
I know this may seem like an ignorant question, but is possible for me to pursue this endeavor even if I really struggle with Math and Science? I dont feel smart enough. My goal is to be a Pediatric Nurse. I love kids.
Michaelnolan1988 One of my favorite quotes of all time: “Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” My point is don’t let anything get in front of your passion, and if that’s to be a pediatric nurse I’m begging you to go for it! Let me be clear it’s not easy. I’m not saying it’s going to be easy and I can almost guarantee it will not be easy, BUT if it’s worth it? If you’re passionate about it? I highly encourage you to go for it. Math and science are often confused as being exclusive for “smart people” but a lot of the time all that a person needs is repetition in them. Meaning practice. You just have to do them over and over again and that often helps people succeed in those subjects. So please. Chase your passion, kids need someone like you.
"Don't go into nursing if you can't get into medicine" love this sentiment so much

No. you are a nurse that is a man, not a male nurse. There is no degree or license in male nursing.
I have had female nurses tell me that they like having male nurses on shift because they act as "mood stabilizers".
I love the fact more guys are getting into nursing. There's not as much drama with them lol.
SubversiveGalacticUnicorn I guess there's a lot of homosexuals in the world
I feel you've missed the point and in fact you've lambasted your own gender as being dramatic.

Roberto Blanco absolutely awesome bro. I wish you the best of luck I’m sure you’ll be great!
So true, in 2020 I still agree with what you have to say lol
My man, I work at kids with cancer in the PICU but I started in ortho. I love my job and when anyone comes at me about the gender bias I just laugh cuz I feel like I have the best career in the world. I love being bedside with these kids. I give thorough, thoughtful, compassionate care and I know my gender doesn't get in the way of any of that. I agree with you about nursing being the best choice I've ever made. We out here ✊✊ Bro btw u def gotta work on an outro 😂I like what you're doing over here on the channel.
Josiah, what are your thoughts about a 42 year old man making a career change to nursing? Is age a barrier in your opinion?
guidoth1 I'd say I've seen it, and although I didn't see him when he was brand new I work with him now and he's a role model to many.
I just have one more question; what would you say are some traits that will help you be a successful nurse?
guidoth1 Go for it and I thoroughly support your endeavor.
i'm a 42 year old man making a career change to nursing. i'm graduating from an ADN program tomorrow, and my first RN job is in an ICU. so glad i found josiah's videos! i've been an RN extern in this ICU for the last year so i know the people, but it's still going to be super scary when i walk in as a nurse. age has definitely never even come up; the ICU nurses are great and super supportive and treat each other like family.
love your vids and congrats on grad school!💯 Idk if this is too personal but what made you decide to move to PA after college? I'm currently a sophomore hoping to get into nursing school but I might have to go out of state
Truthfully I fell in love with the hospital I'm currently at. I externed there my first year of nursing school and it became my dream hospital, so best of luck to you and chase whatever dreams you have!
I like nurse! ❤️🌹🌷❤️🙏🌷😍
I’m in my prerequisites now for Nursing 😁
Well spoken fella.
Sounds interesting, but I think it's a bit too late for me to enter this field. Currently 32 , a personal trainer in one of the beach cities of LA.
I enjoy everything that's medical/health/fitness related, as well as helping others. . thought about this path, but needed more info to see what comes with it. .
Never too late, I'm 32 currently in first level LPN/LVN school.
I may stop there or maybe as time goes on I'll try for my MSN Nurse Practitioner.
i am an LPN nursing student currently and this for this video... tho it said male nurses but i took a lot from the message.
I'm a NICU male nurse and nothing wrong with it in my country
I got discouraged from being a nurse because I'm a Sabbath keeper. I was 18 and naive. I became a teacher and was discriminated in that field too.
Shoutout from male nusring student frm india
No, I don't want to be a male nurse. I want to be an accountant. Mathematics was always my best subject. I was studying to be an accountant but thanks to Justin Trudeau I was transferred into nursing. Yeah, they just transferred men out of STEM programs into nursing. Female nursing students were transferred into STEM programs. It's a mess, students are taking the money they are suppose to be spending on text books and just going out partying.
Im a 2nd year Nurse Student in India...🤗
I’m in my prerequisites now 😁
I wish there were more men as nurses because we need strong guys to help with heavy patients. Also having more men as nurses reduces the drama and all the catiness than happens when there are only women, its crazy but its so true.

Men used to dominate nursing
I mean ? I trust male nurses more then women nurses , it’s 2021
