a trick i used when winding steel cable. is to take a piece of pvc pipe and slide in over the cable. saves your hand and also helps keep your hand away from the rollers.
That works well and is a good tip if you tether it to one side with a shackle, bu it’ll get in the way if you want to bring the hook right up to the rollers.👍🏻

FYI in the oil field I use a 16 ounce ball ping hammer , you press or pull to keep your hand off the wire. Been doing that foe 40 + years, keeps your hand scar free. I enjoy your experiences, stay safe

Too often we forget just because we've done it a thousand times doesn't mean it's old hat to everyone. Sharing it on my RC Channel (We drive real 4×4's too), great video BSF.

I like to drag the E-brake for some extra resistance. Also, when pointing stuff out to inexperienced users, I like to tell them to not always assume that the winch will stop when they let off the button(one weakness of electric winches is the solenoids can stick on), and that, especially on a badly tangled winch, the out and in don't always work as intended. A badly tangled cable can start winding up backwards and suck itself in when you expect it to pay out.
Hi Eric , I make a door wedge from a 2x4 or 2x6 10" long to jam in the spool front to hold the cable while fitting the length comes in handy bigtime front or back of spool going in or out keeps it tight , Or using it to press the cable to guide it in on your hip .Nice wrap there .
I switched over to Boggers and plan on getting dirty this year - I'm going to try and get a winch on the front of the Bronco, but who knows, we may get to test yours out too!

I have an '87 v10 that I have owned since '89 and I still love it after many repairs and mods! Why wouldn't you use a snatch block for this?

I just posted on how you did your new bumper winch without welds. But I've seen it pull like crazy weight! So now I do know bolts can hold as much as welds. Kinda sad cause I'm a welder.
Makes me wish my winch wasn't buried in my bumper. Even plugging the remote in is a pain, tempting to pull everything appart and mount the solenoid pack where I can access it. I can get a radio remote for it but not real comfortable on that idea.

next time you are wrapping the winch in.. stuff some hot dogs into an old glove filling the fingers and thumb.. then get it caught in the rollers.. it will only be a 2 minute video but it will get a lot of views and links.. hopefully it will save some hands.. also don't let seat cover stand so close while its spooling in or out.. ANY cable can produce little strands that will rip thru clothing and skin.
I'm just curious, what size lift have ya got? What brand is it, and did you have to lengthen the driveshafts or brake lines to run it? I've got a 1985 K30 with 37s and no lift and they're super close to rubbing, and I wanna get a lift on it, just not sure what to get.
I was watching a show these guys from Australia had a 12 volt winch whenever running it under a heavy load they would step it up to 24 V what are your thoughts on that.
Any time voltage to a electric motor is increased, it will run faster and have more HP. But with a price, the motor will heat up much faster, and the brushes, wires, and contacts are designed to cary only the rated voltage.
Are they actually putting 24 volts into the winch or are they using their second battery. I wouldn't be surprised if they are putting 24 V into them, some guys here are bit cowboy in their attitude.
John Ulicky yup. For cable life sake it's best to not even wind it all the way back in on the trail. Wrap like 10-15 feet or more around your d-rings and then when you get home pull out enough to get back to the good wraps and rewrap it.
Synthetic lines don't like abrasion (dragging against trees, rocks, etc.) which is common in any off road recovery situation. Besides, a good quality cable kept clean, tight and well greased will likely last the lifetime of your rig and then some. I have a couple of cables from equipment retired decades ago (built in the 50s?) that get abused every spring to protect the pier from ice hits.
I'm confused about why you keep calling it a "flare head." Almost everyone I know, including the winch companies, calls it a "roller fairlead." Do a Google image search for "flare head" and then do one for "fairlead" and I think you'll see what I mean.

I had 3 commercials that were 30 second long each, I could have skipped some of them if I wanted. No one likes commercials, but less then 2 minutes of commercials for a 15 minute video is not bad at all.

I use an old welding glove when I re-spool-not much will puncture THAT.

That drum, and the cable too, could use some Fluid Film.
And that is why a hydraulic winch is best, run continuous and don't care! Electric winches are for trailers, hydraulic winches are for wreckers

If I understand your question, electric winches tend to be underwrap, which is how this one is installed. PTO winches often tend to be overwrap.

Instead of using your hand to hold the cable try a pulley with a long bolt as the handle. One little fray on that line will hurt like hell.

proudly served-flw synthetic ropes are stronger than steel size for size. They are prone to abrasion damage though and expensive to replace.
