It's 6 years later, but I can now say this, thank you Derek for reviewing this. You are the reason I have both this and EDF 2025 on my XB1. Your passion and energy for this series made me want to try them out, and now I always find myself coming back to them when I need to destress with some mindless fun and feel like a kid again.
Derek you need to make more of these man. Love your need videos, quickies and super nerdy. I know you like your music project and marathon live plays but this is where you rock buddy. Bring these videos back!!!

How many times must I say it? "Bother us with a story"? Story in a video game was never a chore, it gives us a reason to do what the game wants us to do, plus, it immerses us more into the universe.
Normally, I'd agree with you. This game however really doesn't need one. The story is that you need to go out and kill shit. That is it, and it works for EDF 2017.
I honestly think he has a point with this one, though he could seriously word that statement better. He's just giving praise to a game that knows what the hell it is, that a game like this knows it's just a hilariously dumb and random alien invasion for the hell of it. The fact that he compares it to Titanfall just sells that point, since Titanfall has such a horrendously pretentious story that does nothing to hide the fact that there IS no story, just something that is begging to be taken seriously, but comes off as the tough guy in the room that everyone shrugs off. Meanwhile, EDF is that one wacky guy that you know is acting entirely genuine, not doing what he does for attention but that's who he is and he's not ashamed of it.
If you say so. I guess I just never play games that don't give me a reason, unless it's a puzzle game like Tetris and Dr. Mario. Trust me, I don't expect a story out of Tetris xD
PikaLink91 A story is only there to serve the gameplay. Many great game developers (and players too) have lost sight of that. Somewhere in the 90s, the priority of story and script for console games suddenly grew (spawning embarrassing failures in character development and dialogue, like FFX) but as games become more and more cinematic, which games have you played with a truly interesting story, to the same degree as a classic film?
Every game technically has a story whether it's fleshed out or not. In Mario, you're rescuing the princess, Castlevania you're killing Dracula. Hell you could argue Pong has a story, that you're playing ping pong. And while some games benefit from having a deep background and fleshed out mythos, some games don't need any more than what you see to motivate you. Giant aliens are fucking stuff up! Shoot them with your big guns!
Oh sweet, it's so nice to see you doing regular HVGN episdoes again. I missed watching your shorter 10 - 20 minute videos as I don't have the time to watch the 1 - 2 hour ones.
A new HVGN review!? YEAAAAAH!!! And seeing footage of this game made me remember that I've actually played this before though not in a very long time. I'm not sure if I'd enjoy it now, but I definitely enjoyed it back then. Also, the whole "insect alien invasion" thing reminds me of Body Harvest for the N64.
Would you ever consider reviewing Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii, and Star Ocean: The Last Hope International for PS3 sometime in the future??? Last Hope International especially, considering it's easily one of the most underrated RPG's on the PS3.

Just roll with it. Some of the launch titles and early games for 360 are almost 10 years old (and Oblivion was even going to be a launch title before it was delayed). If Oblivion potato-faces don't make you think "retro", I don't know what does.

That being said; Depression Quest and Gone Home are terrible examples of "Pushing the medium". Their just games that went with the whole "how obtuse can we make a game and still get praised as a art for awards" sorta deal. But I can't be mad at you mate! I love you. Just don't get roped in the "anti-gamer gate crusade". Please. For me.
After you do earth defense force, do you think you could review guardian heroes for Saturn? and if you don't have it, you can download it on the Xbox 360.

Always liked this game. It's a real Co-op game, and a couch-play one at that. Just sit down with your best friend, pop this gem of mindless destruction in and there go hours of fun. Sadly, most people you show the game to are more concerned about their halos and calls to duty nowadays. So it's great to see someone else likes the EDF! Btw. Is the new one, 2025 any good? I was a little disappointed with insect armageddon, since it was kinda short compared to 2017.

My brother never played video games anymore... He came round one afternoon and we grabbed a beer and I popped in EDF2017 and we played it until late into the night... that's how addictive and enjoyable this game is

I just got into EDF last year, when it was on sale and I could get it for my dumpster dive found X360. Loved it! This was a fun look back on it, thanks for doing this back in the day! I personally certainly don't consider it necessary to finish through all the difficulties - one playthrough on Normal is enough for me thank you! At least on solo. But I might try out a remake later!
Each armor pickup is equivalent to an addition of 1.2 to maximum stamina, if the mission is completed successfully. Though obviously variable with the five difficulties, the weapon pickup will be any of 163 weapons obtainable after a successful mission. The two reasons that only 163 are obtainable via the weapon pickup are that (1) every time a new game is begun, the player already has access to three weapons, and (2) there are five weapons obtainable by completing the game on the respective difficulties. The small health pickup will restore 15% of the current maximum stamina during battle. The large health pickup will restore 30% of the current maximum stamina during combat. Starting weapons are the AF14 (Assault Rifle), Stingray M1 (Rocket Launcher), and MG10 (Hand Grenade). The five weapons obtainable by completing the game entirely, depending on difficulty, are the Zero Laser Rifle (Sniper Rifle, Easy), the ZE Launcher (Sentry Turret, Normal), the Y20 Impulse (Claymore, Hard), the PX50 Bound Shot (Bound Gun, Hardest), and the Genocide Gun (Rocket Launcher, Inferno). The total number of weapons in "Earth Defense Force 2017" amounts to 171, despite the player's having to complete the equivalent of a minimum of 53 * 5 = 265 missions (fifty-three missions on five difficulties). Man, I loved this game and all of its cheesiness when it first came out. As you mentioned, what the game lacks in graphics and dialogue, it more than makes up for in fun gameplay and shooting giant bugs and robots never gets old. Can't wait to see your review on the later EDF games.
If I weren't completely terrible at Shooters, I think I'd pick this up in a heartbeat; the cheesy dialogue and focus on gameplay look just phenomenal. Too often these days do games focus on telling their story, and while admittedly, it is sometimes a great story, games should be games first and foremost. Show me a game with great graphics, excellent sound, a brilliant story, and terrible gameplay, and I'll show you a great movie at best. By the bye, I loved the Clash at Demonhead reference at the end!
Despite it's issues, this game is still in my top 5 games of all time (so far). The lack of auto-saving never bothered me. I save like a maniac anyway. The only major problem I had was that sometimes, in the underground levels, an ant would spawn in a wall making me restart the stage. So glad they added online for EDF 2025, even if starting a stage takes longer then it would locally. Also, singing soldiers.
