Also, I would like to give that young English's speaking man a hug, who is on one of the french teams, when they only spoke french to him 🤣🤣
It is no coincidence, Jonas drops Tadej on big climbs. Whenever the road takes them above 1600-2000 meters, Jonas' performance hardly drops, whereas most everyone else's performance drops, incl. Tadej. This is the ONE advantage, Jonas has over Tadej. He's simply physically better in the high altitudes. This years TdF doesnt have a lot of VERY high altitude climbing, stage 17 being the one stage to Courchevel where Jonas has a chance of outperforming Tadej, until then, Jonas needs to hang on for dear life, imho! A nice recap though, I enjoyed it a lot! Looking forward to watching TdF 2023 with you :) 👊
Interesting point about the height. Personally I think it's either that, or Vingegaard might be slightly better than Pog when there are many difficult climbs in succession. It could very well be both: the altitude certainly makes whatever slight difference there is between those 2 bigger in terms of how much time one can get ahead. But if it's only the altitude, then Pog is the favorite this year. In this regard this Tour is gonna be very interesting to check if that's only the altitude or also the succession of difficult climbs where Vingegaard has a chance to outperform Vingegaard
@@PopCykolMotoPH Dude, as a dane, we get a shittonne of info from a super cyclingcrazed country including the media here.. esp. TV2, the official danish cycling broadcaster. There are several tv docs on Vingegaards performance in his younger years, etc... I just chose to share some of that info, which for whatever reason eludes most of the cycling-interested world! The rest is extrapolating that info and superimposing it onto this years TDF stage topology! But the level of dedication and planning/foresight on the JV team was REALLY extraordinairy!
Absolutely brilliant… awesome recap of TDF’22 thank you. Can’t wait for this year… and would dig to hear your live TV commentary on a Grand Tour one day 🫵
I'm so sorry for Tadej but I've came across Jonas near Annecy 3 days ago and the look he gave me after the little"hello" wave cyclists do was absolutely scary. He will win again this year
He’s definitely a dangerous rider. I don’t think a lot of people are giving him as much credit as they should. He’s not as “flashy” as Pog but the guy is an absolute mountain goat!
The chances of pogacar making all those same mistakes again and being overconfident, and Jumbo having a rider of Roglics quality to use up, is very small
@@HkFinn83 Bro, when you beat someone by 3 minutes, then you cannot put it on a single domestique rider. Jonas is the better pure climber, and he's the better Grand Tour rider, due to him being better at resting.
So much can happen in 3,5 weeks! Such a well made and enjoyable to watch video. Expected nothing less - LR always delivers quality content. I'm all hyped up for Le Grand Boucle already! And I cross all my fingers that no (serious) crashes will occur.
I cannot commit to watching all the stages of the race and so really look forward to your coverage. Your knowledge and expertise of the tour and the riders is second to none. I hope the tour lives up to the hype this year and can't wait to see your videos.
With Pog and Jonas tied at 1 to 1 in their TdF head to head battles, I'm hoping we see a similar slugfest this year. This could end up being a years long, epic battle.
Both guys are great for pro cycling - Jonas and Pog. It's a gonna be another great battle between them on LeTour. Whoever has the strongest and most intact team when they reach the hard mountain stages will prevail. Last year Jumbo was by far much stronger than UAE as a team. And I just hope most of the GC favorites can stay healthy and out of crash trouble.
Vingegaards chain had come off on the descent, that's why there was no resistance when he tried to pedal, which made the pedal shoot into the road almost causing him to crash.
The problem is that we don't know exactly how much better Jonas is on the big climbs. So far he has dropped him on Ventoux, Granon (first mountain stage last year) and Hautacam, and possibly he could have dropped him on Alpe d'Huez if he needed to. If the trend is that every big mountain stage results in an average of 1 minute to Jonas then the Tour will be won by Jonas. I hope for the race that Pogacar is able to defend himself in the big mountains and that the Tour may first be decided on Col de la Loze. But no matter what, I think it is hard not to call Jonas the clear favourite before the race this year as he has also looked stronger on shorter climbs. I don't think Pogi will be able to drop him once and as you mentioned in your Tour preview video, he will take a maximum of 30 bonus seconds throughout the Tour. The time trial will probably be equal (Jonas better in the third week, but UAE with better equipment this season). So Jonas will only need to drop Pogi once for him to win the tour. If this happens early, the Tour could be decided quickly, but I'm sure we will still see Pogacar trying like last year.
