This is the beauty of an immense domestic market, right here. Volume, industrial policy, compete on price at first and add software value as you go to compete internationally, cross pollinate with similar industries.
the value of robotics: Perhaps China is more comfortable with thinking long term in the context of population decline and acting accordingly. Perhaps the USA is governed by the stock market and acts accordingly.
Eyeopening as always. I live where some of the remnants of the Dutch manufacturing base are located. Robots and workers are steadily moving up the value chain which is causing immens problems at the bottom. For example; cleaners have become robot operators and now there are no cleaners left. My tiny Netherlands can't scale up - China can.
China had atleast five years of testing before any were released. Fascinating about the promotion!! Let us know how this career progresses! Would be handy if robot controller could make you another cleaner, if given a 3d printer.
I would imagine Chinese manufacturers are buying every robot that is domestically produced. Automation will keep production costs low, offsetting other costs.
Exactly. China isn't dumping because the domestic demand is HUGE. Right now, South Korea has 1,012 robots per 10,000 workers, vs China only has 392 robots. China will ultimately need 3x as many robots in order to match South Korean automation adoption rates.
Really, do you know that as fact or is it simply your thoughts! Here in the UK, I work with many businesses that have installed robots, anyone who can operate a CNC machine can program them, exactly the same with the maintenance side.
Learning all advanced science and technology with a humble attitude and diligent action has turned China from a poor agrarian country to a relative wealth industrial country.
@@WellSalt-Studio , On that note, but then the US can import robots to do the handicraft industry, and thereby renaming it as robohandiraft industry, simply put -- automation of handicraft industry with robots.
One area where Chine robots are quickly proliferating is AGV (Automatic Guided Vehicles) to efficiently move, queue, load and unload work between production lines and machine tools. 4 years ago we deployed our first domestic AGVs and the first year was spent learning and debugging software. Our last installation, 3 moths ago, was virtually plug and play , with only tool level customization needed. Line now lights out at a fraction of the cost for equivalent Japanese tools. Will the first generation have problems? Sure. Will they be quickly solved? Sure.
Yes, you do. People consume, robot don’t besides regular maintenance. They don’t fancy a nice up of coffee, don’t buy girlfriends expensive bags, never need a pleasure trips to escape from stress, and consume none of all those things that make economy humming. Thus shrinking demands due to a shrinking population means even robots would have to reduce productions, causing the economy to shrink in spirals. Unless China can keep on ramping up exporting with the help of their robots. That is mot a good idea long term though.

Thank you as always for such a concise, yet absolutely indispensable channel. It's getting to the stage where the China - Australia comparison is starting to resemble the Australia - Vanuatu comparison.
That "Microprocessor gap" was two years ago. With recent developments (and large scale production) that gap has closed. Same goes for the AI chips - the Huawei Kirin 9000C is better (and more energy efficient) than the comparable NVidia processor, and certainly available in quantity. This type of processor is more than powerful enough to power any current robotic system.
No need to put sanctions or tariffs on Chinese robots because they have no intention of selling them in America. What an interesting turn of events. Our politicians may put tariffs on them anyway, because they are often talking out of the wrong end of their physical self.
Remember about shrinking numbers of people on work force market in 5, 10 and 15 and 20 years. Then robots and automatisation become real crucial points of power. God bless You from Poland.
Ya, and by then, they'll have too few people to build their own national robotics companies and become reliant on the only one who bothered to do so :P
I read about some report that the US port workers were on strike, and one of their demands was that there be no automaton of the port. That might explain why there is no need to import robots into the US from anywhere else.
China is developing robotics and AI, while having a robust and expanding social security net. There is no housing crisis in China, the cost to afford housing is going down, the cost of family raising is subsidized, infant mortality is down, life expectancy is up, rural communities are being developed, small cities are growing, and minorities are not being left behind. Their population decline is turning into population sustainability. China has expanded its living space capacity. Robotics and AI will not be a dystopian nightmare like it would be for us in the West. Techno-socialism is alot more attractive than Techno-feudalism.
Much of this was started with ill-advised tarrifs. As part of the overall response, China now sees a strategic advantage in not exporting some things such as robots. I note that Alibaba developed a new CPU (Yitian 710) with more powerful compute and lower energy requirements. They plan to use it exclusively for their own cloud computing, thus making them even more competitive.
China does not even have enough robots for itself, and does not want to export them, nor does it want to create rivals to compete with its own industrial and economic development 。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。😁😁😁😁🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
US workers are resistant to automation because they think it will take their jobs. In reality it is just the opposite. A prime example is the Longshoreman strike that wants to prohibit automation in their labor contract. This will just make US factories less competitive in the global markets. We will have less product to ship out, and less money to buy products to ship in. China is aware of the MACROECONOMIC reality of time, whereas the US is focused on the political microeconomics of this year.
The western economies are at a point where if the robot replaces you, you lose your job and you probably won't find another one. There's no new demand for unskilled labor, and the demand for qualified labor cannot be satisfied because the workers aren't qualified.
They should upgrade their skills to prevent onset of dementia. If there are less exports and imports, attrition of workers would come from retirements. No more new hiring by the port management.

