At the end of Genkaku's journey, as he was cast out of the State and went to Highland, he somehow removed the rune and it was sealed in the shrine, with the Black Sword Rune. At that point is when Genkaku began aging again.
As stated on TVTropes, when a character pulls a Heel/Face Turn or Face/Heel Turn, they also have to change their looks slightly to show what side they're on. Jowy's change in looks is to show at a glance that he's no longer on your side, so you can just look and think "That's not my friend. Not any more."
haha Finally, a win under our belt!!! ugh but i cant believe Jowy would just join the highland army!! he's gotta be up to something right??!! Also man o' man, I feel like u could just spend hours and hours just customizing your castle and making it really awesome. It definitely is a nice break from the emotion filled story.
I have a theory. Fitcher is secretly great at politics thus he acts like an idiot to get people off guard and force them to do what they should have done in the first place. And here I thought he was a spy.
He can summon an airship with a 12 cannon battery on it, and he can do that 3 (IIRC) times in between rests. That move alone could see him winning the war by himself, ignoring the rest of Blue Gate's spells :P Sadly, the game would be over if he did so, and thus the writers forbid him from doing that.
But Muse was already lost because they were basically fighting Highland on their own. The Unicorn Army was too small and lacked a good tactician and leader at the time. So his friends could have died. I think that by killing Annabelle, he knew that Riou, Nanami, and Pilika would have had to run away, therefore staying alive. THAT'S what was important to him and he would make any sacrifice to make sure they were safe.
3 had VERY good aspects as a game, it just had a very hard act to follow, with 2 being so great. The story in 3 is AWESOME and shouldn't be missed, but yes, without being objective, you could be disappointed easily. That being said, I couldn't stand 4. I couldn't play past an hour.
I don't think Jowy is evil. I think he is just on Highlands side to learn about them and gain their trust. He must know Riou is the leader of the Unicorn Army and that he will have to face him in battle. He wouldn't do anything to harm him, so there must be another reason he is doing this.
It kinda confused me when Fitcher said that Riou had passed out. The screen just faded to black before it went to the scene with Luca and Jowy. Don't get me wrong, I've very much enjoyed watching this and I'm excited to see it to the end, but I think it would've made more sense if there had been some sort of animation with Riou falling over and everyone freaking out as the screen faded to black.
Makai’s portrait just makes him look gullible and indecisive, like if he embodies not knowing how to fix things and getting mixed up in trouble he couldn’t forsee.
This videos are great. The best things is how upbeat you are Luca. Not only is it really relaxing, but it also is a great way to cheer up. You make a lot of people happy by being happy yourself (at least I think your happy), so I wish for you to be as happy as can be! :-)
This is where it gets confusing...the wingers were brought into Two River 80 years ago, it was mentioned earlier in Two River...Susu says that it was Genkaku who brought them. But according to Viktor's story Genkaku fought 20 or 30 years ago, not 80... So are there 2 Genkaku's who held the Bright Shield Rune...or did they make a big mistake?
It doesn't seem logical that a 100+ year old hero could have done something 80 years ago? Remember, they never specify his age, he lived well, and he had magical healing assistance, pretty hard to deny it would have been easy for him to have been around so long ago as to have been able to help the Wingers.
I am loving this game. I can see why it's your favorite. You have the turn based strategy, the idea of customizing the castle, plus regular RPG stuff...it's like all sorts of my favorite types of gaming with a really good story included. How I did not know about this game is beyond me. It's definitely awesome. Can't wait to see more~

The nice thing about Suikoden is since you have a variety of SO many characters, they will all level up on a scale. For instance, if you got your main party to level 50, you'd find that MOST of the people you never touched in your list will scale up to a certain point. (maybe to 30 or so,) but also - if you put those lower level people in, 2-3 fights will get them up to speed. Otherwise you'd spend your whole life leveling them all. So I definitely suggest trying out different ones!