Pog was just worked over by 4 men, bot jonas.. Jonas beat a beaten up, exhausted pog. 1 vs 1 i think pog wins every time. But its a team event. I think pogs going to win on a classics esque stage and catch jumbo napping
@@karl8805 Pogacar was exhausted at Granon which is why he lost three minutes and also lost to other riders. If he was not more exhausted than usual after a long mountain stage he would probably still lose at least 30 seconds to a minute. This is what happened at the other big mountain battles in the second and third week so far.
I've watched the Tour for years, but last year's was one of the best imo. What a battle! I have no idea who is going to win this year, but one thing s for sure- an awful lot can happen in 3 weeks of racing. Bring it on! 🙂
pog was overextended on granon and had much lactate that hindered his full potential on the afterward stages as jonas was magnificent this year till he was overextended by pogs attack in stage 4 paris nice and he was bang average on the next stages. this tour will be an interesting dynamic
that one day doesnt have an effect on the entire tour afterwards. these guys arent like you and me. they have insane regeneration. paris-nice means nothing.
@@youbetu18 how does paris nice cant matter? jonas was putting his best numbers in the build up race at o gran camino and he was flying on stage 4 paris nice when he attacked and dropped everyone bar pog, but after pog attacked him out of sight he tried to close for about a minute and overextended himself and cracked with 2 km of climb still remaining. the lactates catch up and lost to average riders that day and he was never himself the next days. mate too much lactate is not easy to recover from even for the best riders
@@yafetasegid6488 bro really thinks lactat levels stay high when you go to your limit for days xd, also paris nice is 20 degrees colder then the tour, is a one week race and jonas did much lower numbers then befor and after that race, stop the copium
@@yafetasegid6488 im sorry but you clearly know nothing about fitness build up during a season, nor do you know anything about lactate recovery. how long have you been in this sport? go back in time and look at TdF winners and their early season accomplishments. you will see there is NO CORRELATION. literally the only issue I see, and there is a clear correlation there in the past, is that pog was injured during the most important build up phase of the season.
@@youbetu18 so smart guy. u are telling me jonas was not at top in the gran camino and especially on basque country? it seems like u'r a desperate cycling fan who only turns up for the tour
I personally thing that this tour's going to Jonas. There are less of those punchy la planche de belle filles style climbs, and theres more of the long brutal climbs with the col de la loze, puy de dome, and the grand colombier. I also believe that if jonas doesnt have yellow by stage 17, they're going to destroy pogi on the loze.
Jumbo Visma demonstrated the biggest masterclass in team tactics for bike racing. But they got away with it because their opponent is also just a guy who loves to race and will follow anything. This year though, if UAE come more prepared and out to protect Pog it may be very different.
It’s definitely a more suitable route for Pogi but then again, wrist and no lead up races. And Jonas looks even better than last year. Will be interesting 🤩
@5:18 How much energy is used by the three riders in one round of attacks (with one attacker, Pog closing, and one drafting)? Is it: Vingegaard and Roglic each spend 1 unit when attacking, and Pogacar spends 2 units when closing? Or is it more like 1.5 units for Vingegaard and Roglic, since drafting uses up 0.5 units?
Jonas has gotten better than last year. In this season he has shown multiple times that he can win on shorter punchy climbs too, even from 30k distance of the finish line. Besides freak accidents, I dont see how Pogman beats Jonas!
@@tonyg3091 So Jonas beating Pog with over 2 minutes on the hardest stage, over 1 minute on the second hardest stage and beating Pog on the TT was all because of Wout and Roglic? Pog tired himself out by attacking on the Galibier and Jonas punished him for that. Jonas will always be the best climber of the two on the long, tough climbs in a 3 week race.
@@tonyg3091I mean, if you were talking about whos the better overall rider, sure pogi is better. But when it comes to whos the better in tour de france…well jonas beat him VERY convincingly. Pogi didnt have jonas in trouble even ONCE. Never looked like he was close to cracking him.
Regarding why Pog lost the Tour in 2022: I think it was stage 11... and the crucial mistake I think Pog made was trying to counter every attack from Jumbo Visma. In my view he should have just focussed on Jonas and Jonas only. When Rog attacked... just let him go. He wouldn't have been a threat for GC at that point. I think Pog wasted too much energy countering all these attacks... probably coupled with insufficent food intake and dehydration. After that stage Jonas for the first time knew he could win against Pog and that self confidence showed in the other key stages.
