  • It used to be that internal drives were the only real solution for quick access to your gaming library. However, wth the advent of USB 3.1 Gen 2 we got to wondering: is it FINALLY possible to put your games on a portable drive without sacrificing load times, latency and responsiveness?

One thing to keep in mind though is that flash drives or external SSDs usualy use cheap TLC which has poor endurance since they are meant to just dump files and then mostly read from it. If you only install the games and run them, then it should be fine, but if you are constantly updating the files because of game updates and such, then those excessive writes will wear the drive faster than it was designed for. Not a huge problem but still something to consider.

Hey guys, I've been searching for external SSD or HDD for gaming. Each time I do this kind of research, this video always comes up first. Even if it's 3 years old, I think it's still relevant. I suppose asking for those links in the descriptions you talked about would be unreasonnable because everthing must be out of date. I was also searching for external HDD becasue they are cheaper, but I'm reluctent because this days I don't see their RPM speed anywhere... So I am more inclined to go for SSD. Do you think your going to remake another video like in the futur?

You can buy a Segate Baracuda HDD(I hope I didn't get that name wrong) since it provides a awesome value for the price and to be honest you don't really need to spend almost double the money on a ssd just to load a game 10/20 sec faster. I use a WD HDD 1TB for a boot drive and keep it below 50% full to it is faster. I use a 3 TB HDD Barricuda which test much faster (user bench mark) for my games. According to your tests an SSD will not help enough to spend extra money.
I already had the 1TB WD in the rig and added the 3 TB which is why the OS is on the WD.

Cat 17091 2.5" drives don't usually need the extra power adapter. USB should supply more then enough amps. But a 3.5" drive would need a power adapter.

    • @trop1cal5k1ttles

That what i was thinking of doing. You can do it for relatively low budget. A basic 2.5 enclosure with UASP support goes for as little as 10$ and i even saw a used 1tb ssd for about 170$. All together with shipping would fall under 200$. Pretty good deal if you ask me. Or if you want even faster speeds you can go all out and use a 1tb m.2 with external enclosure for under 400$

If it fills buy another and just swap to the one you need. I think it should work just fine. Be almost like playing on cartridges again lol.

These are unexpected results considering usb 3.0 is 5 GB/s way higher than any ssd drive, the ssds are only 500MB/s and the hdds are a measly 100~MB/s I thought it would be equally slow across the board with the ssds and the hdd would be left completely in the dust. But the sdd load is tolerable and the hdd still kept up pretty close and only struggled with Doom. I guess its on a per game basis, and I guess it would just be a game of testing which ones load fine from a external hdd. And decide from there if the load times are outrageous on external then just leave that game to internal storage, but if it loads at a good speed then keep it on the external drive. If the games are perfectly playable from external anything, then it really doesnt matter what external drive is used. This is great news. Also you didnt mention what kind of storage was in the test system. Im assuming an ssd? I think having an internal hdd system would slow the loading times as well.

Why not just install in the internal hard drive? Why game with external drive?

I just bought a Samsung T5 SSD. I love in a really weird spot that no internet provider will run to but my cellphone service is fantastic so I use hotspot for gaming and all mh internet needs, problem is this comes with data caps, and not very high ones. Now I can download games at work or a friends house and simply play them off my T5 on my home computer without eating my limited high speed.

Why would you not install Steam, Origin, etc. on the C:/ drive and have just the games on the D:/ drive? It'll load faster if you have Steam on the boot drive, then point Steam to the other drive to read the games.

I was thinking about buying another SSD for my laptop, but I guess this is it. I work with 3D modelling and texturing and that needs a fast drive, and this seems a lot better than using an external drive or buying another SSD that will run out of space very quickly.

In canada the 1tb wd passport goes for ~$70 whereas a 1tb internal ssd costs upwards of $300. Would it make sense to just buy this external one and use it for my main drive instead since the speeds are so similar? Why or why not?
EDIT: so I was looking at the price for the usb 3.0 version but would it still make sense?

While I can see the appeal to storing all of the games on the external SSD, The larger issue that isn't being address is how well will the average receiving computer handle it? Most modern games require a pretty powerful GPU, this is just covering the hard drive. I'm curious to see how it handles on an average computer that one might be at.

What's the point of it being an external ssd. Might as well enable hot plug sata and have a sata lead hanging out of your computer

  • @Jarymut
    @Jarymut 7 ปีที่แล้ว

There are still hot-swappable 3.5 or 2.5'' bays for 5.25'' slots. But "modern" cases does not have that...
I can also suggest Linux, NFS and gigabit (or faster) ethernet, but I don't care about EA's or Ubisoft's titles, you do.
And, like other have pointed out, you can simply buy GOOD usb3 enclosure and use ssd. It would be bigger than that WD drive, but much, much cheaper.

Doesn’t loading the games on the same system using different drives cause some of the games files to be left in the cache giving you “increased” performance just based how how many times you loaded them? Did you run each test multiple times? Did you do a system restart in between switching drives?

I have a new question: I have played the Fallout 76 B.E.T.A., which was fantastic, but with the recent patch of 30 GB the game won't fit on my internal SSD and slotting in an extra is out of the question (the MSI GS65 Stealth has the motherboard fixed upside down). Do you think I can install and run the game on my regular external HDD (Silicon Power USB 3.0 with 2 TB) or will I need a speedy external SSD? Thank you for this video!

So how does an HDD compare to an SSD? I'm guessing it's a better option, but it's over 4 times the price per GB. I'll probably still jump for the SSD, but I'm just a bit curious as to why.
