Could you do a video about how these volunteer departments are funded with great buildings and trucks? In the south most of them are old buildings and old used equipment.

Difference between north and south… property taxes

A lot of departments do fundraisers, Events and etc to get funds to be able to purchase new apparatus and to purchase new equipment.

I have been wanting this for a wile. Because I can tell you that my volly dept dosnt have anything this nice. We do fund raisers and such but with out going in to substantial debt we can’t have anything like this.

I was on a volunteer department Suffolk County Long Island NY from January 1968-November 1972 when I went into the US Air Force fire service. The way these departments get funding primarily is through very high personal property taxes. They also do fund drives, some sell bonds and such. My old department just bought a top of the line aerial that has everything. What’s not painted is chrome, custom paint job, every piece of equipment you can imagine. It was over one million dollars. The truck is awesome and gorgeous. Now I retired from city fire departments here where I live, and the last department I worked at I was tasked with writing the bid specifications that go out for bid. Our city attorney and the city charter did not allow us to ask for a specific manufacturer, but to send the bids to many. Some don’t bid, and others do. Then once the bids were opened, my tasks was to cull through every line and paragraph to see of they took and exceptions to a particular specification which would not necessarily cause us to refuse the bid. Once that process was done, then the fire chief and I would review the spreadsheet and decide which bid mostly or totally met our bid, and if it was within the budget the city manager allowed. The last aerial we purchased before I retired was about $650,000. And that was the highest amount at that time the city ever spent on a truck. On Long Island and many northeast volunteer departments that thrive on personal property tax, they don’t go through all that. A number of years ago, the New York newspaper, Newsday, did a comprehensive article on Long Island volunteer fire departments and how much they spend on apparatus p, facilities, loose fire equipment and such. It was a eye opener. They have about 110 separate fire departments in Suffolk County alone. Some have very small run districts, others have a lot, but they all want the brightest, best looking, fanciest and it’s almost a competition as to who gets the best truck. See if you can find that Newsday article and you’ll be surprised at how much money these departments have. I’m sure it’s the same for most of the northeast. In my state ( Oklahoma) almost all the volunteer departments struggle to get a building, apparatus, equipment, fuel, and folks to volunteer. Rarely do you see a brand new truck. Many are purchased second or third hand from some other department. They depend on donations, fund drives etc.But they make it work with little, and are quite good at it. Some departments are fortunate to get tax dollars to help fund them.

If so then I say my hometown of Steinbach Manitoba fire department or where I live now my volunteer fire departments of bath or Florenceville Bristol or the city of Fredericton new Brunswick Canada is amazing too. Thanks. 🙂 love your videos I'm learning alot about what they do from your videos. 🙂👍😃

Very nice station, everything seems to have been thought of. Great job by the engineering firm and the fire departments making it all come together.
But, as was pointed out, being a rural area with no hydrants, why would the department opt to eliminate having a tanker/tender? The utility isn’t quite as necessary as water when the time comes to fight a fire. It’s good to hear that each of the engines have larger on board booster tanks but having a tanker carrying the same amount of water as both engines combined would double the available water on scene without any outside resources being needed.

This VFD station is impressive. My career department is pretty much a pole shed from an older time. It certainly not longer suits it purpose of housing career staff around the clock. Where do these departments get their money?!? Could you please share their call volume? I’m always amazed at the amount of money that is invested in these VFD departments. Built like a career house, almost in excess.
