- In this vlog, I'm out photographing on a misty morning with my Mamiya 7 II medium format camera and a roll of Ilford FP4+ black and white film.
I'm on a private estate in South Oxfordshire where I'm visiting a friend who manages the area and my dog Barney has come along too.

Reinforces an important element in this type of photography, that access to private locations, where few, if any photographers have access, grants the lucky photographer a massive opportunity. Nice work and on a very desirable camera. A lot easier to manage, I expect, than the Mamiya C3 I am currently lugging around, but it delivers magic every time I use it. Mamiya, such an undervalued brand.
That's not entirely true with this place. It is a private estate so I was able to move about quite freely but it's not a totally closed off area. There are some public footpaths across this land so some of these trees can be viewed from different points. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the enhanced access this time but this is a rare thing for me. Enjoy your C3. I've never owned a TLR but would like to give one a try some day. Thanks for watching.

Some beautiful conditions matched by an amazing location. I love the Cedar of Lebanon tree, which you typically do find on big estates. They are so grand looking and even more so in fog. I must say, I would have loved to have been there with colour on that day!
Yes, it's an amazing tree and it was great to roam around on a private estate. I know what you mean about colour but I had made a decision to go B&W. I just wish the fog had lingered a while longer - it was lovely while it lasted.

The most important is not the f stop and Shutter speed he used, but the way he metered the screen with the spotmeter, and the reasoning behind it, the exposure values are a the result of that process. I wished he explained the metering process in this misty situation. Great shots..but personally I will always use a tripod and cable release for these shots. Said that, nice video..
I enjoyed watching this, very relaxing with the natural ambient sounds and no pumping, inappropriate soundtrack which you find on so many other videos. Big fan of the Mamiya 7, I’ve subscribed on the strength of this one video alone.

Great work! I'm impressed that you nail all of your shots. I always take at least one "insurance" shot at a stop slower than indicated by my metering. You're obviously much better at determining exposure than I am!
Sometimes I take more than one, but I'm trying to be more disciplined and have confidence with the way I've metered. Shooting digital for so many years has made me lazy.

Great video, thanks for including the actual camera setting, Some many vlogs neglect to mention what and why they use a particular settings. I shoot the RB67 in the field and this vlog was very helpful.

Hey Craig. You’ve got patience ...... and cameras to burn! Haven’t seen one of these for a while. Some of your methods here made me smile. You light calculations and manual variations to spot metering are a classic indication of someone who started in photography on the starting line, which took an understanding of how cameras, light, fstops and shutter speeds all symbiotically work together. Nice to watch you work Craig.

Hey Ewan, good to hear from you. D'you know, I just struggle to get rid of stuff. I have so many camera systems on the go from years of collecting. I kept hold of my old Canon FD gear that I had from the start when I went digital and I'm glad I did as I'm now back using it again. My channel has kind of gone over more to film photography as that's what I'm enjoying at the moment and have added medium and large formats as they seem to make sense when working slower with landscapes. I'm glad you liked it. I hope you have some more videos coming soon as it's a joy to watch you work and you've got that accent to die for unlike my flat South East regional effort!
LOL @@CraigPrentisPhoto ! Ill be heading into the South Island soon to look at MF Workshop material and locations. Ill be heading to Moeraki and also Mount Cook National Park, as well as trying to get into the heavens at 2000M (not workshop location). Re the accent - Gee thanks. LOL I have spent years trying to hide my Orkney accent, (which my current accent isnt) LOL.. Keep up the great vlogs mate.

Im a total sucker for foggy conditions but actually thought tge best image was the stopped down tree base at 1 sec. Beautiful image and with that DOF and lens it was always going to work. Tremdendous stuff Craig.
GW690III it was so bright by the time I finished that vlog. I just wanted more mist so that the whole thing could have stuck to a theme. Anyway, it was nice and shady for the last shot - I’m glad you liked it. Cheers for watching.

Excellent video Craig...as always. Been using 4x5 mostly for a while, but you make me want to take out my Mamiya 7II more often.( Had it for years with 43,64 and 150. Stunning lenses!)