Xi rolled out the infrastructure in the right order so each one boosted the productivity of the next. Free electricity because it has a renewable source, was first. Then trains that used the free power, then homes, like goid value liveable ones, even though not wastefully large, connected to the trains. Then the value-stream focussed industrial parks, to build the industries which gave purpose to the workers who accessed everything on at-cost (like 50c) trains. He also used repestability to make it efficient. The power, water, trains, for all 1.5 Billion citizens were all in upfront. Then the repeating house towers which we could move into as they were done. All that resulted ib super cheap housing, transport, elec, rent, and food/elder/baby care by the house workers. $2 meals at the local volunteer-run canteen, free when you're old, cheapest lifestyle ever! Watching videos of Western tourist's experiences of China, it seems China is a people's paradise. It is a peaceful, hard-working men and women population, less concerned with politics and more with creativity and innovation. Chinese people decide what to buy and what not to buy. All political systems have their own strengths and weaknesses. All people are free. It is the people of the free world to judge. Many times, it is not the system and the people but the leaders who decide what to narrate, and how to narrate about the 'other' system. Dear Lord, Thank you for providing a fair-minded and noble people with this technology that will free humanity from menial tasks… and keeping it away from those who would privatize it and then charge the world for this culminating gift from our ancestors. ✌🏼
Robots are not just in manufacturing, they are in hotels, seniors homes. Yes, they replace workers. The 22nd century is coming, people will work 20 hours a week, lots of social life and family time. The government needs to find ways to balance the rich and poor.
A robot in a Chinese factory is going to be more productive than the same robot anywhere else, because of better infrastructure and supply chains and economies of scale and agglomeration and everything else. You can buy Chinese robots and make your American factories more efficient, but they still won't be as efficient as the Chinese factories, so what's the point? Oh, and when US ports try to upgrade their productivity with Chinese cranes (which are big robots, given how much they're automated), the US government decided that is a "national security risk" and block it.
Great Video, if young people in China are refusing to work in factories then its sensible to use the massive number of STEM students to build robotic solutions and the associated eco systems to ensure economic success and to assist in the care of the elderly population. China doesn't need to export this technology to the USA. It needs to get it right at home to survive, grow and innovate. Much like Tesla and "Optimus" a long term view where vast change is coming. Its a 20-30 year process to get the system right and tune and train Ai for roles and functions, China once again sees a different future of its Citizens and has a plan to get there whereas the West just looks for short term profit by importing low cost workers, ignoring the issues and Crisis that will come.
wondering what does Kevin do in China 😆 hopping from city to city, alway find a place to film these videos with no interruption by random guy , difficult task to do in China 🤣
India has been late in computerizing, creating protectionism against foreign computers. The cheaper the robots, the better for commerce and for industries that do not manufacture robots. This reaction of isolating China in advanced products will make the price lower within China, helping other sectors to automate faster and at a lower cost, as it was with 5g.
We should expect to see mass AI + 5G + robotics fusion driving the next Industrial Revolution. I wonder what China will be like when they can automatically mass produce things on smart, networked machines, and whether mass customize and mass tailor will be included.
Chinese companies are primarily competing with other Chinese companies. In this type of competition, labor costs are a key differentiator. Western industry has shrunk so much that what is left in the West are niche players who do not have significant local competition and thus compete on local factors which do not include labor costs. Western companies continue to contract so they are not going to invest in labor saving technology such as robots if their investment horizon is under 5 years.
The working capability of technology grows exponentially, while that of humans grows logarithmically; based on this underlying fact, capital manages nations, so everything is predetermined.
It's not china doesn't wanted to export automation robot. It's the USA doesn't want them or doesn't want to allow them. This why the port labor are protesting now. 2nd security reason. Third the money save on labor, the money will go to the CEOs snd investers.
Very informative report-thanks Kevin. Let me disagree on China’s ambitions to sell robotics into the West. Example: In August 2024, the Chinese robot manufacturer Estun launched a European subsidiary, Estun Robotics Europe AG. The company's management includes former CEOs of Kuka and Fanuc.
I was watching robots working in Chinese hotels before Covid. Cute like R2D2 boxes that could deliver packages to guests rooms. Has anyone seen those in American or European hotels? I'm very curious to know that. here is another use of robots in China that I heard about a few years ago that is very seldom mentioned, automation in military munitions factories, that is difficult and dangerous work that has to be done with a very high level of precision, perfect for robots. the Chinese article I read said that one particular ammunition factory had reduced its labor force from 100 to 2 after automation. That sort of efficiency in military production has all sorts of effects further down the line.
And also, American Labor Unions are doing all they can to prevent automation, robotics, and AI from increasing productivity and efficiency. China doesn't need to worry about Labor Unions.
Such an insightful statement "don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good". In other words don't get stuck with analysis paralysis or achieving perfection the goal is always to progress test and see what is the best methodology in the the best innovations that work and run with it.
US union workers do not like robotics and automation. The recent major strike at one of the ports in California where the union forced the port operator to sign an agreement not to implement automation in the future. Otherwise, they will continue to strike. This is American style, efficiency means job losses.
Again it high lights the difference between focusing long term vs quarterly planning favours by NA businesses. Our living standard will continue to fall as a result.
100% Tariffs is only the USA and likely G7. This group only represents less than 15% of the worlds population. Tariffs always backfires when the country enforcing Tariffs does not invest in infrastructure, education, research and development. The collective West already dug it's own grave because relying on Imperialism forever is a failed model.
It will certainly take some time before Chinese robotics exports pick up. They will face competition from Japanese, Swiss, Italian, German and South Korean peers.

