In a cross-fandom, it would be incredible for the USS Enterprise-D to come in, destroying 3 basestars, and significantly crippling the fourth, towing Galactica on a tractor beam.
It worked.... Pegasus saved Galatica - though more importantly - it saved the Evac of New Caprica and took out 3 Base Stars. The machines never saw it coming. Father Cavil was likely impressed. These are not the droids YOU or THEY are looking for.
I think they should have sacrificed Galactica instead, Pegasus is larger (as I recall) and way more modern. But then the show could have ended differently
If only there were one more Mercury-class battlestar, this testers would have been wrecked, Pegasus alone were carving thru them, like hot knive thru the butter
Cylon: "Sir, if I may..." Baltar: "Not Now! I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction". Cylon: "I really think you should take a look at the other Battlestar". What the battlestar Pegasus always makes me think of.
Cylon: "Sir, if I may..." Number One/Cavil: "Not Now! I'm watching the Pegasus explosion." Cylon: "I really think you should take a look at the Pegasus landing bay."
As much as I love this scene. How about this? Scenario 1 - Both Battlestars take part in battle from start 1. Galactica performs the Adama orbital drop, then returns to orbit. 2. Pegasus jumps into orbit and performs its long range shots to take out Basestars. It is later joined by Galactica. 3. Pegasus is manned adequately and provides its long range cover, thus the two Battlestars keep the Base ships at bay as they have done so before. Scenario 2 - Pegasus arrives as it did above. 1. This time Pegasus fires long range salvos, but also launches Vipers. All Vipers head for Galactica to defend it, whilst Pegasus keeps its distance. Seeing Galactica still take fire, Pegasus then TEMPORARILY moves to the centre. 2. As Galactica limps away protected by Vipers, Pegasus also moves away from the Basestars, engaging its main batteries. 3. Galactica's Vipers ascend from the planet and instead head for Pegasus to defend it. 4. Pegasus repairs FTL drive. 5. Galactica has jumped away already. 6. Galactica Vipers land on Pegasus and the Battlestar Pegasus though damaged, jumps to safety. Scenario 3 - Same as above, but with change 1. Pegasus arrives saving Galactica. 2. Instead of 4 Basestars, there are 14 Basestars. 3. Given the overwhelming odds, despite taking out 3 Basestars from long range, Lee orders Pegasus in between Galactica and the remaining 11 Basestars. 4. Adama now realises what his son is going to do. He calls all Vipers back to Galactica. Including Pegasus' Vipers (which have come to the battle). 5. The Pegasus now remains to defend the Civilian ships breaking from orbit. 6. Pegasus manages to take out another 3 Basestars leaving 8 remaining, but its FTL drive goes offline. 7. Pegasus now engages the Lee Adama manoeuvre to sacrifice itself. This time as the Raptors jump away, Pegasus runs straight into the enemy fleet, all guns blazing on auto fire. 8. Pegasus takes out a further 2 Basestars via a direct collision and explodes taking out another 5. 9. Only 1 Basestar remains with the Cylons in shock having lost virtually all their fleet and watching the last civilian ships jump away. My preference is for Scenario 2.
That zooming out, Galactica being battered, no hope in sight....and then gunfire and DRUMS with big letters "PEGASUS" on the side of the ship as it flies by. Most cinematic arrival in a space battle ever.

