  • Blue badges are a lifeline for me and many other disabled drivers and passengers. They allow me to park in accessible bays and, in some cases, mean exemptions from charges. Unfortunately, this also makes them attractive to thieves, and I have had my badge stolen multiple times. It's frustrating as it has left me without a car, increased my outgoings, and made me unable to live independently.
I’ve always wanted to find a better solution to the current blue badge scheme in the UK, and I went to Haringey Council to learn about their virtual permit, which has successfully decreased blue badge theft rates by 65%!
However, I recognise that there are some drawbacks to the virtual permit scheme, such as the digital exclusion for some disabled people. We need to find a solution that works for everyone, including those who may not have access to digital technology.
We deserve to feel safe using our hard earnt rights without having to resort to chaining our blue badges to our vehicles. We need a solution that prevents blue badge thefts and helps us feel confident and protected.
