Because the first sentence translation is: that banana is long and green. translation of second sentence is: and that small ship is blue. Notice that the words after "is" are "khabar".
I got confused at first about this also until I checked out his flashcards that accompany the Gateway Series. For instance, a peach and an onion are feminine words. Apparently, there are a few mistakes in the book. My # is 7329107589. I can send you a picture of the cards to illustrate what I mean.

why is he making some of the nouns feminine? this is really confusing me. In the book the nouns are masculine.

Its moy confusing because nouns have genders in Arabic. There are feminine nouns too if you have actually learned it
