    Oh wow that was great. Sorry for the late reply guys. Thoroughly enjoyed the video. Funny I never noticed the AC/DC on the tools before, I guess that's why I was confused on what they could possibly used for. I'll keep and eye out for that when purchasing them in the future. I laughed when the phone rang and you said "Is it the President". I was in the US Navy and so was my wife, that's where we met, she was a lower rank. So when she would call all my Navy buds would say "It's the Admiral You better take this call"! Then they'd laugh when I jumped up to answer. Yeah she was a looker back then, but then again weren't we all, LOL. Thanks so much for doing the video guys. It was very informative and I jumped up about 35 more subscribers than usual in the last 28 days. I was wondering what had change and where all these new subs were coming from. Turns out all the time it was my Buddies, Road & Mike hooking me up, LOL. Oh Darn!, and the whole time I thought the world was finally warming up to me! Bubble Popped, sniff sniff. Thanks for the video again guys.

    You're looking for "series-wound" motors, where the armature and stator are connected in series. Most small power tools like drills have series-wound motors and can actually run on AC or DC even if they have a line cord. I actually got a drill to run on a 9v battery! I just touched the battery contacts to the plug. It ran really slow of course, but it worked!

    An old farmhouse that the Mrs and I rented (way back) was still wired for DC power, but obviously not connected. But it still had DC fixtures on the walls and DC light sockets in the basement and attic. Modern AC was run to surface mounted outlets, through surface conduits on the walls. I'm sure there was some kinda code violation there. But anyways that's a cool old generator, nice addition to your stable.

    You can run a stove or cloths dryer with that and a 60hz current alternater (120 up, 120 down = 240A/C single phase). You would need some serious transistors, though. That is a beautiful little machine.

    Many years ago I was still in school, my father saw an advert in the paper of a guy selling 220V generators, so we drove to the city and pick one up. He illustrated it worked on a drill, vacuum cleaner, no problem.
    Getting home the 1st thing I want to do is weld, ok, wrong. So I connect the welder, start engine, and switch welder on. The engine freezed on the spot. Tried again, same thing. What now. So later we figured out it was a DC 220V generator, keep in mind now we actually only knew about 12V/24V DC geneartors, never heard of a 220V DC generator ever, (must have been imports) and 220V AC generators.
    This was a funny lesson learned, luckily the guy took it back and refunded, he did not say it was 220V DC.

    Commutation. Brushes commutate or alternate the current flow to produce a varying magnetic field for DC input. AC provides commutation because it alternates so you don't need mechanical commutation IE brushes which energize different windings as the motor rotates.

    • @whtstr2133
      @whtstr2133 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Armature
      @Tiporari check out Tesla patents, there's a self-running generator, big enough to fill a large room... #487796. Has a mag field inducer into the motor, DC motor, 3 phase generator that only outputs one phase. Works by being OUT of phase... We pay for electricity because of greed. I would've liked to see a world where $13 is too high for a bill.

    Hi Roadking, can I ask you an off-topic engine question? I'm trying to restore a 1972 Volkswagen bug that I bought recently. The engine needs a lot of work, but I have no experience rebuilding engines and don't really have anyone in my area who can help. I'm on my own pretty much. I'm cleaning the engine and fixing it the best I can with a repair manual and watching videos, etc. I'm kind of "iffy" about whether the valves are completely sealing. I cleaned and lapped them but I'm not totally sure if I did it right. In your experience, do valves have to be "perfect" for an engine to run or how forgiving is it usually?

    • @805ROADKING
      @805ROADKING  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      VW engines are pretty forgiving so it would probably run if they are iffy!! But it's easy enough to do it right!! Just keep lapping til you get a solid grey ring on the valve and the seat!! If the valves are pitted too bad, they're only $10 new!! There are probably dozens of VW forums on Facebook, you could get anything you need for that engine free!!☺

    Only trouble with DC is its tendency to arc in things like switches, so they'll destroy toggle or rocker switches in no time when used with a heavyish load, which is why you usually see slider switches used on DC stuff (like say a 12v car vac), they can resist the arcing a lot more readily than regular switches... :)

    When I worked on aircraft voltage they said DC "pushes" and AC "shakes" so, DC will knock you away and AC will grab you and rattle you to death. I've taken a few minor hits and all I remember is when it's AC, 440hz is a higher pitched pain than 60hz.
    But the only people I saw get killed by AC or DC was in training videos and it was always so much power it didn't matter. Those dudes were like a blown fuse, burnt hair and everything.
