    “A Teacher” explores the complexities and consequences of a predatory relationship between a young teacher and her student. Beautiful and quietly enigmatic, Claire is the newest teacher at Westerbrook High School in Texas. Dissatisfied in her marriage to her college sweetheart, Claire’s life changes when Eric, a charming all-American senior in her English class, asks for help preparing for his SAT test. Popular and outgoing, Eric is the captain of the soccer team and nearly inseparable from his best friends. Everything seems perfect on the surface, but Eric is forced to juggle the pressures of school, applying for college and a part-time job, all while helping take care of his two younger brothers. As Claire and Eric begin to spend more time together, boundaries are crossed, and a subtle game of grooming begins. The permanent damage left in the wake of Claire’s choices becomes impossible for them, and their friends and family, to ignore.

    It really seems like she contacted him because her life has gotten difficult and boring again. Can't get a job, can't go to PTA meetings, etc. So what does she do with her life? She plays the content housewife to her new husband and mother to her kids. I never got the sense that those things would give a woman like her contentment or joy. She's fooled herself into thinking those ties are what she needs to lead a good life, but it's only a matter of time before the cycle repeats out of unhappiness, lack of spontaneity, and boredom. She may be sorry for what she did, but she hasn't really accepted the full responsibility of her actions while (once again) reaching out to her victim, to see how he's doing and if he's moved on. If she'd really done any kind of soul searching or truly accepted blame for what happened, she'd have realized how inappropriate and unnecessary to his healing process her contacting and wanting to meet with him truly was. Instead, she's either trying to feel him out to see if he's open to more side piece action OR wanting sympathy from the only person who could give it to her and make her feel better. She gets neither from this interaction, so to me it only seems like a matter of time before she relapses into another life-imploding affair. This was a well done show, many opinions will differ and clash but isn't that the point of good art, regardless of medium?

      I love this comment so much! It's definitely a show that'll be on my mind for a long time!
      Even though I agree with most people that Claire is a despicable person, who was being inappropriate with one of her students. I think there is complexity to her character where she feels remorse and guilt (even if she's more concerned about herself), which I have to give compliments to Kate Mara's performance for making her so dimensional!
      But above all of that she is still a toxic person, who can't admit or own up to the fact that she loves the thrill of being chaotic! If she truly did care about hurting Eric and her husband, she would take full responsibility and would work on seeking professional help that she clearly needs rather than resist it and keep living in denial.
      This final conversation between Claire and Eric was proof that she could very well be a lost cause, who will inevitably repeat the cycle and destroy her new family (and second marriage)!

      I understand what you mean, but there was a viewer discretion, so I wouldn't say the audience wasn't exactly targeted for younger people. But either way, it was meant to be watched from beginning to end. At the start, it does seem more romantic, and I believe this was all intentional, because it's supposed to show you how at FIRST, everything seems so sweet and warm, but as the series goes on, you begin to realize how twisted everything is which mirrors the experience of an actual victim. They don't feel like anything was wrong at first, but as they grow older, they see how much they are hurt from the predatory relationship and how they were truly the victim. It was supposed to make you feel excited at the beginning, but the harsh truth that Claire took advantage of Eric becomes painfully apparant. I completely respect your good intentions though.

    • @kweenz600
      @kweenz600 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I agree - a more direct statement about what she did would’ve been great. Eric did it a little when he said that she agreed to tutor him and took him to UT. But yeah I wish the series had done that part better, maybe portraying a therapy session for him or something.

    • @sydneychristensen2058
      @sydneychristensen2058 3 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      That was the point! Grooming isn't creepy a lot of the time, that's why it's called that. It's slow and it begins with the building of trust and friendship which is then used to the advantage of the perpetrator and turns the relationship into something dark and trauma-inducing.

    • @SK-fy8dl
      @SK-fy8dl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      The beginning of the show risks being gratuitous if the audience is fooled along with Eric into thinking it's romantic. The show could portray Eric as oblivious, but Claire knew what she was doing, and the audience should also be told/shown what she was doing. I'm not a minor but I couldn't recognize all the techniques she was using. It's ambiguous and subtle, but imo it should be more ominous and explicit.

      I dunno. I thought she was being sincere. But you can also get his anger in it all. Any young man would have his life messed up by a beautiful older woman. It seemed like their love for each other had some realness to it. She will never be forgiven, but had she left it there, I think he might have found it as a sort of closure and been okay. She said her piece, he corrected her, and she apologized. She seemed to recognize what she did, how it still affects him and he looked down, as if relieved.
    But then she started making excuses and pinning it on him, and he realized that this woman is not sorry she hurt him but is sorry that it affected her and is reaching out to be given permission to get rid of the bit of guilt she feels, regardless of his emotions, and he makes the choice to not give it to her, because she doesn’t deserve it. She doesn’t deserve his consent to be rid of the guilt because she didn’t have his consent when she harmed him. That’s how grooming works and he finally has his power back.
    That’s powerful.

Highly unlikely. She's a self-sabotager who also plays the victim. She'll never take full responsibility for her actions and she would do it again in a heartbeat. She 100% setup this lunch meeting to rekindle things (why else would she ask if he wanted something "else" to drink). She's going to blow her marriage up again... just not with Eric. And it is good that they show that a man can also be a victim of a woman. The point is that Eric is NEVER SEEN SUFFERING, on the contrary, his college and university classmates had him as an idol, he was better in bed with the girls ... they show you suddenly that 10 years passed and he feels like a rape victim without showing any process or development. While we have seen Claire with negative consequences of the fact.
