You are an absolute wealth of knowledge thank you for sharing theses videos. As I stated in your penny nickel video I’m a first time owner of a older 60 . Now after spending a part of a day inside it cleaning and taking it completely apart to sort out its ejection problems and now watching your videos I feel as comfortable digging in to it as my old nylon 66’s .
Just want to say thanks. Without you my Marlin 99m1 would not be functioning today. I did not have your set up, but careful filing allowed me to install the new feed throat and lifter. I am truly grateful, a real blessing. Thanks again, Mark A. Columbiaville, Mi
Arrowdodger, thanks for this video and your various forum posts. Just upgraded the feed throat and lifter in my 1977 Model 60. Your guidance was a huge help.
I just did this to mine, I ordered from midway a new feed throat, a shell lifter and the spring on the feed throat, I used a end mill in my drill press and removed the one cast pin on the side of the feed throat but did not have to sand the edge that contacts the bolt, it fit just like the old one . And it works like a new gun again, I bought this model 60 in 1977
I found the generation of feed throat and lifter need to match. So you did good to order both. Also that going from the old style to new style (throat and lifter) the spring sits differently. In this video I was going from gen2 to gen3; also known as "old" to "new". Maybe the spring is different from gen2 to gen3 but it can be adjusted to work. I think there are at least 6 different versions and lucky if you can find the feed throat anymore.
This helped me Immensely. I have 2 old marlin 60s trying to get them to feed and fire. Aquired a newer action for $25 and was hoping some of the parts would interchange.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the old Marlin Model 60. I need to order a couple parts to keep mine running like new. It is still working pretty well though.
I Really appreciate your video here. I have a Early 70s Glenfield 60 and a first year Marlin 99 with a non grooved receiver and drilled and tapped for peep sights on the side and a separate scope base on top. Also it has a really Beautiful fiddleback walnut stock. Both need this upgrade, where do you suggest I get the parts from ? I also need a new trigger guard which is broken on the Glenfield. They are both the old 3 screw trigger guard. Also do you know anywhere I could get a scope base for the older non-grooved 99 ?
I stumbled on a feedthroat kit for the Glenfield Model 75 in the NUMRICH catalog. I ordered one, but have not received it yet. It appears to consist of the most modern changes shown in this video. It should fit Model 60s as well, I think.
Hey I put a newer lower unit in a model 60 and the front of the old one was held with 2 screws and the newer one is a slide under model do I lock tight the screw to a specific position or replace them with a pin ? Thanks you for any assistance you can provide.
The pin is .125 diameter. I have done similar to your idea but the expose should be 1/8 diameter and not 8/32 threads. The threads are likely .162 and cause the action to be pinched into the receiver and cause problems.
I have a new action assembly but when getting a new bolt I accidentally bought the old style bolt so I followed your instructions on how to make it work and it fit perfect. My only problem came with cartridge lifter that didn't match my bolt, so my question is do I replace lifter and spring to match same era?
The feedthroat, lifter and spring should be the same era/revision level. If you replace lifter spring, you should also replace recoil spring so they maintain balance.
I have a 1978 Mod 60 that smashes the nose of the bullet on about 75% of the rounds. It sounds like I need to go to the new feed throat to replace the two piece version, along with a set of springs. I don't have it all apart here in the office, but it doesn't seem to be spread apart, more like the two side plates are actually wider than the barrel mount point? My other question is if i can also get hold open feature added while I have the gun apart, and if so do I use the newer parts list on Numrich and need the newer style bolt for that to work? thanks for doing the videos.
I do not know the exact year the old/new style action assembly transistion. If your action assembly is old style bolt-on, LSHO will be expensive to add. If it is the newer, slip-tab style action assembly, you could buy an action assembly off Ebay cheap that would have the new feed-throat and LSHO. Then you could slot the trigger guard for the lever.
i grinded the edge like you did to fit old bolt now it's catching a quarter inch from closing all the way if i push it, it will close but i can't figure out what it's catching on. i put old feed throat on with old spring and cartridge lifter and bolt closes perfect, any ideas? i mic'ed old feed throat and new one and the top rails are taller on newer one should i file them down a little?
thank you! mark degener! yeah it looks like it could use a little more! i sure appreciate the information thank you! i will let you Know when i fix it!