@Daniel Rodriguez yeah but lee was a total idiot he could have tried to kill all the cylons and saved the Pegasus but oh no gotta sacrifice her to save old dad cause thinking was not his strong suit
@@raven4k998 But being the Superior ship Lee knew it could sustain damage longer than Galactica and had superior fire power, so the Superiority of the Pegasus was why it was chosen to take out the Cylons.
@@johnharris6655 not arguing that but he was a dumbass to leave his vipers behind which could have protected the topside of Pegasus which is the only spot Pegasus was vulnerable to taking damage from attacks and her vipers sat there doing ship cause the civilian fleet was safe where they were during the battle
The way Lee takes a last look around the flaming bridge is reminiscent of Sisko taking a last look at the Defiant bridge in DS9 before it was destroyed. And RDM wrote both episodes.
She was a mighty, angry beast, long since tired of being mistreated by a host of poor leaders. Lee was by no means the best Commanding Officer, but he was a hell of a lot better than his predecessors. In death, she got to let loose that rage that she'd bottled up for so long, and I bet the Cylons barely even knew what hit them.
@@kpmh2001 She was more than angry at this point. She's a warship who finally as you noted had a commander worthy of her. She was not going to let him or his crew down while she still could fight. And she did not let them down.
The "thank you" has so many meanings, always gives me a heavy heart. It was Lee Adama's first and only true command of a battlestar, he's thinking her for that honour. It saved what was left of humanity from New Caprica, he was thanking her for saving them. It saved his father and he's thanking her for that and despite the Pegasus being a more advanced, hugely superior ship, he's thanking her for saving his true home - the Galactica. The final shot of the Pegasus emblem only being engulfed in fire to me almost feels like it is the ship saying you're welcome.
@@SaraMorgan-ym6ueMy reading is different from yours Adama as a father is pissed his son got into this mess. Adama the commander is thankful Lee gave him the chance to get his crew out of it.
I really feel like the show gave him very concrete things to work with, when combat is occurring it's always _decisive_ in some way and never mindless. When I say mindless I mean the shameless use of stock space combat footage in season 1, in those scenes the music is generic because there isn't much to work with.
@@moppypuppy781 Well, I just binged SEE, an Apple TV series and McCreary composed for that. The soundtrack really helps to differentiate the show and give it an other-worldly feeling, especially in the first episode. Watching that in the dark was incredibly immersive.
Later in the series Laura Roslin says to Lee that he is so hell-bent on doing the right thing that he forgets to do the smart thing. That's probably the best example of that. Lee did trade a superior battlestar for a superior commander (although his motivation was purely emotional) and I think that ultimately this trade did pay off.
Admiral Adama knew that it was his duty to ensure humanity's survival, even at cost of his own life and the destruction of Galactica. Because the operation of rescuing civillians from New Caprica was extremely risky, he decided to have Pegasus stay with the civillian fleet. But Lee wouldn't have been able to live with the thought that he could've saved his father's life and he didn't, even if he was following his father's direct orders. They were both trying to do the right thing. Just like Dee said to Lee, that he is more similiar to his father than he knows.
I see this comment all the time and it gets dumber and dumber every time read it. It was Adama's plan and he ordered Lee to stay with the civilian fleet no matter what. If Lee didn't violate his orders the civilian ships trying to leave the planet would have been destroyed with the galactica. He sacrificed the pegasus to save his father and the crew of the galactica and ended up saving the civilian fleet leaving new Caprica and destroyed 3 base stars in the process. If he followed orders Adama would be dead, the crew of the galactica would be dead, the fighter pilots would be dead and everyone trying to escape new caprica would be dead. bUt lEe iS aN iDiOt
@@Bitchslapper316 tbh i dont consider Lee is an idiot Since his father did make messed up move of using an old battlestar and just put it on falling down an orbit to drop out vipers when he could have just send an assault raptors team which wouldnt have caused the ship to be damage that badly (i would justify the sending an old battlestar instead of a better one by the fact that they thought there are only 2 basestars) so in the end, i think Lee just done the best move he could to save his father and a massive amount of lifes that would have been lost along with the remaining fleet (like you said) and cause the Pegasus to not function as well as it was show (since Pegasus lost 350ish crew before it reunite with the fleet and now losing half of what left of it crew)