Lucahjin, I have a question about this game. I've never played it before, much less heard about it till this amazing LP of it now, and I've been curious about this for a couple episodes now but... Is it possible to beat the game using the same group with few minor changes for future party members or would you recommend to evenly level up a few certain people just to be safe?
fun fact: the Susu scene (Chaco's grandmother) is completely optional, you can just go back to the new leaf inn and spend the night to progress the story but if you do Susu won't recognize you in the future and you won't be able to obtain spinach seeds from her.
love the lp well ok im not sure if you know this or not I heard a few lpers of this game say they didn't. in the hallway above the restaurant there a enterance to a different area in the middle window you can even see the stone pathway it even has a mini game
Lucah, i was looking on the suikoden wiki, and according to a few major battles you had, only characters not major to storyline can die in battle, although if you want my advice, you can make a highlight reel as an extra video showing off all the deaths you suffered as an outtake video at the end of the series, is that an idea.
The problem with predicting something in the story is that once the story has given you the clues, it's going to boil down to three outcomes. Either the game does as what it's set up to look like, subverts it by doing the opposite, or something completely out of left field happens. Once you realize that and you keep your prediction vague, it's hard to get surprised.
No there are many others that share your opinion. I think the mount system in 3 is awesome, the story was great and the characters were just as good as any other game. But by FAR the best thing about Suikoden 3 is the True rune usage and just the sheer magnitude of power displayed by the True runes in that game. Also, I love Luc in that game, just a great surprise, also love the different points of view to piece together the whole story. Hamronia's involvement, the theater, the ducks etc

little late to this party but no Genkaku wasn't in the first one. The story of the first game was about a generals son that realizes the crimes of the empire hes been living his whole life in and eventually over throws it, cool story and great rune on the main character.

Sometimes I just wish RPG characters would be a little more psychotic at times. Klaus - "Ah, Lord Riou.." *Riou hand signals "Grim Reaper Special" to his team* *Riou lunges forth and snaps Klaus' neck with his tonfa, Clive headshots Kiba, Shiro leaps into the Highland squad and starts mauling them, Eilie pour knives on the enemy's heads, Luc pulls a "Fire EVERYTHING!" with his runes, and Nanami keeps everyone shielded* Problem solved, everyone in Two River can trust each other again!
There were only three reasons I could think of that Jowy might be wholeheartedly working for Luca. 1. He thinks that Luca might spare Riou, Nanami, and Pilika, but that would be an obvious lie and he's not that stupid. 2. The Black Sword rune somehow altered his fate and changed the way he thought, but how would a rune do that? 3. He wanted his family back on his side, but he was fairly mad at them for abandoning him. None of them really make sense, so unless I'm missing a detail, he has a plan.
I got a sort of "Sora and Riku" vibe off of Riou and Jowy from the start. So far, it's still there. And it accurately predicted his face heel turn, so who knows?
AoE spells require some preplanning to use. Your characters can move out of the way... provided they have the movement on hand to do it, or the correct skill. Makes the True Fire Rune a tad more difficult to use then the other two. Actually one of the main reasons I don't give it to the character who'd otherwise get it, it just doesn't see as much use.
How do you explain him killing the leader of muse and allowing Highland to gain so much ground. It doesn't make sense to go for espionage while sacrificing so much ground to Highland.
Honestly, I never even got far enough into 3 for anything major to happen. I just remember completely hating the battle system and just giving up at some point. Magic felt completely useless with the area of effect thing going on there. I should give the game another shot sometime, and I want to but it's not at my house right now. I'll try and push through the beginning again and give the game another shot as soon as I can.
Just because Genkaku fought 30 years ago for the State doesn't mean he didn't exist before then. He was a badass hero even before he served the State, he probably took the Wingers to Two River out of boredom one day or something. "Oh you guys need help? I'm free today, let's go!"

The rescue theme always give me the chills. My favorite moments is when Flik and Viktor rescued you in Kyaro.

Staying in the bath long enough will give the toasty status, toasty status itself is decent cause it gives you hp regen.

Love this game. Not sure if Jowy's on our side or not, but I like the complexness of the story. The mystery! The suspense! The action!

Ridley is only 31 as of Suikoden 2, that's about 4 years younger than Lucah was when she recorded this
It should be noted, though, that kobolds age faster than humans, so physically he's in his forties.
God this game has everything! People were obviously not appreciative of games like this back then. It's crazy.
Two River was my favorite part of Suikoden II.
I had a suspicion that Jowy would turn to the Dark side when I saw that the black sword ruin looked so evil. Plus, they have cookies!
