The EXTRAORDINARY Meeting Between Alexander the Great and Diogenes the Cynic

  • The famous encounter between the conqueror Alexander the Great and the philosopher Diogenes in Corinth contrasted their power and wisdom. When Alexander asked if he could do anything for the philosopher, Diogenes replied: "Yes, step aside, you're blocking the sun." Admiring Diogenes' indifference to power, Alexander said: "If I weren't Alexander, I would like to be Diogenes."

Alexander: "Hello, I am Alexander, heir to the crown of Macedonia, war hero and general... Many people say Im pretty Great.
If you'd like anything, I would be happy to give it to you."
Diogenes: "Cool story bro, could you step aside? You're blocking my sunlight".

@@BigChungus-ly8ym He was already being hailed as a great warrior when he met Diogenes, but you are right in that he had not yet accomplished most of what he will later be known for. But I don't think it would have mattered in the least. Diogenes was not impressed by great men or great accomplishments. He believed that pursuing any course other than that of what he called "a natural life" was simply foolish and a waste of time. To Diogenes, Alexander's conquest of Persia would have simply been evidence of the foolishness of "great men."

*That* would likely alone get Alexander to admire this guy's courage and personal standards; to tell him to his face that all his monarch of the time is is simply another guy- that's also ironically the *safest* approach Alexander the Great could do today, or in any situation where the primary mindset is one of revolutionaries: we won't care at all who he is if he's not interpretted by us as a hubristic threat- he's then a prospective business partner; one you avoid if you have to, and deal with respectfully if you have to- simply another guy on the street, but one therefore you categorically do NOT move against, if only for that very same principle!

@@pagodebregaeforro2803 Alexander was not an adherent of the Cynic philosophical school. That's pretty obvious for a number of reasons. However, based on Alexander's love of Dionysos, I believe He admired Diogenes' outspokenness and his countercultural lifestyle. Diogenes willingly rejected the niceties of civilization to make a philosophical point regarding how little one truly needs to survive in life. He was a believer in the idea that humanity has overcomplicated life and we ought to return to more natural ways of living. Alexander probably respected Diogenes' commitment to his philosophy and his wit. I think He truly meant what He said that if He weren't Alexander He would want to be someone like Diogenes.

This meeting between Diogenes and Alexander had a lot more interesting things to it than what mentioned in the video.
Diogenes was trying to tell Alexander to be a good King for his people.
Knowing that Alexander was seeking glory and will try to conquer the Persian empire he told him the most interesting thing:
"Even if you pass by the Pillars of Heracles (at Gibraltar) and cross over the whole Ocean (he means Atlantic ocean) and conquer that CONTINENT after it that is bigger than Asia (he means AMERICA!!) you will still be nothing if you are not food to your people."
    Diogenes *KNEW ABOUT AMERICA* .
And that means Alexander knew ir too because he never asked him about it.

''me'', so aposkoteson me in Greek legit means smth like ''get the darkness away from me''. Claiming that in Greek doesnt have any meaning probably means that you claim yourself to know Greek, but do you really? You seem to only know Albanian, a kinda old (late medieval times) language that yet is just mixed, such language didnt even exist in the times of Alexander.