It's your cartridge lifter. You need a new style or grind the tang off the bottom where the spring goes. That tang fit through an opening in the old feed throat but that opening is not there in the new feed throat. I had the same problem. Found it after filing more material off the throat to no avail.
thanks for the vids - Do you have to grind off the nub on the side or can you drill a hole in the side plate for better stability? Thanks again. FWIW: I've been seeing your post in various forums about marlins for a while ever since I bought my first used Marlin 60 a few years ago (a 2004 model). Now just picked up an old Glenfield for pretty cheap and seem to be having the similar feeding issue with the 2 part throat.
You are very welcome. You can drill a hole but I consider it a lot more work and the chance of error is great. Marlin had 3 hole configurations for many years. I kinda think the 4 hole design offered them the option of 2 identical plates instead of RH & LH.
love that youre making more marlin videos. any word on reshaping the extractor to a sharper angle, more similar to the 10/22 volquartsen, or lightening the marlin bolt? i wish we had aftermarket support for parts instead of heating, hammering, and case hardening to tinker
No matter what I do I cant get the bolt to slam home. Its 1/4 inch open. I keep grinding and grinding. I even compared it to the old feed throat and ground down some of the bevel so it isnt as high on the right side just like the old one.
Try extending the new taper around the rear back end of the feed throat. The bolt may be hitting there. If you have the bolt and action free of the receiver, you can check the fit easier. Also I wonder if your strut bridge got flipped to not allow disconnector drop.
Can you swap the old style bolt for the new style in the old rails so you don't have to grind the feed throat? Will the hold open work with the old bolt and new feed throat?
i'm pretty certain you can but they changed the charger handle too so you may have to get the matching year charger handle for whatever bolt you are getting.
Hello i have a marlin 60 model with the hammer bunnie ears but they broke so is that causing my gun not to fire? And will it work if i replace the hammer with a newer style please help and thank you

I have an older Model 60 and I'm pretty sure the feed throat is worn (wont feed at all. Jams while feeding every shot). My question for grinding in that bevel, is it rounded or is it flat?
Do you know of anyone who has modified the lifter arm to work with 22 shorts? It looks possible by welding an extension to the protrusion that blocks cartridges coming from the feed throat. Also there's a slight nagging doubt the feed throat itself would need to be modified. It would require skills from higher than my pay grade and actually I'm quite pleased with my 1974 model 60, just the way it sits. Other people might have an interest have an actions crafted for shorts to interchange with their 22 LR action.
I got a glenfield 75c it looks pretty much the same as this. I'm pretty sure I have the two piece part in mine. Can I make the model 60 part fit in a model 75c or is it too different?
@@arrowdodgerluvsmarlins1758 I'll try to make a video of never did it before, I stripped the action down and matched the plates side-by-side and put them in a vise and used the plate as a template.
Thank you for this...I was wondering...is it possible to use a new bolt and charging Handel rather than grind on the feed throat. Meaning, will the newer bolts fit. I have a pre-1968 western auto (model 99). Thank you for any information.
I love Marlin 60's as well :-) I have two of them that did give me problems and one that still does. One had a failure to eject but after watching your nickle trick video its now fixed, thank you. The other one has a failure to load and I think that the feed throat is separating. This video you created has given me insight on fixing the issue. My other 5 Marlins all work great. Yea I know I have seven of them but I do love the old model 60's. I always replace the firing pins in all of them because they seem blunt and worn as well and the recoil springs because they seem to be always bent when I dissemble them after buying them from my local pawn shop. It seems that Brownells.com does not have any feed throats in stock. Do you know of another site that caries the conversion kit along with the new bolts? I do not have the necessary tools to convert my own. Or do you sell the converted feed throats.
Just think of all those thousands of vintage Glenfields and Marlins that can be updated to shoot better than new with a new feed-throat and/or a "Nickel trick" tweak. It did take Marlin a few years to perfect this design but now it is superb ! Numrichs and Midway and Marlin should have them also. Ebay has some that can be pricy. I have converted several and I have a spare if you have exhausted all other sources.
I have one Glenfield. I love the squirrel etching on the stock. I'll check out the other sites you gave me. I'm sure I will find what I'm looking for. Thank you for the videos.
To save money? Midwayusa wants $50 for a bolt and $12 for a charging handle plus shipping. I would rather stay close to the original and and save $$ if possible.