5:56 this shot needed to be in the Netflix doc I think they could have talked about Pogacar more as an unbeatable force throughout the series. Painting him as someone who nobody could match. Really lean on the fact that Jonas was the underdog and that it was almost inevitable Pog will win And if they showed this shot with the narrative that even though Jumbo are throwing everything at him, double teaming, isolating him, attacking him over and over again etc he's still not only holding on but fighting back and taking on the entire Jumbo team and not losing This isn't even a lie and normies would absolutely eat that shit up. Because for me this shot convinced me Pog is unbeatable last year
It was such an amazing tour. Ridiculous. I fear I am getting a bit disappointed this year, because I will always remember how good 2022 was. Im already a bit sad that G and my beloved kämna are missing:(
One thing is often forgotten. Kämna was on the run to get the mailot jaune. Jumbo visma knew thst pogacar could fest next stages and was giving tempo so hard thar pogacar stayed in yellow with one second ahead of kämna so uae would have to Work
This comment is being written 2 days before the end of the 2023 Tour, and in many ways, this years’ Tour has been a repeat of last year’s. Tadej attacking and attacking - and then cracking in the high mountains. I am a Dane so clearly biased but I would also like an exciting Tour, and Jonas is almost scaringly strong. But: I’ll happily celebrate a Dane winning. No doubt about it.
@@NNRedemption You dumb he’s won almost every stage race he’s entered this year except paris nice where he came 3rd. Hardly call that not having a good season
Whomever wins, I have a feeling the gap between 1st and 2nd is going to be a handful of seconds. I think Pogi is coming into this TdF with a better team and better preparation compared to last year. He knows what he can expect from Jumbo, but I'm not sure Jumbo know what to expect from UAE. It's going to be an intense TdF for both teams. I just hope we have less crashes overall, and no one retiring the race due to injuries.
I fractured my left scaphoid a few years ago (same as Pogi in LBL in April, but he also fractured his lunate bone). To me, this could be the most significant limitation of his performance. Two months is not enough recovery time for him to withstand three weeks of racing. Especially sharp attacks and out-of-the-saddle work at these elite-level wattages will take their toll (let's be honest, he didn't need that for Slovenian RR and TT Champs). I hope that's not true, though and, most importantly, he won't injure himself any further with that wrist 🙏

@@cdcoop0 Probably because it was a different narrative in the show. Like they focused a lot on like the underdogs. Like Thomas, who is old, the new younger guys. The French teams. Money. They did not actually focus that much on like the individual stages.
I really would have liked to know more about the economy of the teams 🤣🤣 Also, really enjoyed getting to see the less prominent riders and what their plans were.
In this regard this Tour is gonna be very interesting to check if that's only the altitude or also the succession of difficult climbs where Vingegaard has a chance to outperform Vingegaard
you nail the stage 17 man.... got a time machine huh??
Can I get the lottery numbers? Knowledgeable man, kudos
@@69peterpumpkineater haha thx a lot! :D Nah, i'm not sharing until i flogged this horse...lol
Love the way he waited for Pogi. He is true gentleman. The absolute winner
This recap is so freaking good! Big ups!!!
He will win again this year
Maybe.
@@HkFinn83 it’s how he’s raced since he burst unto the scene.
5:57 is an epic shot. Pogi looks behind and all he sees is a jumbo army !
And now Vingegaard has won the 2023 tour! Proud to be a dane:)
This is fantastic commentary mate, well done. Really enjoyed watching this. Big fan.
😬 The TdF hype is so real right now! 📈
That Granon stage was an absolute masterpiece
I've watched the Tour for years, but last year's was one of the best imo. What a battle! I have no idea who is going to win this year, but one thing s for sure- an awful lot can happen in 3 weeks of racing. Bring it on! 🙂
Awesome coverage, I'm so psyched that I can't wait until the weekend!
last year was amazing lets hope for some more great cycling action! thanks lanterne for all the hype, you got me going haha
I will always remember the Granon stage
I enjoyed the Netflix series but man did they drop the ball on the Kuss To Wout hand off story. Epic stuff!
I thought the exact same thing when I watched it.
I love it when it is so uncertain. Pog? Jonas?..... Can't wait
This is the real Netflix documentary
Incredibly good video! So hyped for the Tour 🔥
Great video! Hopefully this uear we will continue to see a great show from these two
Your commentary is second to none.
This was a much better recap than what was provided by the Netflix documentary - great content!
van aert is such a legend i dont think he received as much credit as necessary when he helped jumbo visma out in the cobbles
Absolutely awesome video and commentary.
Consistently the best cycling highlights.
such amazing content and analysis. thank you
that van aert pull on stage 19 was epic
6:00 is the picture of TJV success 💛🖤
This is excellent content, thanks man!
