Rahdo, thank you for your wonderful review and for playing Pirates! I'm happy you loved the game. While we acknowledge that the dice roll introduces some randomness, we decided to include it as it adds an element of luck that aligns well with the pirate theme. With six die rolls, you are likely to get at least one higher number. I’m glad you tried out the Fog of War variant. I personally also enjoy the uncertainty it brings, which gives me a sense of exploration. As reviews are going very well for Pirates, there might be an expansion in the future. So if you, Richard, or anybody else has wishes, just let us know here or elsewhere.
@@rahdo Fog of war is such cool element. And I know there will be many min/maxers that will complain:D I guess the tableau could get bigger here. In MC you could stack the cards that only lower part is shown. Right here main ability is in center. Overall... I'm sailing to Carribeans soon:D EDIT: And I'm waiting for Kraken promo/expansion;D
Hey, I've pre-ordered this from my local game store (UK) he says the games are still in a container in Germany, figuring out a cheap way of getting to the UK, what's the news of it getting here? Before Christmas? 😅
well i did a video on that very topic here: th-cam.com/video/tbuXaVAd6wo/w-d-xo.html but it is an exclusive for backers of the show... long story short 2/3rds of the 58 games + expansions are in the cabinets above the bed, and the other third are underneath the bed) :)
Thanks for the videos, I always find yours enjoyable and informative, they really give a good idea of the game flow, which is just what I was hoping for for this one (particularly solo), since I have - and love - Maracaibo and wasn't sure if I wanted/needed "another one" - though your video makes it clear that the two games are sufficiently different enough to justify having both. One thing I thought was odd, though, was the short "rant" about the colonization aspect of Maracaibo, which you made clear was a part you didn't like about the original, but at the same time you didn't express any objection to pirates themselves, even though they were at least as harmful to the Caribbean inhabitants as the colonists, with their kidnapping, pillaging, murdering, and generally making sailing those waters dangerous.
there's a big difference between systemic society wide oppression from stronger external forces enslaving entire societies, vs violent thieves plundering and killing individual ships. and fortunately we don't romanticize colonialism the same way we do piracy
@@rahdo lmao, are you claiming pirates didn't partake in slavery and its trade? And "plundering and killing individual ships"? Pirates attacked settlements and cities all the damn time, including in Maracaibo. Get off your high horse chief
@@rahdo no, you just downplayed pirates doing the same thing the "evil" colonists did over an issue of scale which is incredibly disingenuous. I mean, I get it and you wrote it yourself, the pirate lifestyle of the time is indeed romanticized - the cool hats, the eye patches, the freedom, this idea of adventurous exploration of the seas and undiscovered lands - but let's not pretend they weren't equally as bad, sometimes even worse. Point being: life at the time was the way it was with some conquering and some being conquered, some pillaging and some being pillaged. My criticism of your stance comes not from a lesser of two evils choice but from your (in my opinion) hypocritical stance on the subject. I appreciate the input of the video regardless, might get both eventually since I agree with Warren and you that both games are different enough to justifgy grabbing both. Take care.
@@JLDP666 what i said was that the impact of pirates (which was certainly terrible in many ways on a more localized level) can in no way compared to the HUGE impact of societal suffering instituted by the state. the two are incomparable in terms of how much human suffering they can cause, spread over generations. pirates were scumbags, no doubt, and it's reasonable to argue that the romanticism around them started by treasure island is misplaced. i wouldn't and didn't argue against that. my point was there's a grand canyon sized gulf between the harm they did (and do) vs the harm that the institution of slavery and colonialism did (and do).
I disagree about what you said the dice rolling is bad. First, let me say I enjoy this game a lot! As in a pirate life not everything goes well , so, in Maracaibo, some parts goes according to your plan and some part is just luck. Also, as in pirates life , you need to improvise ( meaning to change your plan ) when someone “ stealing “ your card. After all, it’s a pirate game and that is why it’s more enjoyable when the dice roll gives you a treasure 😊. This game It’s not all about winning but to be part of this journey.
"So many other people have done demos of it"... interesting. This is the first time I've even heard of the game ("Pirates of", not regular Maracaibo). And, I'm curious when is it going to come out for purchase?

i agree... the dice rolling feels very appropriate for this faster, lighter roller coaster of an experience! :)

Thank you Rahdo for your first runthrough on the road.
He loves every game
and yet you posted this on a video where i explained why the game wasn't a keeper for us
Having myself done some traveling in an RV, I’d like to know where you found room to store a mountain of games.
