One in three school children report experiencing racism |The Drum

  • We know from international research that the stress of being targeted by racism as a child or a teen, or even seeing it happen to someone else, can affect you later in life.
    A new report, the first of its kind, that surveys about 4600 students from New South Wales and Victorian schools shows just what's happening in Australian playgrounds.
    Researchers from the Australian National University and Western Sydney University found that 40 per cent of students in years five to nine from non-Anglo or European backgrounds reported being the victim of racial discrimination by their peers.
    We know already from the stories of Indigenous Australians and people of colour, most recently in a special version of The Drum devoted to the topic, that racism happened to them at school.
    Why does it take a study like this for it to be taken seriously?
