    Sean, I used to be a teacher, and I'm constantly impressed by how well you create enjoyable, practical lessons that having something bigger behind them conceptually. You make learning fun, and that's the key. Practice is what it's all about (I don't really believe in talent, but if there is such a thing it's enthusiasm) And enthusiastic students practice more.

      I appreciate it!

      Yes, I agree, I wrote and edited instructions and other professional docs, and I wouldn't be surprised if Sean knows a thing or two, formally, about dissecting and presenting information.

      Talent absolutely exists. Call it an innate capability to perform a certain task, if you like, but it certainly exists.

    if any of you cannot afford a looper pedal i would recommend downloading a DAW like Reaper which is free and a demo of peavey revalver or guitar rig or something and using that to record a loop. You can trim the edges and play it on repeat. You might have to spend money on a cheap interface to plug in guitar to your computer.

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Great advice man!

    • @jorritkroes4977
      @jorritkroes4977 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you recommend any of those 'cheap interfaces' to connect my guitar to my computer? I'm not sure what I would need to do that effectively.

    • @hYpYz
      @hYpYz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Guitar interface is pretty a guitar jack with input level control(can you tell im not audio eng:D). I am using sound card that already has guitar jack. If your sound card has line input but it's for a headphone jack you can buy adapter for a guitar cable. If you don't have line input you need guitar interface here are few tinyurl.com/jf8n9nm . there is one for 43 GBP at the bottom of the list. If you don't have a job this might not be "cheap". Once you have something like that you will need guitar amp simulator. Revalver, Amplitue, Guitar Rig, Bias. There is more and most of them have demos. Difficulty in setting it up will depend on how good you are with computers but once it's running you're good to go. You will need a DAW for recording loops. I recommend Reaper. Has a lot of instructional videos online and it's free. Good luck ! ask away if you get stuck.

    • @hYpYz
      @hYpYz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i just had a closer look at those interfaces and i think that focusrite scarlet 2i2 has some positive reviews so if you can shell out 90GBP(112$) i would buy that. Or look for something cheaper. That alesis core 1 has mic input jack so I'm not sure if its good for guitar input. You will need to have a look at different forums and products if you're looking for something cheaper. I would still recommend it over looper pedal for home use. You will be able to create jam tracks with drums and layered guitars which will make practising modes and other lessons Sean in a more complete way.

      at the prices they are quoting for an interface a cheap loop pedal would be a better option ...boss rc1 £85 donner looper loop lenth 10 min unlimited over dub £40 aroma alp 3 £35 or a boss rc2 or rc3 all the boss lopers have a usb in/out so you can import export loops to your pc check the demos on youtube i have a boss rc3 99 loop patch banks 3hr record time unlimited overdubs metrinome / basic drum paterns its probably the best practice tool i have ever bought and you could pick up a 2nd hand one for around £100 well worth the money and you will not feel the need to upgrade.... all loopers mentiond and prices are from e bay as of 21feb 2017 hope this helps dont know what the quality of the cheaper ones are like as i havent used them but i put them in as options for you to check out

    WOW! That was great advice. Getting inside of a scale shape to learn how to play the melody of the song with a looper? AWESOME! Thanks I've got some work to do.

  • @FastRedPonyCar
    @FastRedPonyCar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Regarding practicing with vocal melodies, IMO the most important thing it can teach you is that vocalists aren't confined to the rhythm structure of the music. They can sing their notes whenever they want as long as the melody they are singing makes sense musically. We as guitar players can strategically step out of that box as well but doing it right where it doesn't sound like you've just lost timing is fairly difficult if your brain isn't used to it.

      Your previous video convinced me to buy a looper so I got the Ditto X2 but I miss a function to store multiple loops. It can only hold one loop (with an infinite amount of overdubs but still only one loop). I bet looping pedals which can store multiple loops are pretty expensive though. Another nice feature I saw on some loop pedal video was a tempo knob so you can adjust the bpm of the loop after you recorded it.

    Good lesson on using a looper Sean. A lot of guys in my age group haven't embraced them, because they don't get them. Plus, as you pointed out, it takes time to get used to using them, when to start and stop for example.

    Great demo. Some people have a hard time getting the technique down at first because they make it much harder than it is. For those of us used to using a drum machine for backing realize the start- stop points for the looper are the same.

    I've been playing/gigging for 30 years and I've never looped in my life. My looper is coming tomorrow in the post. I was going to get something basic to start with so I ordered a Electro Harmonics 95000. I'll move on to something better when I've got the hang of it.

    I cannot express enough how much this video just helped me. I bought a looper a few weeks ago and I just couldn't get the timing down on it. So I just played along with the drum feature basically or let the drums run for a few beats and then come in and stop so there wouldn't be any break in the music....but man oh man, your a life saver. Thanks to you I finally got the hang on recording with it

    Good Points Sean. I was given an Infinity Looper a year or so ago and for some reason stopped using it, mostly because I couldn't get that timing issue down and I had started using a JS-10 eBand to play along with. I saw the title to this video a few days ago and it sparked the thought that I should hook it up and try again. It has been sitting on the floor by my amp all this time, lonely. After a few attempts at counting myself in (something I had gotten better at during this time away) I got that beautiful, doesn't-feel-like-a-loop loop working and it has both improved my timing and my ability to recognize the chord changes. I also realized I had to turn down the volume on the rhythm loop if I wanted to solo over it without volume clash.
    Then today, I decided to watch your video see what you had to say about it and, low and behold, you touched on all of it. I imagine this would have been great info for me many months ago. I'm certain it will help many others now. Now I will work on the "singing" aspect of soloing. Thanks. Good Stuff.