BSG did the best Space Battles before The Expanse came out, the shot of Galactica surrounded on all sides by the base stars and still fighting is glorious, i think it is only matched as far as shots go by the one of the battleship Sagrmatha firing all her PDC'S and remaining railgun at the Battle of the Sole Gate in the Expanse.
This scene, as the camera is panning out and the music quiets, and the 'Pew Pew'... That was so awesome. It's on par with 'There are 4 jump points opening right on top of us!' and then Delenns 'He is behind me - you are in front of me. If you value your lives, be somewhere else!' scene. Tough call for me which one is more epic.
Me too!! It's so stressful when you can't see a way out for Galactica and then so exhilarating when Lee saves the day and then SO heartbreaking seeing Pegasus go. Aagh! What a rollercoaster!! And the score was something I've listened to for years since
This is such a great scene. As they pull away from the Galactica just getting decimated with that music playing, you are convinced the ship is done for. Then those first few missiles fly past. The Pegasus and the shift in music. So well done.
Still think that Lee had a gréat element of surprise, and tipped the scale tbf. Pegasus took out a whole Base Star, with an opening salvo: Instead of 4 vs1, it was 3 vs 2. With the Cylons positions on the Galactica, surely the Pegasus could have taken out a 2nd Basestar with that forward battery, evening the numbers, yet Battlestars, even the old and battered down Galactica, were more powerful then a Cylon Basestar! Even in the 3 vs 2, the Battlestars would outgun the Basestars! Besides that, the Pegasus was thé most powerful Battlestar: a Mercury Class. More of a Dreadnought, compared to the Galactica being a warship. On top of that, Admiral Cain stripped other vessels and equipped the Pegasus with even more weaponry then it already had: the Pegasus was an absolute béast of a vessel!
I jumped up and down with tears in my eyes and cheered when I saw the salvo and pegasus and heard the Japanese drums beating.. makes me tear up everytime i see this scene!! :)
I just CANT watch this without lamenting the utter waste of a Mercury Class. Galactica has my heart but the Pegasus was the greatest asset humanity had outside of Adama and Roslin's leadership.
It aint about the ship but about the symbol. Galactica was a museum piece that made it through everything. From tactical standpoint? No reason to sacrifice Pegasus over Galactica. But people need symbols to keep on fighting.
@@vojtechpeterka1929 Cause the show is named Galactica not Pesasus, though wouldve been cool if they sacrificed Galactica instead and then in the next episode renamed the show to Battlestar Pegasus
It wasn;t a sound military decision. I think the show makes this perfectly clear. Don't watch a 5 minute clip and think you know all the context of the show. Lee just couldn't live with it, couldn't face the fact it was a suicide run for Galactica, it's crew, and possibly everybody on the surface. So he came back. It was a purely emotional decision.
You're all ignoring the primary reason he did it. To buy time for the civilian ships. Galactica couldn't buy any more time because it was on the verge of being destroyed. Also, the crew of the galactica was almost their entire military. Lee had no crew.
First time I saw this I was in awe of how awesome it looked, and how bad it was strategically. Until I realized Galactica had a full compliment of crew while Pegasus only had a skeleton crew that could escape in 4 raptors. In that regard, this sacrifice made sense.
Yeah, I was about to mention the same thing. They sacrificed the better ship to save hundreds of their military crew, which at that point is probably about 95-99% of all their military personnel
Except the Pegasus had the capability to build more vipers as well as being the more advanced ship, It made sense to save them but not to sacrifice the ship.
Neither ship had anywhere near the full compliment even if they tried. You don't remember the great difficulty they had maintaining a CAP and training for the mission in the build up to Exodus? Galactica was drastically understaffed, Adama needed Helo as his XO which pretty much sums up how short they were.
@@Trappygit Maybe at the time of the show it’s in the discussion. But the best moment in TV history goes to The Red Wedding (GoT) precisely due to the A++ writing which set that scene up for over 2 full seasons before the ridiculously dramatic and shocking payoff. The drama this show created was bar none. Your heart is in your throat the whole time. Stakes don't get higher than the literal survival of the human race.
Still one of my favorite scenes in all of science fiction. That slow pull away from Galactica and then the missiles flying in and that drumbeat. To this day... Chills.
i was thinking the same thing. pegasus could have disabled all the base stars as easily as it popped the first one. buy it makes for really good action!
@@rhoonah5849 Plot-wise, there was no need to sacrifice the Pegasus. It was due to production being unable to keep the Pegasus sets (due to the introduction of the Basestar interiors) that they chose to destroy it.

