    i once lost my air plant for two weeks. i found it in a bucket of water outside. honestly its never looked better. it probably preferred the unforgiving slow drowning of a cold bucket of water then my loving embrace. so many tears

    I submerged my Tillandsia Xerographica (big guy) and afterwards I even tried drying it out with a blow drier and left it upside down for a while but it started rotting :C
    I found out because today I tried vaporizing it and the leaves weren't turning green as usual, but the tips were yellowish, softer and weak.
    I submerged it because I thought it was looking too dry but achieved the opposite effect, avoid submerging your xerographica!
    Its base is different from other air plants and it is easier for water to remain inside it.
    Only vaporize it every now and then with mineral water..
    I tried removing all the rotten leaves from the base and the inside seems still green and healthy but it's very weak and I'm not sure it will recover. I hope it gets better.

    I was recently gifted an air plant that is partially placed in a shell. I've only misted it so far as I'm worried bathing it in water will collect and create mold in the shell. It is a beautiful display, but I'm not experienced in their care. All the resources I've found are showing plants without displays.

    I loved this! I do have some questions. The only windows I have are both North-West windows, but the way my apartment building is structured I get mostly filtered light. I have to totally open up my blinds and curtains to make sure my indoor plants get enough light. Do you think air plants could live with this kind of lighting? Also, what other plants do you suggest for a very low light apartment? Please and thank you~ :)

    • @HousePlantJournal
      @HousePlantJournal  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Karichi Du Soleil Thank you! Exactly how much light is "low light" for you? There are light meter apps for your phone that can help you determine exactly how much light you're getting (I'm going to make a video about that soon). If you're getting around 50-100 foot-candles at the brightest point of the day right at the window, then that's definitely low light. For this situation, I suggest snake plants (many different kinds), pothos, philodendron (several types), and zz plant. Hope this helps :)

    Here's a tip if you bought any air plants from Lowe's. If they come attached to what looks like moss, it's most likely lichen and lichens are very acidic. So watering both the lichens and air plants attached to each other probably isn't good.

      +she7 if you already have rot there's not much you can do to reverse it. The best thing to do would be to prevent it: water it thoroughly but be sure to let it dry off completely; make sure it gets BRIGHT indirect light (even a bit of direct sun in the morning is okay)

  • @paulanderson1962
    @paulanderson1962 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dunno about the watering. I suppose most ways won't hurt them (indeed I put two in the water to soak and they look better) but in it's natural environment they are not aquatic plants. They don't go for baths in the rain-forest, they never get immersed in water, so why do that in the domestic care? They get moisture from mist. And presumably also from rain. So I would imagine a better and certainly more authentic way (true to natural conditions) is to give them a shower with a small house plant watering can.