Nice bit of breakfast YT that was :) What a location to have access to for sure Craig and conditions were perfect for isolating those trees. It reminds me of an estate I use to stay on as a youngster - in a place called Nettlebed. The opening shot was a corker. The 2nd image with the dove cote, the small tree to the left - would like to have seen some space to the left of it as I felt it left the image unbalanced a little, also when I saw your b roll of the scene was thinking that would look nice in colour (but obviously not possible). The shot of the trees with the n without the orange filter - for me without the filter was the one I preferred more on a 1st glance although didn't think there was a lot between them. Tfs
Hi Alan, yes it's not a bad location is it? It's funny you mentioned the second image as I remember looking at this at the time and thought about filling the frame on the right a little more with the tree or including more elements on the left. I was looking to keep a little bit of the eeriness of the scene with the mist and make it a really simple composition - I quite like it as it is but I can see what you're saying. Like you, I think I prefer the no filter shot later. It has a little more contrast. The orange filter has deepened the blue of the sky but generally softened up the tones a bit. Nice images and nicely done video! It's good to see someone else who uses an orange filter too. I do have to comment on those tree images. I liked what you did, but I really loved the angle from where your video camera was only closer in to fill the frame with the trunk. Maybe adding the orange or even a red filter would increase the contrast to make a really interesting image with the shapes and angles in a vertical shot. I'm happy to see your sub numbers rising too! Word is getting out and it's well deserved!
Thanks John, yes sometimes I see stuff in my footage and think 'that would have made a nice shot', so I can see where you're coming from. Sometimes I feel that making these vlogs just gets in the way of just going out and enjoying a photo session! But yes, I'm also glad that the numbers are rising and on the whole, I've been receiving some favourable feedback so I'm pleased how it's going. Thanks for your comments once again.

That's funny, just as this comment came through I was watching your kit video for the Japan trip. Yes, the m7ii has a very quiet shutter and is light and portable. I keep looking at the RZs as I used them years ago when I was at college and I like that you can load up different backs. I'll check out your Taipei trips to see if your gear has changed! Cheers

Lovely photo's. I used to have a Mamiya 6 but sold it when I went digital about 10 years ago. That was a bad decision in hindsight.
Thanks Toby, yes I can relate to that. A lot of film gear got sold off around that time. Prices for some bits of gear (incl. Mamiya 6&7) are steadily creeping up. I can't see that happening to old digital gear.
Headed to the beach tomorrow morning planning to be there about sunup to catch the morning fog. I will be shooting 120 Fuji Acros film. Really not sure how to expose to get a good shot of the fog in the heavy forest trees we have here. Thinking that maybe I will pull the films stop and just hope for the best.
Yes, I would tend to give it a bit more in the exposure. The fog can fool the metering and lead to underexposure. Try spot metering for the darkest areas where you still want detail and then stop down 1-2 stops

Great vid, Craig. Have you shot much Delta 100 before? if so, how would you compare FP4 to Delta 100?

@@CraigPrentisPhoto I've shot both but am undecided on which I like more. Going on a road trip around rural New Zealand over Christmas and thought I would go with FP4 for a change...It seems as though there's more contrast in FP4 and the highlights and darks are much more pronounced than Delta which is slightly flatter...
From my understanding, there’s supposedly less grain in Delta films and a slightly cleaner look. I’m more used to FP4 and HP5 as this is what I first shot with. They’re reliable and consistent with a lovely range of tones. The choice of developer and technique will also be a factor with how it renders. This was done in ID11. Good luck with your trip and why not take a few rolls of both? Cheers

Ilford FP4 has a speed of 125, but the Mamiya 7ii goes from 100 to 200 when you lift up the dial to match the film speed. Do you compensate for the 25 film speed or just leave it on 100 without any other adjustment?
You can set all film speeds on the Mamiya 7ii, i.e. 100, 125, 160, 200...But for these shots, I spot metered and adjusted the SS and F no. manually.