@@coloradobrad6779 by that time no doubt those construction ships they had in the fleet would be up to scratch and building for Galactica wouldn't it? Hard to imagine the civilians were standing idle (unless you were on Hitei Kan, lazy fraks).
4:34 With a vivid enough imagination, one can hear Pegasus screaming a gargantuan *"FRAK YOOOOOUUUU--!!!"* as she's making those final few hundred meters to her own death and the destruction of her enemies.
HOLY DETAIL! I just noticed that when Pegasus collides with the basestar, you see a trail of small flaming explosions going to the back of the ship. She only explodes when they reach near the engines where the fuel would have caught fire and destroyed her.
Ages ago I read a random thread on here where people were debating why Pegasus seemed to explode from her engines. The prevailing theory was that an issue with one of the engine pods mentioned in the show was never fixed. When I read your comment I spent ages finding that thread so I could point that out 😂
Pegasus redeemed her borderline criminal career post-fall by being sacrificed to take out the 3 remaining basestars that threatened the last of humanity's second exodus. Even Galactica wasn't able to accomplish that. Not the worst way to go.
I just noticed something about the Galactica and the Pegasus. The Galactica was designed for a much more defensive role. Seemingly having more armor and AA capabilities. Whereas the Pegasus seems faster with far greater offensive abilities. Interesting.
During the 1st Cylon war, Galactica and the other Jupiter class Battlestars were built as a proof of concept/bribe to the colonies to sign the Articles. As the war progressed, the Jupiter's often had extra weapon systems bolted to any available space. After the war, the Colonial Military scaled back significantly for a while (Tighs memories of meeting Adama aboard the freighter) after life stabilized in the post war Era new classes like the Mercurys and Valkyries were developed with the plan of having an entire BSGroup act as a rapid response unit. Valkyrie class battlestars were essentially missile destroyers while Mercurys were more along the lines of dreadnoughts
Only issue is galactica was de armored partially before being decomissioned. It wasnt fully armored in the show unfortunatly. But i agree the older style battlestars seemed more like powerhouse defensive ships. Although we do see the batteries on top of the ship being able to shoot basestars with kenetic weapons at great distances. Im not sure really which ship was better honestly. I think pegasis though was more offensive like you said
@@hectoraracena9631 i latwr learned galactica had half its offensiive battsries removed too not just the armor.. pics of galactica in the flash back movies.. Show it having 2-3x more guns than just 6-8 it has in the normal series. Imagine if it had all its weapons
@@jeepsblackpowderandlights4305 Another thing to mention is that even with a lot of her armor removed, Galactica still survived for ~4 years after the Fall of the Colonies. The Cylons never broke Galactica through cracking her armor, she was breaking down from metal fatigue. If her armor had not been removed and she had been a few years younger, its likely she could have fought for much much longer.
I guess everyone on those Baseships were thinking the same. But, if ask someone of the old CMD from admiral branches, can count on that they would be considering Lee as a Traitor .
I love Pegasus’s end not that it ended but how it took out a few basestars in a few minutes and in it’s final moments rammed a basestar and the flight pod just as a final FU to the Cylons 4:18 is one of my favorite clips the music choices.

