I enjoy seeing actors whose careers began before I was born. I recognize them all from seeing them in films as I grew up in the fifties through the sixties. This particular movie was very enjoyable. The humor mixed with the serious parts of the story is missing from today's films. Reality is seldom as limited in focus as today's scripts. Thanks for collecting these films.

I like that these old pictures are only an hour or so long. That's about as long as people were afforded a break from the great depression, war, etc., back in the day. Or maybe their attention span was only good for that long according to the movie producers. Escape for an hour.

17:00 when he gets the knife in the back-I think this is the first time that I have seen a movie made before 1970 where a woman does NOT scream when she sees someone murdered, much less her father even though there was no love lost. Merely raises her hand, with a hanky, dramatically to her mouth as though she were stifling a scream. Brave, brave woman. LOL 23:00, standing over the corpse, the BF says to the butler, "Esteban, get me some jelly, talcum powder and a plate." Uhm, WTH? Watch to find out. Great film-made me a subscriber!

A couple of viewers mentioned the main title as being re-used from BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. Actually, this is the ORIGINAL main title as composed by Franz Waxman for BRIDE. The "Blind Man's Hut on Fire" portion of the main title was deleted by the music editor (and music from the miniatures sequence inserted) for the final release print of BRIDE. Great to hear Waxman's original complete composition. Also, this is a very nice original print. THE BLACK DOLL was duped and there are a lot of poor 16's around. I have an original and it's nice to see another one! Thanks so much for uploading!

I was probably 8 or so... all my sibs younger and we LOVED this movie; we watched it every time it played AND, yes... Edgar was one of favs... we would go about imitating him. ALSO, as young as we were... we appreciated and recognized Waxman's music. We loved that too. Thanks for the info. (SRM818, thank you for the upload).

What an entertaining who-dun-it! I will agree with several other commenters about the bumbling sheriff portrayal being over played. But this movie was made in the middle of the Great Depression and I can only imagine that this "comedic relief" was a nice change for a lot of people. I am reminded of the great Charlie Chan movies with the wonderful Mantan Moreland playing the chauffeur and the "comedic relief". I wasn't raised in those years; I was born later in 1952 so I don't have the personal Life context of these movies. For me, a little bit of Mantan's comedic relief was plenty for me. Society was different back then than now; we are oh so sophisticated and 'educated' today...LOL..!! I still very much prefer the movies from the 50's and earlier from nearly everything that degenerate holly-wierd spews out today...uugghh..!!

It seems to be a convention for "B" mysteries of the era let their comics play too broadly. Edgar was an old pro capable of more subtle comedy with his "slow burn." Donald Woods turned in a good performance. Max Steiner wasn't given credit for the musical motifs in the score lifted from Bride of Frankenstein. But I enjoyed watching. Thank you for putting this on the Web. There are't enough old movies.

    SPOILERS
Sorry, but just trying to get all this straight in my head...
    Nephew Rex needed $200--red herring
Dr. Giddings snuck the doll onto the desk initially how? Hiding in the small room upstairs and using the back stairs to the kitchen.
The doctor knew about the doll because he first met the Roods in Mexico when Rood got an exotic disease.
Dr. Giddings chokes Mallison because he tried too hard to throw suspicion on Mallison, using a knife from his room. Mallison caught him and so had to be killed.
The doctor then killed Nelson Rood because he had the hots for Rood's sis.
He threw the monkey onto the dead body from the second floor and then went out the front door unobserved by using the back stairs to the kitchen, leaving the front door ajar. He runs ahead of daughter Marian Rood so he can attack her in the dark.
The doctor cut the wires to buy time so he could get back home in time to take nephew Rex Leland's phone call for a doctor.
    Rex's forged check--red herring
Why kill Marian? To get a larger share of the estate.
In the kitchen, Dr. Giddings insisted the significance of the doll was known by everyone, that it led Mood to the mine. This seems a mistake, since it undermined the distraction the doll provided, and the narrative that Barrows was exacting revenge or Mallison was after a larger share of the partnership.

"There's a touch of magic, to your cooking. And, there's not an onion, in it". But, they're eating cake😣, @0:08:47. Why bring that, up?? Supposedly, a serious mystery movie, but the comic relief just walked up, onto the porch, @0:24:00😁 (good ol' Edgar). Realistically, Edgar couldn't solve, who ate the banana, with a monkey in the room.

All the information about Wallis Simpson being a hermaphrodite has been removed from the internet; Wallis apparently was the star act in a brothel before meeting Eddie.

Yes, that`s him. Edgar Kennedy started his career as one of the Keystone Kops and was most noted for his "slow burn" when he was frustrated.

Enjoyable film despite the preposterous storyline, so-so acting, and poor attempts at comedy. There was just something about it.....

there should not be any comedy attempts in a crime story.
      edit the sheriff out.
