Twickenham's volume always kicked up a notch when he got the ball. The South Africa 36-0 hiding was a great game where he kept fighting and punching until his hamstring gave up. Really had an all court game by that point - kicking, defence, catching alongside his unbelievable step and acceleration. The Barbarians game, his final Twickenham one, felt like a fantasy with the world cup winning Springboks against a team with Giteau, Nonu, Conrad Smith, and Jason Robinson. I still can't believe I got to see Nonu, Smith, and Robinson combine and he really showed how much of a legend he was with those 2
One of the finest things I've seen in rugby is the care with which the SA players bridged over Robinson and kept him from getting bashed up when his hamstring went. Excellent sportsmanship and a real sign of respect too.
@@kuikyroje for sure I see a lot of Robinson in Cheslin and I mean that as a huge compliment. Same with Shane Williams. Cheslin's probably got a wider side step while Robinson that shotgun blast acceleration but these are the guys you show up to rugby to see.
The best back three player England ever had, every single time he had the ball in hand the volume went up, he could run faster sideways than most people could in a straight line. I was six when he scored the try against Australia, but I'll never forget my uncle leaping out of his chair and nearly putting his head through the ceiling and watching him scream come on into the Camera
Saw him as a 14 yr old playing for Hunslet Parkside, he was at scrum half, he wasn't really a winger in his early League career. That all changed when Wigan nicked him from under the noses of Leeds, couldn't blame him for signing for Wigan because they had John Monie as coach. Robinson attributes him as the best coach he ever played under. I was at Central Park for his debut in 1991, his acceleration was phenomenal such that he suffered stress fractures on his instep as a result of the force exerted. I have seen few other League players to come close to what he could do, John Ferguson, Sam Tomkins and Bevan French are the only ones that currently spring to mind. It wasn't just his speed and evasiveness but he was incredibly strong and tough to put down and his tackling was spot on. He was part of that legendary Wigan backline of Henry Paul, Va'aiga Tuigamala, Gary Connolly, Martin Offiah, Frano Botica, and Shaun Edwards.
He was an ambassador with Team UK at the 2018 Invictus Games in Sydney. He was magnificent in that role, acting as a water boy, chatting to all the athletes, in the background but always present. He and his family stayed in the athletes' hotel with us and mucked in left, right and centre. On the other hand, we saw Beckham once!
The crazy thing is by time he got to Union he had lost some of his speed and agility compared to when he was playing League at Wigan in the late 90's. The guy was a phenomenon.
The greatest off the mark, show of hand, acceleration and courage there's ever been in a winger/fullback. Still feel he doesn't get the credit he deserves. Walks into any greatest world XV easily.
The best comment I ever heard about Robinson was that as we'll as terrifying the opposition he gave cameramen whip lash trying to keep the shot on him..... absolute legend and one of the Best 👌
Only three people I’ve seen with a similar step - Cheslin, Shane Williams, and David Duckham who regularly dummied the cameraman- which happens here at around 3:42 Honourable mentions to Phil Bennett, Danie Gerber, Blanco, Serevi, Carlos S, and Jonah who in fairness was altogether a total one-off in other ways as well.
He was a remarkable athlete and by the time of 2003 he'd developed a real instinct for union too. He'd still be an incredible winger now as his 100m was still better than Jonny May's or Christian Wade's 100m times. And that's ignoring that his real talent was the step and acceleration over the first 20m.
In Rugby League was known as Billy Whizz. Remember watching him in the early 90s when he was playing for Wigan aged 17 or 18 thinking 'crikey we just dont have players like that in Union'....
He changed team's tactics, because they knew that any kick his way could get returned 30 metres or more. Lewsey added to that with his pace and willingness to run and it really helped England in the territorial game in that golden era.
An absolute marvel. He didn't step, so much as jump and skip past opponents and leave them standing with that electric turn of pace over the first 10, 20, 30 metres. His ability to find his way through and out of the tightest spaces was phenomenal. But almost unbelievably, his peak years were actually in the other code.
Yep, Jason's acceleration from standing start was staggering. He was often gone before the opposing player had time to react. And he was doing this in Rugby League where defenses were brutal and tight as a drum
I’m old enough to have seen some brilliant British wingers eg Gerald Davies, J.J. Williams, Ieuan Evan’s and Andy Irvine, but considering Robinson came so late to the game and kicking was not in his skill set, I would say he’s the best I’ve seen in the U.K. Certainly, the most exciting.
I know a lot of people would say Wilkinson is England's greatest ever player. But for me, this guys is the greatest rugby player this country's ever produced, probably in both codes. An absolute phenomenon
Probably England's best ball carrying back of all time. His confidence and ability getting the ball in his own half and just being able to change a game was second to literally no-one
English rugby teams of old knew how to play physically no need to over offload- just run with ball in hand and maul. Robinson is a bit like Feyi - Waboso for England under Borthwick, being in obviously the same position at wing.
We were awful 04-07 and for the years after bar 2011 six nations, plucky 2nd placers between 2012-2015, then a decent side 2016-19. Jason Robinson was one of the finest to play but England were mainly dominant 01-03
@@johnmitchell2269 and were 4th that year's 6 nations, conceded 50+ points over a few tests that summer to SA, mauled 36-0 in the group stages. We weren't world beaters for sure
Second French try in the montage. If you see a wider angle only 2 Englishmen on that side. Ball has gone the wrong way, totally outnumbered. And then Robinson doesn't something that should have been impossible.
This video shows just how much better rugby league is than union. He was a very good player whilst playing league for Wigan. Then he slowed down a bit and switched codes and became an outstanding player.
And this is just the second half of his dual-code career… some of his runs and tries for Wigan in rugby league were incredible as well.
Yeh this doesn't do him justice at all
More incredible tries when he played for Wigan Warriors, beat the best of NRL in their own back yard. Such a dynamic player ⚡