The problem is that on the way to earth it was PERFECT for the colonials' situation. Sure it would've ended up in the sun anyway but it was also better suited for the Fleet's situation than galactica.
@@josephbondoc2561 Yes. Galactica had Plot Armor. They could've at least had both escape. Lee had the fleet hidden in a nebula, he could've taken most of his fighters with him.
Spacedock's video kinda just glosses over the entire affair. There are major flaws with his plans as well, including an incredulous Raptor yolo nuclear assault on two basestars which had their Raider complement. Raptors would have been destroyed before getting close to the Basestar. Colonials didn't know there were four Basestars instead of two, so any plans before that point are moot. The situation *really starts* when four mega-toasters rock up instead of two, Galactica has taken heavy damage and Pegasus jumps into the fight crippling a mega-toaster in the process. The main issue is that there was no way to extricate from the situation without losing a vessel, two if the Colonials weren't careful. The Galactica is going to be destroyed, the Pegasus cannot hold off four Basestars by themselves and flak isn't a perfect shield. The Colonials aren't here to win the Battle of New Caprica and take it back, they're here to buy time for the civilian vessels to escape. Losing the strategically superior warship to preserve the superior command was the better long-term call, especially since the latter would have made better decisions than the one who authorized the former.

I can still remember when I first watched this episode and there was that moment where I really thought Galactica was going to be destroyed. It was a mix of disbelief and bewilderment, but then Lee came along and saved the day, I think that was Lee's coolest move in the entire series.
I haven't seen enough of this show to say I'm a true fan, but seeing Apollo thank the ship before evacuating really struck a nerve with me, it almost brought me to tears. It was so satisfying seeing her obliterate those Cylon ships in the end.
For those criticizing lee for sacrificing a superior ship to save ‘the bucket’, I hear you. But also remember that the last stand of Pegasus also kept the cylons distracted long enough for civilian ships on the ground to load up and evacuate before the bulk of the Cylon forces had time to redeploy and focus on what was going on down there. Galactica likely wouldn’t have held out much longer on her own, and if Lee hadn’t showed up then the base stars may very well have wiped out many of the civilian ships attempting to flee in a bombardment from orbit. Lee saved his father as well as the shows namesake ship, but he also likely saved many ships and thousands of civilian and insurgents on the ground as well. With humanity on the brink of extinction, all the lives saved were priceless and worth laying it all down for. As I said before, I don’t believe Galactica was in good enough shape to hold out as long as Pegasus did, especially not after that atmospheric free fall. Looking at it objectively, it had to go down like this. And let’s be honest, Pegasus made the cylinders pay one hell of a heavy price for their victory. If any of you follow ‘The Expanse’, you’ll know that James Holden essentially did this in season 5 episode 10 when he put his ship into battle up against 5 Free Navy ships. He and his ship survived by dumb luck from a mutiny within the Free Navy task force, but he had still been willing to make the sacrifice to keep the military ships distracted while his crew on an unarmed ship got away. Like I said, look at it objectively and consider the big picture. I hated losing the Pegasus, but I know that Lee did the right thing all and all and I accept it.
Lee did the right thing not saying lee is a great commander but he knew his dad was better Lee is one of my favs in this show this also sad cause I like Pegasus she was my fav besides Valkyrie
Well technically a Jupiter class MK2 (Galactica class) can outright wipe 2 basestars with ease (abit hard without vipers compliments), and now you have the Pegasus which outright mop the floor with enemies basestars and the ship is outright a beast in it own
The ascription of any particular tactic in warfare as 'terrorist' could be a) accurate (the tactic instills terror) or b) propaganda (the other guy does the bad stuff). In war, there are tactics which preserve your own force structure and attrit the enemies, and there are tactics that cost you too many of your own for questionable attrition among the enemy. Once you've chosen to fight and that the fight is existential, then to tie your hands behind your back by curtaining off strategies that could lead to victory might just be immoral. That's not so true if the fight is not existential (win or die). But with the Cylons and the Colonials, the conflict had moved into what appears to be a war of extinction. Both sides would look to any sort of tactic or strategy that could weaken the enemy without costing too many friendly lives/vessels to be lost. The Cylons are not motivated by notions of 'humanity' or 'compassion' nor are they likely to eschew cost effective or efficient strategies simply because they seem horrific to human values. And the humans are quite willing to do horrific things to survive (Season 1 : '33').
@@ghandimauler Yet I think to remember the main driving force behind the near extinction of the humans was Cavil's hatred. And speaking of horrible things - it was again Cavil's hatred that also sparked the Cylon civil war.

