  • In our last video, we talked about our plans to reduce our propane use by installing a wood boiler to generate heat. We showed you the concrete pad we installed, the placement of the boiler on that pad, the wood shelter we built to keep our wood supply dry, and the process of splitting and stacking wood for the winter.
In this video, we're going to show the sequence of events in the installation process and explain how we're tying the boiler into our existing heating system in the barndominium. Come along as we show you our progress in this phase of our off grid adventure!

Glad you enjoyed it. One thing that I may need to add is a mixing valve on the heat from the wood boiler. The water from our propane boiler is set to 140deg while the water from our wood boiler varies drastically. When the water gets above 140, it really should be mixed with cooler water before running into the floor. It hasn't been uncomfortable but we do have more of a temperature swing when very hot water is being pumped into the floor.

About how much does a HDX 760 cost?

It was a couple of years ago but I think I paid around $16K. I know that's a lot of money but I reduced my propane use this past year from $4K to $1K so the payback timeline seems reasonable.
