  • We present a first-time reaction to Sympathy for the Devil and Honky Tonk Women, two of the biggest songs by The Rolling Stones. These were singles from 1969, even though one of the tracks appears on Beggars Banquet. We get to see The Stones on The Ed Sullivan Show, and it is also our first time hearing covers by Guns N' Roses and Prince!
This is Dev's first time listening to these songs. We are re-experiencing classic rock music, an album at a time, with fresh perspectives and active ears, so that Dev can learn and appreciate this music more, and so that Mike can relive his childhood.
    00:00 - Introduction
01:10 - Sympathy for the Devil
    11:35 - Honky Tonk Women
    16:02 - Prince cover

If you didn't live through the 1960s, you may need some history books to understand what was happening -- especially all the riots and political assassinations. By about 1968, when Beggar's Banquet came out, the poop seriously hit the fan.

Keith’s guitar solo and riffs in this never get old, nasty and tasteful at the same time.

In 1989 I went to my first Stones Show in Dallas. At the time I thought it could very well be the only chance I would ever get to see them due to their advanced age. Forward to 2024, I am one week away from seeing them for the 5th time. I can't wait and the anticipation is intense. This time will most likely be the last time I see them ...........again.

That guitar solo in SFTD is pure evil. But in a good way.

Back in the 70's my brother played in a rock cover band in South Buffalo, NY. They played exclusively in all the working class dive bars filled with very rough crowds. It seemed like every time they played a Stones song a fight or brawl would break out. The bouncers had their hands full. Numerous times the police were called to restore order. The Stones will do that.

The Story about the tongue logo is that Mick Jagger saw a photo of Kali the Hindu God of death and destruction who is usually portrayed with her tongue sticking out. He went to a young graphic designer and that is what was produced.
It’s my understanding the Stones played
Honkytonk Women live to an empty studio and when it was broadcast audience screams were added to cover up any questionable lyrics which annoyed Mick Jagger.

Sympathy for the Devil was influenced by the decadent/symbolist 19th century French poet Charles Baudelaire's 'Les Fleurs du mal' - Flowers of Evil, and is based on the book, 'The Master and Margarita', written during the Stalinist era by Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov. The story concerns a visit by the devil to the officially atheistic Soviet Union. The Master and Margarita combines supernatural elements with satirical dark comedy and Christian philosophy, defying categorization within a single genre. Many critics consider it to be one of the best novels of the 20th century, as well as the foremost of Soviet satires.
Sympathy for the Devil is considered one of the 60's greatest counterculture songs of dread and should be viewed as a companion piece to the Stones apocalyptic Gimme Shelter, Street Fighting and Dylan's/Hendrix All Along the Watchtower. These song represent the revolutionary turbulence taking place in the West in 1968. Sympathy is a song of dread and foreboding that represents the dark side of the 60's.
    The lyrics:
    'I watched with glee
    While your kings and queens
    Fought for ten decades
    For the gods they made'
A reference to The Hundred Years' War a series of armed conflicts between the kingdoms of England and France during the Late Middle Ages.
As for Jagger's voice it's fabulous, perfect for the song, a mixture of hauteur, contempt, derision and mockery filtered through a camp Dylanesque Blues drawl; perfect for the character of Lucifer, 'A man of wealth and taste.'

They did not always play live in TV shows - while technically true - would be better phrased as: they almost *never* played live in TV shows back then. AFAIK it was mainly due to the fact that it was very time consuming to get a decent audio with the 'primitive' and clumsy equipment back then ...

Ed Sullivan didn't trust them to not use fowl or offensive language. Johnny Cash wouldn't change Kris Kristofferson's lyrics.

Couple of things... the improvised sounding lead guitar licks on Sympathy sound suspiciously like they're played by a known Stones friend and studio musician, none other than the devil himself, James Patrick Page. Maybe he appears in a secret, uncredited capacity? Seems like something the devil would do. Just listen to his soloing a decade later on "In the Evening," midway through the song and specifically at th-cam.com/video/afEipftwkn4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5oBlpzgIaiN9nwap&t=359 where there is an exact lick lifted from Sympathy. Perhaps the one time Jimmy stole from himself instead of someone else.
Then, regarding Honky Tonk Women, I read something in a magazine, back in the 90's, that claimed Keith came up with the riff to Start Me Up while messing around, playing the Honky riff backwards.
    Sidenote: Boobs... boobs... boobs...

The “Jimmy Page played the ‘Sympathy’ solo” is just a ridiculous, fabricated lie with absolutely zero merit behind it. Some say Jagger yells “Jimmy!” before the solo, but he's clearly not. Even if he did say “Jimmy,” he's referring to their producer, Jimmy Miller, not Jimmy Page.

The answer that most miss is in one line near the end amongst the woo-woo's "I'll tell you one time Your the one to Blame " ?? He's Saying the Devil is like a Scapegoat taking the blame for ALL Mankinds Missdeads?? Unfortunately this is somthing that groups like Guns & Roses who are so full of themselves that they don't notice? & fail misserably to grasp the songs meaning? This also goes for the "GOD BOTHERERS" In America's "Bible Belt" Who got their Knickers in a Twist when it was released because they Saw Devil & Instantly got the wrong Idea ?? & failed to even listen to the song or lyrics to grasp what it was about & Instantly & Ignorantly Banned It!! So much for the Teachings of Religious Tollerance?? Blinkered Minds & Selective Ideologies none of which were in the words of GOD or his Son ?? Only in the Warped Dogmas of Zealous Men for POWER,CONTROL,& The Accumulation of WEALTH !!