Idk why but I always found 0:55 to be the coolest part of the scene I've never seen a battle portrayed as being so desperate that the commander of the ship is repairing the bridge mid-firefight
Honestly, this was probably one of the best ways the writers could remove the Pegasus from the show. Command decisions from Lee aside, having it go out in a blaze of glory to the sound of war drums was visually and emotionally spectacular. Plotwise though, this was really a victory for the Cylons. Sure, they lost a few Basestars and the civilian fleet got away, but the Galactica suffered irreparable damage and the Fleet lost one of the two Battlestars defending it, taking with it their capability to produce additional strike craft. Adding on to that was the fact that the Pegasus was the only fully functional warship they had since the Galactica only had one flight pod and was missing a majority of its arms and armor. If it hadn't been for the Cylon Civil War, I'm not sure Galactica would've made it to Earth.
@@null643 The New Caprica arc was probably the highlight of the two because it still felt like Battlestar Galactica. Then they started leaning heavily on the one true god thing and it just went downhill from there.
Yeah, I also felt like this was more of a Cylon victory than a Colonial one. If they only destroyed the Resurrection Ship, maybe Pegasus's sacrifice would've been better.
If the Pegasus was to live and Galactica die then the Pegasus wouldnt be as strong as it would be because before the operation most of Pegasus crew were transfered to Galactica leaving Pegasus having only a "skeleton" crew left to barely even keep it functional
@@Mobius_118 oh... i didnt know that there are crews of both battlestars were on New Caprica, i thought there are only civillians Thanks for explaining
Honestly, if the budget didn't require them to destroy Pegasus, it would have been cool to see how she would have played into the story going into the rest of the series. That being said, if I have to play Devil's advocate for why Lee's decision to throw the Pegasus away made at least SOME sense, I would guess that it came down to a numbers game. Galactica simply held more people including crew and pilots and the loss of them would be a blow in terms of people and leadership that the colonials would never recover from. That and considering most of Galactica's resources were devoted to the evacuating the civilians, it's highly unlikely there were enough Raptors available to evacuate all of Galactica's personnel in the event things went sideways. Pegasus, being newer and more advanced, could far more easily run on a skeleton crew capable of fitting into four Raptors. Plus, there's at least some evidence to indicate that if Pegasus didn't show up, the Cylons simply destroy Galactica and then move on to the Civilian ships before they can even get off the ground. Helo says as much when Pegasus appears and takes the heat off of them. So if the calculus is that Pegasus survives but Galactica and none of the civilians do, I guess the choice makes sense if sacrificing Pegasus means the civilians and Galactica get to escape. That being said, if I'm Lee in this situation, I'm rolling the dice and taking all my planes with me, maybe leaving a few behind to guard the safe bet civilians. But overall, if I'm ignoring orders and taking my ship to the heart of the action, I'm not going halfway. Bring the Viper wings, the heavy Raptors, arm the nukes. At the very least, utilize the element of surprise to disable more than just one Basestar. Jump in with a full salvo from Pegasus's heavy forward batteries as well as a potential nuclear strike and get ride of as many ships as possible. If I manage to outright destroy two Basestars before they get a chance to look at me, the fight's already won. If Galactica could realistically hold off two Basestars, then Pegasus could do it easily. And even damaged, Galactica and Pegasus against two Basestars is a fight the Cylons just lose. Plus if Pegasus survives to make it to Earth, the Battle of the Ionian Nebula plays out very differently, the later politics don't play out nearly the same, and the Galactica's decay isn't as crippling to both military strength and fleet morale if Pegasus is still around. The Rebel Basestar probably still gets integrated into the fleet but I severely doubt Gaeta's mutiny plays out nearly the same way. I could easily see the Battle of the Colony still happening with Galactica going out on one last mission while Pegasus stays behind. Lee probably still goes with Galactica and his father on that mission and leaves Hoshi as Admiral only with Pegasus under his command instead.
Pegasus surviving would have changed things even more drastically I'd argue. Once the resurrection hub went down in that joint strike I'd argue the human fleet would have been likely a match for most Cylon task forces trying to attack them. Galactica, Pegasus and the Baseship with wings of fighters would have been formidable. It would have at least put the Cylons on even more of a back foot than they already were. Plus if Galactica didn't sustain the damage during Exodus then the Cylon goo might have actually healed her properly and the ship would have lived on.
@danielc2701 that was a convenient parallel but that was not the reason why they did it. That being said, I can easily see them destroying it in later seasons but the real IRL reason they got rid of it was it was just too expensive to keep around.
@@TheAndroidNextDoor Let me put it this way, even if they had the budget for it, the Pegasus was still fated to be destroyed because that was what happened to it in the original series and this is the "reimagined" series, not "rewritten" series. The Pegasus was doomed since 1984.
When the camera pulls back to show the scale of the beating Galactica is taking, and then suddenly... Phoow phoow.... Those front batteries of Pegasus are something else
The beating a Battlestar can take is amazing for sure. We watched as Galactica had been pummeled on multiple occasions, surviving nukes at the worst, and yet she kept on trucking. Those ships would be a marvel of human ingenuity if real...
I think it's also down to what alloys and metals their hulls were made of. If a ship like Galactica can tank a nuke, then she's made quite literally of some REALLY tough stuff we don't have here on Earth.
Why wouldn't the Vipers have defended the Pegasus and then landed back on the Pegasus? The Galactica could have jumped away and the Vipers could buy time for the Pegasus to get her own FTL drive back online?
That camera pull to galactic getting pummeled in the nothingness of space, is legit one of the best scenes in SiFi tv history

