Put a piece of wood under the sponge. 3 inches long, 1/2 thick. Use a masonry drill bit instead of a regular bit & a battery operated drill. It’s safer than using an electric drill in water. It took me less than 5 seconds to drill the holes.

Your drill is in reverse, that's why it took so long to make the hole. Also, most of the times electrical equipment and water don't go so well along.

A couple of comments: 1. I'm sure its been mentioned, but, please be safe with water and electricity. There are cordless drills on the market that are better suited for this work. 2. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Your work is beautiful. I work with glass, and glaziers use diamond coated drill bits. They may be more effective for drilling through glass. *CAUTION* Please note that there are several different types of drill bits for woodworking, metal, masonry, and also multi purpose bits. I'd imagine a masonry bit intended for tile or porcelain would likely work best for shells but I don't know for sure. I urge you all to make sure you're at least using a multi purpose bit and probably definitely not one made for wood. Wood is obviously a much softer material and using a wood bit would not only be more likely to crack your shell but more importantly, more dangerous. By which I mean the bit would slip around on the shell much more and could cause serious injury.
Its a diamond drill bit that you're supposed to use.. on something like a dremel.
Diamond drill bit is used for efficiently drilling shells.

Using a diamond burr drill bit, will be a big help in this method. It goes thru smoother and faster with less slippage.

I use a dremel. It's easier than a big drill for delicate applications, and there is a wide variety of bit for different sizes of holes.

I noticed the drill motor was running backwards. This will cause a much longer time drilling as the bits are made to cut when running clockwise.

I use a diamond burr bit in a Dremel but you could use the bit in a drill too

You don't need water for cooling if you're taking that many breaks between short bouts of drilling. You'll get less slippage with the bit on a dry shell and it will be easier to handle.

It's charged by an electrical outlet though 😆 Mermaids don't mix well with tech stuff😅
I used a glass bit with water and some sponge it took some time lol but I made holes without breaking the shell.

What about the abrasive dust? Does the water take care of that danger?
I am not sure. In theory, it should minimize the dust from the shell. However, it is always best to be extra safe just in case! ♥

Ive made a lot of different things with sea shells and the drilling of holes is better if you use a self tapping screw or self drilling screw and you will want to use one that is hex head and you can purchase them in any size you wish to and they last longer and are sharper than a drill bit just give it a try and let me know what you think sincerely Barry

What about using a porcelain drill bit or a diamond tip?
I've heard someone else suggest that before too. I'm certainly not an authority on drilling, but you could always try it and see how it goes! 😀

Hmmm... not really that I know of? I suppose you could try carefully creating a hole with an ice-pick, but I'm not sure if that would work or not?
Use a strong metal and scrape it or with small hammer taps
Use a cordless drill ! So you won't get electrocuted

A Dremel is the best with diamond bit. The regular drill bit worns down when you do the thick shells. No good
