This is the first interview with Tuomas I've watched since falling head-over-heels in love with this band and their music about a month ago. He's not AT ALL what I expected. No egotism, no pompousness, no pretentiousness. He seems like a regular, relatable guy who also just happens to write the most epic, majestic, frisson-inducing music I've ever heard in my life.
Tuomas is the most down to earth guy you can imagine. I had the joy to talk to him a few times and all I can say is that he's the nicest person ever. I wish you a lot of fun discovering one of the greatest bands of all time. Twenty years ago when I heard their music for the first time I was just a kid... but to this day I am still in love with them. I don't know if you already heard about it, but there will be a new album this year. :)
@@A.HollerMusic You know who else seems to be really nice? Nightwish fans! Thanks for kind words! Yes, I've heard there's a new album coming in the spring and I'm looking forward to it!
@@Duncan_Idaho_Potato Oh, thank you very much. :) I'm just happy that there are still people who apreciate (in my opinion) good music... especially if it's the music of my all time favourite band. Tuomas and Nightwish had a big influence on my own writing.
There is something about his eyes that just keeps me mesmerised to his soul which is reflected in every song they have ever made. Thank you for this conversation. I really enjoyed it and I appreciate the fact that the interviewer had actually thought about the questions before asking them. Really rare and forgotten art these days.
‘Music is so subjective, how do you decide what’s best.’ I wish more people understood that. We, as Nightwish fans, could get along so much better if this was allowed to sink in. Overall great interview, thank you.
impressive how he managed to pick up on what the interviewer wanted to say, while the interviewer was struggling to get the words out... very well done
Imagine sitting down with such a creative mind: talking with Shakespeare, Spielberg, Robin Williams, Churchill, Mozart, or such about their craft and creativity. I agree with every comment about the twinkle in his eyes, sometimes he looks reticent bordering on unease but here he is frank and insightful and seems to be enjoying the interview.
I just find it incredible how NIghtwish band literally has the cream of the crop members. Tuomas obviously is a genius. I don't think there's anyone in the metal/rock industry that would disagree, fans of course think that. Floor is probably the best singer on the entire planet. Marco is a fantastic vocalist and also writes a lot of music. Emppu is a guitar virtuoso. Troy is a multi talented musician like no other. Jukka and Kai are both amazing drummers. It's just perfection. Never change Tuomas, thank you for your music.
As far as band chemistry, this line-up (whether it's Jukka or Kai, they are equally ideal for the line-up) is, to me, a case of the mad scientist finally perfecting his secret formula. Yeah, other than a J-K swap, don't change a thing!
For me this line up is perfect and hope that they will stay up for some time! Hope that Jukka feels better and can join the band, but if not then Kai will keep rocking with Nightwish! At some point it would be nice if Anette or Tarja would join NW on some shows as guest artist!
They're less than 10 guys im a huge fan of in this planet, This man is one of them along Thomas Bangalter, the ratatat duo and Nujabes... Such a Genius. "the poet and the pendulum" is an absolute masterpiece.
I think the Freudian slip of "I don"t take it for granted for once" regarding the lineup show [possibly some growth in regards to realizing that communication makes for a happier band.
What the Interviewer doesn't get is that they make Music, not selling Hits. A storytelling Bread we (they) are. The only Wish would be if Tuomas would do a Vocal..even if its short with Troy..like The Islander.
Every artist needs a break and to concentrate on something they don't normally do to rejuvenate. For Tuomas, that was AURI. And I, for one, am grateful that he has his inspiration back. I cannot wait to see what the Mad Scientist releases from the lab, given he has Floor's versatility and range full-time. The suspense is terrible...I hope it lasts...lol.
I think he was mainly referring to the business side of the band. Even at this juncture he had written the music for 6 songs, with nobodies input yet. He's in control of everything to this point. Then he 'presents' it to the rest for their part, and they probably make him feel ok with this arrangement.
I still just wonder what happened to Jukka Nevalainen. It was said in the past, the current drummer is only a session-guest but it doesnt seem so anymore...
@@Roman8707 Orchestration is usually done by a guy called Pip Williams that takes Tuomas' orchestral ideas to another level and translates it to fully blown orchestra. In that sense, Tuomas really isn't a control freak, he knows what he wants, but is also surrounded by nice people that are great at what they do. That's incredible and very rare.
The loss of Jukka and Marko, to my mind, was a severe blow. The new drummer is adequate but does not drive the sound like Jukka. The new bass player is good, but the loss of Marko's voicevis irreplacable.

Finns tend to be that way. Our culture underlines humility and quietness. Obviously not all act like that, but in larger scale most definately do.

Oh don't worry for the fans. We will always be there for Nightwish!