As much as I love this scene. How about this?
Scenario 1 - Both Battlestars take part in battle from start
Scenario 3 - Same as above, but with change

Later in the series Laura Roslin says to Lee that he is so hell-bent on doing the right thing that he forgets to do the smart thing. That's probably the best example of that. Who wouldn't sacrifice anything to save their Father?
@@jamiestewart48 A father wouldnt want his son to sacrifice himself for him.

Since his father did make messed up move of using an old battlestar and just put it on falling down an orbit to drop out vipers when he could have just send an assault raptors team which wouldnt have caused the ship to be damage that badly (i would justify the sending an old battlestar instead of a better one by the fact that they thought there are only 2 basestars) so in the end, i think Lee just done the best move he could to save his father and a massive amount of lifes that would have been lost along with the remaining fleet (like you said) and cause the Pegasus to not function as well as it was show (since Pegasus lost 350ish crew before it reunite with the fleet and now losing half of what left of it crew)
I remember seeing this as it aired - it was the most epic thing I'd ever seen on TV.

Almost fifteen years since this episode aired and I still get choked up watching the final charge of the Battlestar Pegasus. What a worthy ending.
One of the most stirring, exciting space battle scenes EVER on tv :)
I can hear Daniel from Spacedock face-palming after watching this video
What did I just say!?
@@2KOOLURATOOLGaming you tell me
Spacedock's video kinda just glosses over the entire affair.
@@aegisghost exactly. i love daniel's work but he was so wrong in that video. he gets fixated on the battle and forgets the war. Pegasus being sacrificed gives time for the civilians and adama and his crew to be saved.
@@aegisghost Colonials DID know about more basestars. When they were leaving New Caprica,it was shown that there were 5 basestars. But you're be right, nuclear raptor assault might've not worked.
Although, I don't understand the decision by Lee to leave his birds behind. They can't defeat basestars on their own. They can defend the fleet from raiders and missles, but only once, cause they cannot jump. Some could manage to land on civilian ships, but that's about it.

The most emotional scene from BSG for me... I literally get teary eyes everytime
Me too.Glad I wasn't the only one.
1:50 the soft, grim music while BSG gets pummeled in deep space, and then the missiles coming into the shot. The director and writers are clearly sci fans having fun with their jobs.
I love how the Battlestars aren’t shielded. They take the hits on the armor and they quite clearly can take one hell of a pounding.
A real shame that there will be no more after Galactica.
Well, if you want some nice, meaty space battles, you'll probably enjoy The Expanse.
Base star could never stand up to the punishment a Battle star can. Look at Galactica, the old girl has been through hell multiple times & survived. Toe to toe battle & a battle star will win every single time. Two base stars against one battle star & they would still lose. Base star is no match for a Battle star
@alastairmcgregor8080 and keep in mind. I think galactica had her Armour slowly stripped away while she was gonna be retired.retires. so when this happens she has large portions of her Armour gone....
I’m a Starfleet Officer and personally I’d have shields, ablative armor and adaptive regeneration shields… put the FTL drive in a safer buffer to protect it, and sniper gun pods to do full barrage strikes on the bow and stern of the ship..
@@alastairmcgregor8080 that because basestar are more missile platforms designed to wipe out the colonies, the fact they never adapted and created heavily armed warships to counter the galatica show how limited the cylons strategic thinking was

