Damn what an iconic rivalry, I was too young to fully appreciate the Man Utd - Arsenal rivalry, but after watching tons of documentaries about it and some of the classic games here on TH-cam/TV with the likes of Keane, Giggs, Henry, Fabregas, Vieira, Neville, Wenger and Ferguson discussing it, you have to appreciate that it was a truly box office rivalry that ultimately led to the Premier League being one of the most watched leagues in the world. I mainly remember the rivalry from 2003 onwards, the one in which Van Nistelrooy missed his penalty and where Lauren, Keown and Cole were all bashing into him after missing it which then kicked off a massive argument with both sets of players, even a young Ronaldo got involved as well that's just how much the rivalry meant to them. But what made it particularly fascinating was that if Van Nistelrooy were to have scored that penalty then Arsenal would never have had that unbeaten run, though interestingly enough Man United were the ones to end Arsenal's unbeaten run both home and away the following season. Any other team could have done that, but no it was Man United. A lot of people claim that the rivalry was at its peak between 1997-2005 and that's true as when you look at that period Arsenal won the Double in 97/98, then United won the Treble in 98/99 along with two consecutive titles the following two years, then Arsenal won the Double again in 01/02 that too winning at Old Trafford, United came back winning the 02/03 season in a tightly contested title charge with Arsenal, though they won the FA Cup, in 03/04 Arsenal would win the league unbeaten being labelled as 'The Invincibles' and Man United would win the FA Cup at their expense. Finally in 04/05 whereby both teams are pipped to the title by Chelsea, United settle for nothing and Arsenal only win the FA Cup. Consequently Man United won 4 titles in that period and Arsenal won 3 and to put with that a Treble, 3 consecutive league titles for Man United, then with Arsenal two Double seasons and an 'Invincible' season, to say that their rivalry wasn't closely contested would be the mother of all understatements. I've heard the arguments for the Man City - Liverpool rivalry but I mean on come on, nothing tops what we saw between Man United and Arsenal during their peak years, plus it wasn't just the success of both teams at hand it was the animosity and the contempt between the two teams that made it worth watching, City and Liverpool's rivalry is merely child's play compared to what was seen back then. After 2005 Arsenal went through a 9 year trophy drought and United kept on winning, but you could also say that the rivalry was driven by Keane and Vieira and as long as both players were on the pitch it would have always been a fiery and intense encounter. Vieira left in Summer 2005, then Keane followed not long afterwards in November of the same year. Once they had left, you could tell that the spark was going out, then Arsenal slowly started stripping their old guard with the likes of Pires, Bergkamp, Henry, Cole and Ljunberg all leaving shortly afterwards with Fabregas, Van Persie, Adebayor, Arshavin, Rocisky, Nasri and Sagna being seen as the future. Likewise United were focusing more on their younger talents with Rooney, Ronaldo, Carrick, Tevez, Evra, Vidic, Nani and Park Ji Sung so both sets of teams going for a new era. Arsenal were compromised from attaining the best players due to the funding for their new stadium at the time, then with Chelsea being a club superpower as well. United were going in a positive direction whereas Arsenal while competing on all fronts lacked the killer edge that Man United and Chelsea had. That's how their rivalry eventually fizzled out, of course there is still animosity due to that period between 97-05, but the games won't be as intense unless both sides are directly competing for the title and other competitions.
Yh those days United got special treatment but Arsenal played with so much heart especially Viera, they were able to outplay United's special treatment for a long time and actually managed to get the last laugh winning the F.A Cup.

When united players had passion 😔
Viera = Killer!
Early 2000s Arsenal - Manchester United matches were the best. Today's players make too much money to get mad at each other.
Back when it was real football
Nowadays such displays of passion will cause half the team to be rolling around hoping to get the other person sent off... how times have changed!
How was Viera the Aggressor, I guess will never know
That's how it is. They'll provoke you then when you react you are the aggressor.
@@stinga_ Word! That's so true. *I mean, Keane still looks mean*
Hope you get it😆😆😆
Now I truly believe Manchester United controlled the ref those days. They should stop moaning now is the turn of their noisy neighbours
I am a Untd.fans...
But i have to say..this two midfielder were my fav.of all time.
The two titans clash several times in their palying days..
A true great wall for for their team.
I really love their rivalry and competitive mindset. They both gave their everything for their respective team.
I really miss them these days..
Viera is real man. Stam such a wimp
Stam is much more suited for Viera, both are aminals, keane is scared of Viera, coming from a life long Man utd fan
As a City fan .... i do not think he was
"Keane is scared of Viera". Lifelong fan, you say? When were you born, 2010? He certainly wasn't afraid of him.
He always gave Vieira as good as he got from him. Keane won this game.
@@tanmaypandey7475 Is it the UFC or Football?
@@tanmaypandey7475 lol
@@barryb90 kane was always favored by the referees. That Man Utd team has too much assisst from the ref. especially against Arsenal.
The Intensity was great!! 🙆♂️🙆♂️
Football changed soooo much....
Ruud foulded viera like that & instead its viera that was sent off. Classic Utd robbery. Had the refs in they pockets
This is classic.
Watching from Greece.hi everybody.
MANCHESTER UNITED is the greatest football club in the world.period.
hi Greece

Wanna see this passion from present arsenal players... Would be refreshing
We won't survive with VAR days
That's Akin to saying I want to see red cards dished out like confetti