This was waaaay better than the netflix thing
Stage 12 was awesome, but the whole TdF was epic! Great review.
pog was overextended on granon and had much lactate that hindered his full potential on the afterward stages as jonas was magnificent this year till he was overextended by pogs attack in stage 4 paris nice and he was bang average on the next stages. this tour will be an interesting dynamic
that one day doesnt have an effect on the entire tour afterwards. these guys arent like you and me. they have insane regeneration.
paris-nice means nothing.
Excellent recap. Thx
great video, can't wait for the tour
Great recap, getting hyped for 2023 Tour!
Netflix:
"Jasper Disaster, yes"
"True sportsmanship, no"
I personally thing that this tour's going to Jonas.
I would love to know what power Wout was making up the Hautacan
The subtitle read “Pikachu” 🥴
Better storytelling than Netflix.
2022 was such an amazing TDF...hoping 2023 has just as many exciting battles
Jonas is the man to beat this year. He is the one who can drop Pog.
Jonas for the win. Wout in green. Jumbo is unstoppable!
better than any episode of the Netflix series : ) love it, hype is up!
Jonas has gotten better than last year. In this season he has shown multiple times that he can win on shorter punchy climbs too, even from 30k distance of the finish line. Besides freak accidents, I dont see how Pogman beats Jonas!
Pogi looked alien at the start of the season but the injury could really hurt that preparation
@@PHHE1Pogi is always gonna be superior than Jonas in the spring.
You cant be serious. Jonas won last year's Tour thanks to Roglic and Wout. Don't get me wrong Jonas is pretty good but Pog is just better.
In short-Stage 11 and Stage 17.
Really excited for this Tour, can't wait to see how Sagan will crush them for that polkadot jersey.
Hahahahaha.
A truly great tour and Stage 11 was as exciting as it was epic.
Im danish and were very proud of him and his team
Jonas to win again💪
Regarding why Pog lost the Tour in 2022: I think it was stage 11... and the crucial mistake I think Pog made was trying to counter every attack from Jumbo Visma. In my view he should have just focussed on Jonas and Jonas only. When Rog attacked... just let him go. He wouldn't have been a threat for GC at that point. I think Pog wasted too much energy countering all these attacks... probably coupled with insufficent food intake and dehydration.
After that stage Jonas for the first time knew he could win against Pog and that self confidence showed in the other key stages.
Best explanaton of last years race
I think the fact that Thomas podium’ed this tour was really incredible. Very under the radar
Thx for the review💟☮️☯️
Thanks for this great recap video, Lanterne Rouge, but we already saw exactly how last years race was won on that Netflix special 🤣😂🤣😅🤣😂 😆
5:56 this shot needed to be in the Netflix doc
I think they could have talked about Pogacar more as an unbeatable force throughout the series. Painting him as someone who nobody could match. Really lean on the fact that Jonas was the underdog and that it was almost inevitable Pog will win
And if they showed this shot with the narrative that even though Jumbo are throwing everything at him, double teaming, isolating him, attacking him over and over again etc he's still not only holding on but fighting back and taking on the entire Jumbo team and not losing
This isn't even a lie and normies would absolutely eat that shit up. Because for me this shot convinced me Pog is unbeatable last year
Lovely recap of 22 GC race before we sink our teeth into the next three weeks of the biggest cycling event of the year. Bring it on!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
The team and riders strategies still sometimes escape my understanding, but the LR coverage videos are superb!
Pog for the win this year
Amazing summary.
Today Pog Gotcha‼️ 🚵🇫🇷💛
since i started watching tdf in 2016, 2022 season is the best for me.
I must have missed 2 things with the Netflix series. 1) Pog falling and Jonas waiting for him. 2) LR commentary/interview/anything on the show
Most epic sports moment of the decade for me!
I agree Jonas waiting for Pogi should be included in Netflix
He’ll need to ride his knicks off, and have some luck go his way - Pog in fine form currently
so is Jonas its going to be a thrilling battle
Ehm. Both werent in the perfect one. Jv hadnt a good season to this Date and pog was heavily injured
Whoever
I fractured my left scaphoid a few years ago (same as Pogi in LBL in April, but he also fractured his lunate bone). To me, this could be the most significant limitation of his performance. Two months is not enough recovery time for him to withstand three weeks of racing. Especially sharp attacks and out-of-the-saddle work at these elite-level wattages will take their toll (let's be honest, he didn't need that for Slovenian RR and TT Champs). I hope that's not true, though and, most importantly, he won't injure himself any further with that wrist 🙏
great recap