Myguy. Yeah I agree. Even ever re-watch of the series I long to get to the New Cap segment.
Yes, Galatical jumping into the ATMO and Vipers launching in ATMO is difficult to beat.
The ramming capabilities of the Battle Stars is difficult to beat.
The strangest part is that two of the most highly rated episodes in BSG were when the Pegasus arrived and when it was destroyed (both only being topped by the Season 3 finale).
@@drx1xym154 Yes I love it when Hotdog is like "well, this is going to be different" as the Vipers launch. Then watching the Galactica jump is amazing!
@@Mobius_118 Not really surprising, the corresponding episodes on Original 1978 BSG were also the highest rated. It's a great concept.
I can still remember when I first watched this episode and there was that moment where I really thought Galactica was going to be destroyed. It was a mix of disbelief and bewilderment, but then Lee came along and saved the day, I think that was Lee's coolest move in the entire series.
This was the most awesome and epic moment in the whole series along with the giga masterpiece of a soundtrack.
I haven't seen enough of this show to say I'm a true fan, but seeing Apollo thank the ship before evacuating really struck a nerve with me, it almost brought me to tears. It was so satisfying seeing her obliterate those Cylon ships in the end.
Gotta love that last Middle Finger by Pegasus, Two Mega-Toasters dead by one ship!

Dualla looks awesome in that uniform.
Your military advisors are good. I worked in CIC in the Navy. Well done.
Watched all the series of this - enjoyed it - Adama - "we cant hold off four base ships" - Pegasus comes in 👍
For those criticizing lee for sacrificing a superior ship to save ‘the bucket’, I hear you.
You have to admit Lee paid a heavy price cause she was his ship but had to pay it to save his dad and his crew and ship
Except if he hadn't decided to hang back at first, they could have properly coordinated and not lost either ship.
Lee did the right thing not saying lee is a great commander but he knew his dad was better Lee is one of my favs in this show this also sad cause I like Pegasus she was my fav besides Valkyrie
If they would have used the Galactica as the bait she would have given just as much and the still would have had the peaguses

That look of absolute terror at 1:09 is perfectly done, they both knew it was game over, If the Pegasus didn't intervene they'd be dusted
For me this proves one thing: Even in a fair fight the toasters would've been scrapped.
That's why they had to resort to terrorist tactics.
@@ghandimauler your whole argument is invalid. The cylons obviously have attained self sufficiency and had the option to just go anywhere.
They attacked the colonies because they wanted to. THAT is what makes em terrorists.
@@henrycooper3431 yes - well that is all good - though that presumes they have regular use of refule/resupply and semi-regular maintenance. Even Galatica had to stop at Ragnar to supply (since it was soon to be decommissioned).

I remember watching the original series as a kid and seeing the pegasus do it's thing.. man it made my day
Fat Lee and Mustache Adama. Love it! Favorite show of all time.
@@henrycooper3431 Most of the crew from the two Battlestars were on New Caprica. It's why they needed to transfer crew from one to the other.

It's not the budget, the original series also had the Pegasus destroyed taking down 2 base stars so they had to follow that.
The musical score on this show was so perfect.
When the camera pulls back to show the scale of the beating Galactica is taking, and then suddenly...
Phoow phoow....
Those front batteries of Pegasus are something else
The final actions of the Pegasus epitomize the phrase "Give 'em hell !!"
Seeing Dualla brings a tear to my eye, just knowing what happens
I just love the phrase "Combat landings authorized" and all of them scrambling for the port bay.
Why wouldn't the Vipers have defended the Pegasus and then landed back on the Pegasus? The Galactica could have jumped away and the Vipers could buy time for the Pegasus to get her own FTL drive back online?
The music absolutely makes this scene... So good...
