  • For two years the pagoda dogwoods have lived happily in large containers, but now it's moving day, so we're cleaning up an area to plant them in the landscape.

Good Morning Erin, the dogwoods look great, as does that whole area. I have found using several layers of cardboard under the arborist chips kills just about anything. The cardboard will of course decompose after a year or too, but in the meantime really does the job. I've started all my new beds that way in a new home that had weeds for landscaping. Not a weed to be seen in three years. I didn't have anything as invasive as your grass but I bet that would help a lot. You can get tons of free cardboard on facebook marketplace when there are posts for free moving boxes. Really enjoy your videos and your laid back style!

Omg so fitting for me to see your video today .. I did exactly the same thing .. cleared out an area fro Virginia creeper and other bad vines had to pull out 2 very large gardenias that were so sucked in big pots.. worked on getting them out for at least 30 min... but now planted and the area looks so much better and think plants will be happier .. they were very root bound! Thanks... funny how we did same chore but of course I had no tractor.. 😝🌺🥂Cheers! So loving my gin n tonic now!!! Judy in Pensacola fl.

Hey there, Erin! Loved the video...nice job...and it was such fun to see your other half, y'all make a super cute couple!!
I use the cardboard here in Florida too...does a great job but I top dress it with pine straw cause we get tons of rain and it does not move - float - away like some mulch does. I also like the look and it helps to amend the soil after it breaks down, so we have lots of acid loving plants.
Fun to see the beautiful visitor too, thanks so much for doing this! Love your stuff. Oh, just thought about a lady over the pond that does landscaping in a very formal way and she intentionally plants trees inside pots but she cuts the bottom of the pot out so the roots go down and then she never has to water...but you have to think ahead cause they won't be moved unless you exert a ton of energy with that process...anyway, just thought you might look her up sometime. Cheers and thanks again!

Kitchen tools to the rescue! I use an old steak knife that my mom bought from a weekly grocery store promotion in the late 1960,s! I stick those free address stickers on the handle yearly so I don’t lose sight of it in the yard/garden as it has a black handle. Wise to rent it and have fun and not waste thinking about the upkeep. Wondering if the rental company might have one of those knife tools….and maybe rental work boots😊u supply the socks! Just don’t want our favorite gardening channel couple to get hurt. Love seeing MMMP! Greatly appreciate not using herbicide mindset!

What I really like about the pagoda dogwood is that it is a true 4 season tree that thrives in the woodland garden (i.e. partial shade). But I must say I have been focusing on finding the WStackman in a decent size. Thank you for demonstrating that even without the variegated foliage, these trees are lovely.

I used your suggestion and last spring I ordered the colored zip ties so all of my dahlias are labeled and ready for digging. Yeah, I cut it out for brevity. Yes, cardboard can serve as an excellent weed surpressant but it does take a while to break down. Sometimes you can plant in 6 months, but it can be longer. And I should have watered it in before I covered with the wood chips, which I did not.

Hi Erin! OMGolly, removing the Pagoda Dogwood tree from the pots was something else! I checked into that gardening knife and they're kind of expensive, but probably worth it in the long run, especially if you have quite a few pots to do. I plant 2 purple fountain grass and they're root systems are massive and very hard to get out of the pots. The Pagoda Dogwoods look really good where you planted them. It's too bad you have so many invasive weeds and grasses. I hope the cardboard and mulching will help. It's nice to see MMMP helping you. He seemed to enjoy running the equipment. The pheasant was so pretty and I loved the shot at the end. Thank you so much for sharing!

Erin, I finally had enough, trying to deal with the roots of our softwood maple trees, so I broke down and ordered a Root Slayer shovel. It's supposed to arrive on Monday or Tuesday, and I sure hope it's worth the extra cash outlay. I've repurposed plenty of kitchen knives, and other utensils, for use in my garden over the years. That kind of Maple is nothing more than a weed here, and my backyard is overrun by the seedlings, so I figured I may as well give that tool a try.

I have a 2 year old Pagoda and it's growing so nicely. I have had to trial a bunch of organic herbicides this year, I found Avenger Organics Weed Killer to work extremely well but it's expensive and doesn't go very far. I got another one marketed for commercial growers called Axxe that does work really well and cost a ton because it's commercial sized but it will make about 30 batches for my small sprayer. I'm really trying not bring out the big guns because I need to spray in larger areas. With the organics, you have to smother them after spraying as it really doesn't get the roots like the chemical killers.

Love Pagoda dogwoods my very favourite small tree. I have a native dogwood, in my front yard because of zone limitations.
Good luck controlling the grass I’m sure you’ll figure it out. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊

Oh, I am so jealous! I would love to see a pheasant but that is extremely unlikely here in the middle of Lexington, KY! Also jealous of that fabulous black soil you have - black gold! So sorry that’s where the invasive grass was. 😏 The pagoda dogwoods look great where you planted them. That clip at the end was hilarious!

Love spending a day with Erin....always fun and educational. I have a Pagoda dogwood, also love the layering and fall colors! The berries get eaten fast in spring!

Never heard of Carol Klein, but now I will look her up on TH-cam. Love the pheasant. Very much a garden ornament!

The dogwoods look really nice there! I use cardboard, too, and it suppresses the weeds for quite a while. I love your compost bins and bought the same frames because of yours. Haven't put them together yet though.😊 I never tire of watching people plant, so thanks for that!

The pagodas look great although I will miss them in the two pots. Thanks Mr. MMP for pitching in! Erin, I have several kitchen/garden knives from estate sales or thrift stores. I hope Carol gets to see this!!!

Wow! Thank you for pointing out not to put chemicals near water source, which includes storm drains too!
Your videos are so inspiring yet witty as you have a good sense of humor! Beautiful dogwoods too btw!