This is the beauty of an immense domestic market, right here. Volume, industrial policy, compete on price at first and add software value as you go to compete internationally, cross pollinate with similar industries.
A great summary. ❤ Another hidden advantage is hardworking and well educated citizens coupled with strong social and public policy incentives.

Well update by Reuters now China is the biggest user of robotic manufacturer in the world
Eyeopening as always.
What a great channel!
On point as allways Kevin, in the US and in the EU they don't have the STEM people to maintain and instruct those robot's .

That's not very smart. Imagine farmers opposing the use of tractors.... That would definitely "create" new jobs.
Soon they gonna ban the Chinese cranes. And china is the only maker in the world. They will lose volume and they will have lay off people.
That’s takes a lot of nerve to protect their own jobs. And future jobs for humans.

Sure.
China really doesn't need to worry about the population decline with robots doing much of the manual labour.
There is a lot to worry about population decline. "China" is not the land. It is the society, made by chinese PEOPLE.

We visit China for their Trade Fairs, and the comparisons between China and the so-called "civilised" West are pretty significant (and rather depressing).
Great breakdown. Thanks for the tune up - In China Business!

Kevin good morning, you are absolutely spot on with your analysis and info in this podcast. ❤
Thanks as usual for all your insightful and informative reporting 🙏

The United States can consider developing handicraft industry. The AI industry is not suitable for the United States now.
That all meant we were happy on low wages, as we had everything we needed. We could then work good long shifts to really focus on a priblem and never had to worry about wages as it was always more competitive than any where else.
You guys can do this! Just have to start and do it on China Time
Watching videos of Western tourist's experiences of China, it seems China is a people's paradise. The world is beautiful, and the people and all systems are beautiful.

I'm working with Geek+ AGV to automate logistic warehouses in the States, but only Chinese warehouse owners are considering it.
Probably the Chinese warehouse owners balk at the state-side workers' entitlement and laziness since they've seen better. Not that all chinese are golden (plenty of laziness and fluff), but sometimes I'm just surprised by the "it's not my problem" attitude here. I'd rather pay to have automation with sensors than having to chase down the buck passing.
It serves your customers faster and better with warehouse automation. For example, a customer places an urgent order by phone to be self collected with the a supplier, the staff handling would key in the order to retrieve from the store. The parts would be ready even before the customer arrives.

This movie is a total misunderstanding. Everything is made in China and when you put 20 robots together in a production line, they are worth 20 times more. But they are still built in China.
China is sending fully automated production lines out of the country. And in them there are Chinese robots.
Its all about control of supply chains, we have monopoly over many, but i dont think we can keep our dominance without automation, therefore we build auto systems for domastic production not for export
Dear Lord,
Thank you for providing a fair-minded and noble people with this technology that will free humanity from menial tasks… and keeping it away from those who would privatize it and then charge the world for this culminating gift from our ancestors.

Without industrial and manufacturing power, military power is weak.
Intressting as allways!!!
They just haven't met the right one yet...

I think they just don’t worry about overcapacity. They just improve
Again it high lights the difference between focusing long term vs quarterly planning favours by NA businesses. Our living standard will continue to fall as a result.
What’s the point in exporting and facing 100% in tariffs?
100% Tariffs is only the USA and likely G7. This group only represents less than 15% of the worlds population. Tariffs always backfires when the country enforcing Tariffs does not invest in infrastructure, education, research and development. The collective West already dug it's own grave because relying on Imperialism forever is a failed model.
USA has no supply chain.
It will certainly take some time before Chinese robotics exports pick up.
They will face competition from Japanese, Swiss, Italian, German and South Korean peers.