    Yeah , Ive been watching alot of your lessons, i recently purchased a NUX MG 100, which is a super cheap multifonction pedal and the loop helps me to be my own band anytime.. It saves you time when you want to practice by yourself..no need to meet up with other people.. Basic Chords Loop + Play inversions (to play with someone else) + play scales over it..
    its a must..

    Thanks to your video, I'm now looking at Looper Pedals. 40 years playing a guitar and I'm old school, like Keith Richards. No pedals. But this opens up a whole new can of worms .... which one to get. These two devices have great vids .... Digitech Trio+ Looper and the Boss Eband JS-10 ... hmmmm ... any ideas. I love your vids because I always get something out of them and learn something new. Can't say that for a lot of vids where I swear the instructors are out to impress themself. Keep up the good work.

    You can set up a loop with a progression but when you are playing a lead sound over it it sounds good if you go straight into amp from a few effects. you then have control over both volumes and you can marry the effect of both. They are a great tool for building your own backing tracks . A good place to start is to put down a verse and chorus and off you go .You can put a lead line in then as long as you know the start and finish of loop. A whammy bar to help you on last chord of loop.

    Sweet. I trained my playing by ear abilities from trying to play along with Pink Floyd. Different every time, but it's uncanny how close I get to the music. Doubt I'll ever be able to mechanically play through a riff or solo though. I'm going to try this technique. Will likely take me to the next level.

    Score yourself 2 in a row ....just that I am working on. I play Tenor and Alto Sax so I loop my chords on guitar then voice over or sax the voice. Voice looper too. Thanks.... another great practice lesson. Your lessons verify that I am working in the correct direction with my geetar playing...I been working on Hitch A Ride by Boston. I can loop the intro than just improv over the D G A ? great stuff... Any suggestions for Percussion or Keyboarding along. Guess by the time I'm done I should have a small studio in my music room. Sean, I recently came across your tutorials and I'm very pleased about your lessons and mostly your attitude. I came home from a tour of duty to Afghanistan injured in May of 2015. I remained on a medical hold status in Norfolk, Virginia for two years as I received surgery and physical therapy. I met another wounded warrior in Norfolk that played guitar and liked what I saw. I'm now medically retired and learning guitar and really enjoying it. As I continue to learn to play guitar, I find myself jumping all over the place, from riffs to a solo to strumming chords etc... Though I'm having a wonderful time, I feel like I need to settle down and take this process one thing at a time. With my military mentality I don't want to just play, I want to know theory and why everything sounds like it does. I'm not sure where to start with scales and of course anything else. What advise can you give me, I feel like everything I do is great practice however it seems like I'm only scratching the surface in so many topics. Mark...

      Thanks so much for reaching out Mark, and more importantly thank you for your service! I think a lot of what you're doing is great so far, jumping around from learning riffs/solos/songs is definitely a great way to learn, especially when you're starting out. But I hear you on wanting to make a more disciplined approach to go with it. For me it all comes down to the major scale and being able to play it forwards and backwards, just drilling it. There are a couple different scale shapes, but major is king. I made a video series on the 'modes', which you can think of as different major scale positions, you might want to check out. I'm gonna have some more videos on this soon so stay tuned! And don't ever hesitate with questions!

      Well, I printed off some copies of the major pentatonic scale and I will be practicing them as you mentioned. It's really hard to say I have a favorite song however have you ever thought about doing a tutorial on Clapton/ Cream Crossroads, what a great sounding piece of art. Anyway Sean thank you for the advice and please rock on, we need you... Mark USN retired...

    Nice video. Good ideas. Looper pedals are great. You can jam indefinitely. Like a never ending jam track! BTW, Marty Music just posted a great lesson for how to play "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey. I just learned it there. Cool song to play with the moving bass notes.

    I’ve tried 3 looper pedals and I just don’t use them. Sold the first 2 and loaned the 3rd to a band mate. I’ve found I have a lot more fun and make much faster progress with jam backing tracks from Quist.

    I'm interested on buying a looper pedal, I'm between the boss rc1 and the boss rc3. The thing is that I'm not really very experienced at guitar so I think rc1 should be enough for me, but rc3 has more useful options that maybe in the future (when I get more experienced) could help me. So my question is which one should I choose? Thanks for your answers.

    • @DJ_StephenMarsh
      @DJ_StephenMarsh 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      pdm1412 Go with whatever fits your budget and needs. I almost jumped on a BOSS GT100 pedal station but thoroughly thought about it, and decided on just a ditto looper for now. I figure if I ever "grow out" of the ditto I can just sell it and get a looper with more options.

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Man the ultimate question! ThePyrosteve definitely has some good advice. From my own experience, every time I've been faced with this one, I've never regretted buying something with less features if I couldn't see myself using it at the time I bought it, if that makes sense. And also it is pretty easy to buy and sell secondhand pedals so like he said, if you outgrow the RC1, trade in and trade up, you may not even need to!

    • @pdm1412
      @pdm1412 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Learning where to find the same things repeat on the fretboard is also quite useful...like play a c-scale in as many positions as you can figure...
    I have the boss rc 2 and whilst i count i sometimes find it still can have a little delay....or would you say it still is a matter of practice??
    Weird example but i have a ds1 too and it makes the signal disappear for a fraction of a second when switched on...i have started compensating automatically and switch it on a tiny bit before i want it so i get the desired boost when i want it...with the looper it is just not so easy...if it even is that...in order to get more pleasure out of the looper i have started repeating progressions for 2 or 3 or 4 times so i can play over the repititions before the bump comes....ill practice some more though and try out your method, maybe i wasnt persistent enough

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for reaching out Andre. Yeah I don't think it's supposed to work that way. So maybe keep trying to practice with it and if that delay is still there, it could be something up with the pedal, but it's for sure supposed to sound pretty much seamless. Good luck!
