Amazing Song!! I only knew Marcy Playground from "sex and candy". I just figuring they were a one hit wonder so why bother to listen to their other stuff, BIG MISTAKE! I just today started listening to their other stuff and what the HELL took me so long!!! They are awesome. I have yet to hear a bad song.
I am going down the long lonesome road to Memphis And I have come from the valley of the damned to Memphis My love has gone with the devil to the well of poison But I declare I drink my fill from that well of poison The lord's gonna save my soul Somewhere in the hills of Memphis And the lord's gonna rest my bones Somewhere in the hills of Memphis
The natural evolution of music is fueled by creativity. If creativity stayed stagnant, we would not have the beautiful music we have today. Marcy Playground is real, they write/produce/perform their own original music and that is commendable! The "sell-out" bands/stars/american idol winners/etc don't have much creative input. They're told what/how to perform and do not write the music! They're hauled into the studio and digitalized. I think that is the definition of selling out.
Always loved this song from the Sex and Candy single. I spent hours and hours playing it over and over until I perfected it! I still dig it out at the odd open mic, to try and spread the Marcy love in the UK
Yep. It was on "Sex and Candy" along with "Angel of the Forever Sleep," which was also featured in some movie. John's wife liked "Memphis" and encouraged him to rerecord it for the new record.
Holy shit! THIS is the same guy who sang sex and candy? Amazing progression, awesome post grunge stuff in the 90s to awesome folk music in 2009. If I didn’t know any better I’d say you were bullshittin me about this being Marcy playground related. Incredibly beautiful
I haven’t heard anything more evocative of such visceral beauty than this magical composition in a very long time. You are incredibly gifted, sir. Thank you. You see, that “well of poison” represents the years of chemo I’ve taken in order to hear and see all the beauty just a bit longer. ❤
Lyrics I am going down the long lonesome road to Memphis And I have come from the valley of the damned to Memphis My love has gone with the devil to the well of poison But I declare I drink my fill from that well of poison The lord's gonna save my soul Somewhere in the hills of Memphis And the lord's gonna rest my bones Somewhere in the hills of Memphis
The original recording of this song was on their sex and candy single B-side. I remember very well cuz I bought the single when it came out. Such an amazing song. Should have been on the record.
I'll admit, I became interested in MP when sex and candy blew up back in the 90s.. But I stuck with them when most others shrugged them off as one hit wonders - which is unfortunate in a way - but also gives more freedom, perspective, and different experiences for the band and their loyal fans. They would be totally different both as artists and people if they stayed huge, and became something like.. say.. another U2. That said, they are one of my favorite bands still today
I bought their first cd when it came out for Sex and Candy didn't listen much to the other tracks and just a couple weeks a go I Played that song again and the rest of their other CDs now I love their music sing along with this music will make u happy. It does me.
This sounds like it was played at Woodstock in 1969. Brilliant. Can't believe this is from the 1990s. It seriously sounds like 1969 guys. I'm freaking out.
We Reap what we Sow, and we'll never be able to come up with a "work around" for that. There are many wells from which to sip, and the fact is, there is a little poison in all of them. Whatever road you're on...remember that they are all mostly lonely, and this all may seem sad, but in the end it isn't, because "all" roads lead to "home" and that's where your heart "is"
LaughingDeath I thought the footage was beautiful, it didn't make Memphis feel like some trashy city at all. Every city has their rougher ends of town, their older neighborhoods, run down and real; those are usually the most interesting places. Also a good homage to good music never hurt anyone. It felt like a modern singer giving it a respectful treatment; he didn't overindulge or make it "ironic". It was haunting and made me want to visit.
the blue leader I cant stand sex and candy, in the same sense that I can't stand no rain by blind melon. Wish people knew the greatness of these two bands, not their one mediocre hit song.
this song is great i love that fingerstyle .what name of this genre of music he play? someting like dark contry folk..? I'm from Algeria and I only know Memphis from Chuck Berry's song "Memphis Tennessee" and the Elvis Prestey's Mithic city ...
@LaughingDeath That's the thing about perspective. Everyone's is different. Experiencing different areas of the same city can change such perspective to a surprising degree. And insulting the lyrics? really? Consider and imagine for a moment "the long and lonesome road" that Marcy Playground has walked. Take the type of group they are and try to fit them in with the rest of today's sellouts, digitally rendered voices, soulless supermodel pop singer trash, and get back to me on how easy it is.
One of the most criminally underrated songs of all time. Beautiful and haunting tune.
One of the most "criminally underrated" BANDS of all time.. sex and candy is all that most ppl know of them, and you're 100% right, it's criminal..
future generations will hold a place for Marcy Playground in the highest step, with the classics, just as us fans already do
Mauricio Garza Livas I would be part of those generations
I discovered them hours ago. At 40, perhaps not a 'new generation'.
I’m 20 years old, I’ve been listening to them since I was four, I’m part of that generation and I hold them above many if not all
They truly married the creme de la creme of their contemporaries and those of the past.
28 years old still love them

Marcy Playground very underrated

I also got this song from the single. Unexpected and completely blown away.
New here (and to this artist) and I can say I've replayed this song already more than 20 times (and counting). So good!
i listen to everyday or almost, since 3 weeks
Yep. It was on "Sex and Candy" along with "Angel of the Forever Sleep," which was also featured in some movie. John's wife liked "Memphis" and encouraged him to rerecord it for the new record.
This is what it sounds like when you begin to reclaim peace and joy. This is the first song in the soundtrack of "on the right track".
I’m in this process right now. So poignant:)
I love this song being from Memphis and all. My ONLY issue is there are no hills in Memphis.
John, you wait much too long between records to write new stuff. I love your music.

brilliant song... another I love is 'angel of forever sleep'... for my pets... bless them all... amen.
Perfect mixture of an excellent tune and 8mm filming! Love this.
Love!!! Just can’t get enough. What a supreme talent.

Huge fan! Please don't ever stop making wonderful fantastical music 💯💯💯
The sounds of a dying sound. Brilliant and profound.

Been playing this song on guitar for over a year now and still cant play it as well as Woz.
On the road to Memphis and thought of this song
Likely one of my top 10 vocalists of all-time.
The original recording of this song was on their sex and candy single B-side. I remember very well cuz I bought the single when it came out. Such an amazing song. Should have been on the record.
This song is healing.

That travis picking is awesome.

Great video! I know this is from the new album, but wasn't "Memphis" released as a b-side on one of the self-titled albums singles? Great song!!
this song is great i love that fingerstyle .what name of this genre of music he play? someting like dark contry folk..?
I'm from Algeria and I only know Memphis from Chuck Berry's song "Memphis Tennessee" and the Elvis Prestey's Mithic city ...
i forget.. mythical city of studio recording. blues soul and rock.. am so sorry
was this actually shot n memphis?
@mandaryan Yes, it was.
perfectly said
nice
@mandaryan I know, they don't get enough respect. Maybe it is better that way. :)
Love this song but I live in East Memphis and it is flat as could be next to the MS River. There are no hills.
I am I the only one hearing Tom Petty influences in this? The guitar reminds me of Mudcrutch's Shady Grove.
No dislikes, FUCK YEAH.
my daily cure
Reminds me a bit of some of Neil Young's music.
STILL NONE!!! Hurray!
They would've been great for mtv unplugged
Hard to believe it was shot in super 8.
CN rail FTW.
sorry to say though no "lord" aint gonna save you dar.

Nice speeling
Super 8 !!!
Shot entirely on Super 8 film.
