I feel like you could tell there was still apart of Eric that had love and affection towards Claire, but at that point he recognized how messed up their relationship was and how it destroyed him. Eric confronting her was the closure he needed in order to finally put her behind him for good! Now that he knows what kind of person she truly is.

I feel like normally I have understood how loneliness and lack of communication can lead to someone cheating (not an excuse and have never taken back a cheater nunder any circumstances) .