Thank you for putting this vid up. Growing up heard of this guy how good he was in his days of rugby.
Very fast yes, but what really gets me is the acceleration - he's 0-60 faster than just about any player I've ever seen
then you havent seen alot of players\
I think Cheslin Kolbe is probably the most comparable winger we've seen

Never get tired of that run against Wales in the QF. Turned the game around.

One of the greatest rugby players of both rule sets. Feet of lightening, heart of a lion and an all round great guy.

Jason,Josh and Ben were an amazing back three for the Poms
Pocket rocket and a gentleman to boot.
He never swore.
This man had real gas to score many run away tries jason robinson does deserve his fkowers for being the fastest english winger in the 00's

No apostrophe in Evans.
Fantastic athlete, he had blistering pace and amazing, natural rugby ability in either code ⚡
He was fastest man during this time ⚡️⚡️⚡️
He actually looks like he's running too fast for his legs to keep up. Energy personified
I know a lot of people would say Wilkinson is England's greatest ever player. But for me, this guys is the greatest rugby player this country's ever produced, probably in both codes. An absolute phenomenon
Richard Hill for me.
Good compilation, it shows some of his great tackles too. Essential part of a back 3 role often overlooked.
Now we want his highlights in Wigan rugby league !! Please !
It'd last a month 😂
Greatly loved and England’s all time most exciting rugby player
The wasn’t prime Robinson, this was Robinson in his latter career years. You should see his Rugby League career highlights. Absolute rocket.
If the union team had him in his prime England would have been unstoppable
He was a bit faster perhaps early on, but he had more craft to his game by this point. His all-round game was more advanced.
Yes I remember his try for Wigan in the Twickenham sevens . It opened a few eyes to the potential of league players in Union.
"AH, HE'S GASSED THEM!" Maybe my favourite piece of commentary. Robbo was absolute box office.
The mention of Simpson-Daniel and how often did Robinson play alongside him because they were both massively talented.
He's the reason why the shirts aren't baggy anymore 😂. What a player!
As good as he was in union he was epic in league for Wigan
Best English winger seen in league or union
Breathtaking to watch! What an athlete !
Would dominate in all eras
Absolute legend
Probably England's best ball carrying back of all time. His confidence and ability getting the ball in his own half and just being able to change a game was second to literally no-one
Had the pleasure of watching JR play for my team, Sale back in the day, when we were most successful.
Easily the best import from League
Imagine Jason Robinson as a running back in the @NFL
They dont make them like him anymore 😄😄
I’ll always remember where I was for that try against Australia.
One rugby player that I’d liked to have watched live
That opening clip took me rght back to Rugby 08! Thank you
He’d have made one hell of a running back
It's the fact he'd cut one angle that would slice a whole team in half. Like that one step against Wales in the quarter final
Fuck me, he was absolutely rapid in his prime!
At the height of his powers he was a top 5 in both codes. A legend in both.
Robinson wasn’t in his prime when he played Union, he was at his peak when playing Rugby League for Wigan
Never clicked so fast upon seeing a video title
Fantastic highlights. No wonder they called him 'Billy Whizz'!
Its a shame theres not many clips of him playing for Sale online
@@AdTurnerr yeah real shame I couldn’t find much - pre 2009 there’s a real lack of footage it’s very frustrating

Prime Jason Robinson was at Wigan ,where i watched him regularly.
Probably Englands best Rugby winger behind Martin Offiah
He's acceleration is crazy
The prototype player for Cheslin Kolbe.
He was soo good defensively too
He could run sideways faster than most running ahead.
Not prime here… prime was at Wigan where he would go the full length of field.
It feel like I'm seeing the credits of Rugby08
The step at 0:24 is unreal.
Excellent in defence too.
It looked as if the Camera was in fast motion on Jason and Normal speed on everyone else.
Forgot about him he was an absolutely class exciting player
A good Leeds lad 👍👍👍
Cheslin Kobe is the second coming of Jason Robinson
You're having a laugh, aren't you?

He’s rapid and goes from 0 to 100

Jason Robinson, Ben Cohen, Josh Lewsey, Mark Cueto, James Simpson-Daniel, Ian Balshaw.

Entrance fee alone, bums on seats!!!

Faster than kolbe
Just lacked a touch of pace.
