Jeff Hanneman was by far a guitar genius. His style was very awesome and he was also a very talented writer of lyrics and guitar riffs as well. He will be missed dearly R.I.P. Jeff your music will live in my heart until it's my time to go!
In 82" I lived in San Diego (age 14) slayer, exodus, voivod, ratpack, Christ on parade, D.R.I, helix, seen all of them at Adams Avenue Theatre. Jeff ,Dave, Tom, Kerry, all walking around drinking Heineken, smoking weed, met a of them before they even made Show no Mercy,.

Hanneman was the lyrical genius behind Slayer's best known songs. He was a genius who was often overshadowed by Kerry King. But being he was the quiet type, he liked it that way. But there is no mistaking his death left a void.
Le foto di quando era bambino sono eccezionali! Aveva già l'atteggiamento e la visione di quello che sarebbe diventato qualche anno più tardi... Una grandissima icona dell' Heavy Metal!
Met him in Poperinge 1985. We were both two young guys at the age of 20, loving beer and metal. That it is, why his death is going so close to me. Man, I´m still mourning, but you still reign.
I met Jeff at a Record store signing for Divine Intervention in 1994. He was really nice, and the whole band signed the back of the neck of an old B.C. Rich Warlock guitar I had.
Been a fan since early '86 when, in the military, a friend lent me the Haunting the Chapel ep. He thought I wouldn't like it. It changed my taste in music forever. Being deployed made it impossible to catch them live. Otherwise I would have seen them first on the Reign tour. Missed the SoH tour by only a month. Deployed on Westpac again. Heard it was epic opening for the mighty Priest and the seat cushion incident. Finally got to see them live at the L.A. Sports Arena for the Seasons tour. R.I.P. You will live on forever in our hearts, and our corpses. Thank you Jeff Hanneman!
I've been a slayer fan since 1985. When I first heard Hell Awaits it kinda freaked me out. I had never heard such brutal metal in my life, but I totally got it. Jeff had a passion for punk and metal and when you saw him onstage he ruled. I wish I had gotten to know him, we both have a passion for military history including the Nazi side of WW2. , and some of his songs and memorabilia were controversial but I never thought he was a racist, just talking about the evil that humanity can become. Reign in peace Jeff!!!!!!!
thanks for the reply Ariel. It's nice to know there are people out there who appreciate the talents and gifts of people instead of being criticized for their thoughts and/or beliefs. If God exists you know he's a slayer fan!!!!!!! Personally I think that Satan is a fan of country music. haha
@@michaelmull5520 Hilarious how the media never go deep enough into facts of the matter calling them nazi sympathisers considering half the band were South and Central American rooted, typical media bullshit, Slayer write of all the evils, ills and atrocities of the human race they have stated clearly they make music using of the horrible shit in the world and the fantasy material was shock and horror context and the real subject material is and never was for one second condoning it, Slayer were also one of the huge influences leading to extreme forms of metal & punk (Death Metal, Death Grind, Grindcore, Powerviolence etc.) loads of artists also stated this in interviews, in fact I'd be extremely surprised if at any extreme metal to heavy metal gig you did not see at least one Slayer shirt, cap or wrist band - Slayer+Pap-Smear4Life!
I'd been a Slayer fan for a while and knew from their records that there was a genuinely special combination of musicians and ideas involved in that band, but I didn't understand _how_ special until I saw them live. Clash of the Titans tour, October 1990. What was, most people with a taste for metal agreed, the coolest line up we had ever seen. Suicidal Tendencies at the top of their game supplied the crossover grooves. Testament, touring on their excellent Practice What You Preach album were also at the peak of their powers and clearly having the time of their lives playing to such big crowds. Even Co headliners Megadeth, finally having the sort of success that Mustaine though was his due with the classic Rust in Peace, were as animated as I've ever seen them and turned in musically flawless performances. It was a damn good night... But Slayer....God - fucking _-damn!_ The phrase "they blew the competition off the stage" gets chucked around a lot and I've no doubt people used it on this occasion too, but it was _totally_ fucking inadequate. The intensity level simply shot up and off the scale once they started playing. Face rippingly, bowel looseningly heavy, tight as a vicar's dirtbox and, if anything, even _more_ intense than Rick Rubin's outstanding recordings of the band. They were touring Seasons in the Abyss at the time, giving Hanneman the opportunity to spread his wings beyond the atonal soloing that had been Slayer's signature weakness up until South of Heaven. They absolutely _killed,_ leaving the other bands on the bill (who had by no means played lacklustre shows) choking on their dust. It was a night I will never forget. It's seared onto my brain. When Lombardo went, things weren't the same, He has a very particular playing style that actually has a lot more to do with jazz than metal and his absence was an issue for long time fans. But when the world lost Jeff Hanneman, shit, it was _never_ going to be right again. Much as I would have loved to go see Slayer one more time on this last tour, I couldn't bring myself to do it. Jeff and Dave's playing was half of that band's personality. No disrespect intended to the guys playing now, they're both outstanding musicians, but it's just not Slayer to me. I almost envy the kids young enough not to have seen them in their prime, back in the late 80s/ early 90s, because having seen them then myself has spoiled this new incarnation for me. I will miss Slayer when they're gone. One of the most important bands in my life's soundtrack, and no mistake. Edit: Yeah, having just watched the two versions of the solo during the cook off at the end of South Of Heaven, I'm sure I made the right choice. Nobody plays those songs like Hanneman. Again, not slagging off the skills of Gary Holt, he rocks. It just isn't Slayer.
Pittsburgh, pa... coca-cola amphitheater... Alice on chains opened. Anthrax, SSSSLLLLAAAAAAAYYYYEEEERRRRRR, and closing was Megadeth. Best EVER show I've ever seen , that was back in 1990/91. Girlfriend was pregnant with my first son, she went too. He's 26 now, does NOT realize what he missed at that show!
Jeff Hanneman wrote the soundtrack of my youth along with the rest of Slayer. As I type this I'm mourning him, Lemmy, Bowie and so many of the musical talents that I love and wish that life and time wasn't so cruel. Vale Jeff and all those who stepped above the mundane to give us great music.
Thank you so much for posting this. Great video hearing about Jeff's life and interests and insights into his guitar playing. Grew up with this in the early 80's....legendary times. We lost a true master musician in 2013. I am 48 years young and still love Slayer and all things metal!! Raising it up high from Texas!! \m/

thanks for the reply Ariel.
I was lucky enough to see slayer in the late 90's at what was the Electric Ballroom in Knoxville TN....
South of Heaven was the first cassette tape I ever owned! So many great memories of Slayer! Rip er up on the other side Brother Jeff!
RIP. I have seen Slayer in their original line up only twice. We will all miss you JH!
But Slayer....God - fucking _-damn!_
The phrase "they blew the competition off the stage" gets chucked around a lot and I've no doubt people used it on this occasion too, but it was _totally_ fucking inadequate.
Anthrax,
SSSSLLLLAAAAAAAYYYYEEEERRRRRR, and closing was
Megadeth.
7 years ago today, RIP Jeff.
My favourite guitarist.