This was such an insightful interview into the man's thoughts on the bands career thus far, good stuff 👍🏻
your name is weak

"Bigger than ever" So much bigger! Good to hear this is the *Final* line-up.
Oh yea I never want any change in lineup ever in Nightwish, it's perfect like this😍😍👍
😢😢 well this hurts today....
Tuomas ages like fine wine... 😍💜
Very good job by the interviewer. He asked insightful questions and allowed Tuomas plenty of time to answer.
This interview brought so much info about Tuomas, his process of writing/ composing and how the band works. Thanks a lot for the great work there
Thanks Samuel!
I love my poet and mad respect for Kai for how much stuff he had to learn in such a little time frame
Kai is one of the best drummers ever! He is sooo missed in Swallow the Sun and Wintersun. For NW, he is a jackpot.
NW songs should be a peace of piss for him :)
@@alasanoei Kai is very good, no doubt but have never heard of Neil Peart?
@@M11969 Nope, but I'll check him out. :) Thanks!
He has matured a lot 💕

this is so great to know things about NIGHTWISH and all the great epic songs thanks Tuomas .

Marko is one of the best singers in the world. You need to listen to his stuff outside of Nightwish
Very good interview, thanks!
Such inspiring interview, real and all the feels.

Great Interview. This man is a genius
This was a fantastic interview. Very insightful.

What a lovely interview!
You are such a great mind and story teller. I love what you design. Huge fan. Thank you Toumas.

Jukka and Kai are like night and day. Both are extremely talented but their styles completely different.
Great conclusion to a very awesome interview!
Thanks again for posting! : )

14 number one singles in Finland...
Tuomas: Couple hits in Finland long time ago lol
"Nobody in the band want do this crap" lol
Very insightful to hear the father of gothic rock a excellent group carry on you did not lost this fan forsure even if there was really rough patches
Father of gothic rock? He just said he was inspired by gothic rock bands in the beginning 😕
feels bad that he has to cut off the singing during P&P. great questions from the interviewer.
I think the Freudian slip of "I don"t take it for granted for once" regarding the lineup show [possibly some growth in regards to realizing that communication makes for a happier band.
I caught that Freudian slip too! I don't want to read too much into the meaning, but the possibilities are interesting to ponder.

"I've never been a control freak" The way the book describes him and the band back when recording Angels Fall First and Oceanborn says otherwise :)
ArcaneSiren Specially Romanticide's verse saying "perfectionist my messenger from hell" 😂 maybe he's past that too 😂
Composer!
Funny he’s saying he isn’t a control freak. I was thinking the opposite 😊
All geniuses are control freaks, whether they admit it or not
Thats what a control freak would say
Well, this "control freak" ( it's his project to being with anyway ), has brought us literal perfect albums for 22+ years, so yeah, keep doing that.
Listen to Marco's interview on the same channel where he says if Tuomas is or isn't a control freak
I think he was mainly referring to the business side of the band. Even at this juncture he had written the music for 6 songs, with nobodies input yet. He's in control of everything to this point. I agree, greatest hits is a stupid phrase.
what's täsmäosaaminen in english?
Ahahahahah fantastic! I adore finnish language and this man! (what does this word exactly mean?)
Google says, täsmäosaaminen in English for täsmäosaaminen. So yeah, Toumas having invented Google Translate CONFIRMED!
Maybe "precise know-how"?
Maybe domain-specific competence or something like that.
Tadmallin means precise and osaaminen means know how.
I don’t think he realize how big is
Nightwish outside Finland.
What is the interviewer called?
He is good at interviewing! Can see Tuomas is relaxed with him
The man is a genius
10th man down was a great choice 👍🤘
I still just wonder what happened to Jukka Nevalainen. It was said in the past, the current drummer is only a session-guest but it doesnt seem so anymore...
Jukka is suffering from insomnia. Apparently he can't drum for the band anymore because of it.
He is doing band management now for nw
Uh thank you for that info :)
Insomnia why does this awful thing have so beautiful name? i am speaking from experience.
Is it incurable? I mean, he's been away for quite a while now.
It's Latin, everything sounds good in Latin.
I wonder whether the video was shot in his own house.
I wanted to know how he does the orchestration?
He writes the music down, plays certain parts on his keyboard, brings it to the London symphony and they work together to compose and orchestrate.
@@Roman8707 Orchestration is usually done by a guy called Pip Williams that takes Tuomas' orchestral ideas to another level and translates it to fully blown orchestra. "I can't take another lineup change."
Well, in the end he had to take another BIG lineup change. Sad, but Marco's health is priority.
He seemed to get annoyed at the end there 😜
The loss of Jukka and Marko, to my mind, was a severe blow. The new drummer is adequate but does not drive the sound like Jukka. The new bass player is good, but the loss of Marko's voicevis irreplacable.
Good interview but the interviewer sounds as if he’s incredibly intimidated by Tuomas. Gotta loosen up a little bit.
The interviewer is really difficult to understand, like he has his mouth full of something 😖
Ahw he is super nervous
