The devs should've made the tek forcefield able to protect anything inside from the sunlight with a few debuffs while on the surface like requiring twice the element to run and it being hot in there. That would make it more fun
I must say that it is nice to have a biome where you can't build, most people just place ugly boxes everywhere, keeping this huge chunk of 'wilderness' out there isn't that bad.
Have you found the little secrete unintentional cave right behind your surface base? If you go up onto the ledge directly behind that base, there is a small cave that you can access during the day. Its completely dark, and you cant place structures directly on the floor. However, I managed to place a pillar on the wall, then a foundation into the floor, then I could snap the rest of the foundations to the first one no problem. It's completely unintentional, but super cool and worth checking out just for the heck of it

Some pillars are beneficial but most of the time people are being dicks. I was on an official server and we would only put pillars near resource points so people couldn't stop resources from spawning. Looked ugly but it was the only thing we could do to prevent trolls from griefing. :x But unfortunately, that doesn't stop anyone else from blocking the entire map with them. -.-
Intrestingly, in my own testing we stuck a tek forcefield right where the edge of the shield would be in the fire, but the shield generator wouldn't be in the flames. This worked! And also seems to have bugged the entire map. The surfice no longer catches on fire durring the day. Even after Server restarts.

Surface flames will destroy any worn or actively held gear in seconds no matter what it is. Only way to reliably protect yourself up there without god mode is to boost fortitude and pump several points into it. On an Aberration server I sometimes play on, I go drop hunting on the surface with a 1500 fortitude and take no damage.
too add to this, in the southwest surface theres some amazing build spots up high, like when you first go to the durface theres a MASSIVE metal building take a drake to the top of it, can build over much of that area, about halfway down. if you follow the wall of the map clockwise youll find a couple cavelike crevices to build in that are not effected by the heat. the only way to access a base there during the day is by tek teleporter or beds.
they should make it so the shield generator protects the base within. or at least the tek tier building parts shouldn't take any damage since its a task to get all the bp for them same with the tek armor for you and your dinos..
Great video with some nice testing and controls. The foundations are odd but it looks like the debuff comes through all walls, so even if you could make an impervious structure you’d still die inside/lose all your items and infrastructure.
Before I get too far into this, my buddy and I played with this a little, and these were our results: Metal destroyed the fastest, followed by tek. We didn't run greenhouse or adobe, but the thatch, wood, and stone remained unharmed. We left, came back, and the only thing left was stone foundations, and they hadn't taken any damage whatsoever. We tried forcefields, ac's, and they didn't protect the buildings at all.

He said that if he were to record himself on a PvP server, other tribes could watch his videos and raid him along with a bunch of other bad things about PvP servers. That's why after Scorched Earth Steve switched to private servers.
you could still do PvP on a private server, just need to get enough people together to make it interesting and have a couple of tribes, personally i'd like to start up a private server with 3 or 4 tribes and allow every tribe a homebase that isn't allowed to be raided so they can build for aesthetics instead of perfect defense have a nice little village feeling where they can safely store their things etc. but everything else is open to being raided and maybe host events like a dino fighting ring, jousting competitions etc.
There is something to make you not on fire, it's called "infinitestats" just type it without quotes and you get infinite for all your stats. (you can die if something one shots you) And another one is "GCM" Type without quotes and you can make any structure, have a gun that is for creative reasons, and have all your dinos invincible, god mode style. Try them out.

I think its a height factor, cause the Wood and Thatch were higher up and the Greenhouse walls standing were on the level of the still standing foundations. So I think its a height based damage field kinda like how on The island water is set flat at a certain height outside caves even through the ground. So the damage field is probably set to a certain height for structures to stop surface buildings so alphas can't build a fortress that is defended from op fire and surface Reapers. Kinda wish Tek could be built up their like how it can work underwater especially since Tek is hard or impossible to build on official servers. :/
Btw if you logout and load back in (Atleast on singleplayer) on the surface during the night, you and your dinos still get the fire debuff and get annihilated, learned it the hard way
from my testing i found that the surface will only effect structures, after a player has triggered the scorched effect. if a player dose not walk into surface to trigger this the buildings will not be affected.
I'm not sure but I've heard rumors that they can not only be placed in water but environments with no oxygen present, such as space. The surface might qualify as that even though oxygen is present
Not sure if it's possible on land but since the foundation didn't take dmg maybe build a base out of foundation? I don't know how to stack foundation on land but I know you can on a boat thanks to your videos. Also, do cliff platforms take damage? Could use two one for floor and one for roof then foundations as walls. It wouldn't look pretty but maybe it could work?
Hey don't know how much building you've done in other biomes, but the bioluminescent biom does have green house effect in some areas. Don't know if that's useful for you but figured I'd mention it.
Other people in the comments are saying tek protects against radiation, but I haven't tested it for sure. They say you still get the debuff in the corner, but don't take damage from it.
Our dinos survived the surface day fine, because they were not loaded, structures should do the same. I can imagine some secret backup vaults up there near the map border where nobody goes.

Wonder if you can build underneath a rock formation which can provide cover? In of the entrance, there is such a place, but I have not explored deep into the surface to test further.
you can remove god mode by simply imputing the command again. whether that also removes from building, no idea, never heard of it applying to buildings before

There are little cave like spots on the surface that you could build a nice sized base in, when you walk in it its not as hot, can you test if it will work in them?
It has 2 modes. When you don't push anything it has a steady decent and you can't control your altitude. When you push and hold shift, you can control altitude, speed ect, just by pointing up or down.

One of the most annoying things about official servers
It sets it to basically where new players can't play on official servers because they can't build anywhere. Hate tribes that do that.

Steve you can use the command infinitestats and it won't effect your buildings. That way you'll be able to see the building damage and not burn up.
So, with the Structures plus mod you can stack foundations... ? could that work at all?

Reason the tek shield gen was taking damage was cause the thing that produces it is counted as a structure

With the S+ mod you can build out of foundations because they can stack. But the vanilla foundations don’t stack.

On the first green house you have ceilings going off the foundation basically into the ground maybe the tek has to be fully encased and none exposed

maybe the shade could be used to protect you base find a large shaded area and build there and it might work key word is might
if the foundation is the only thing that survives could you not build it it completely out of foundation and does height make a difference

Just an idea... build and test a pvp cliff platform :) see if enemy’s can climb up and ways to keep them off.
