I used to watch this video at home in the Midwest, dreaming of the chance to come to New York and see a show like their set at 55 Bar. Now I live in the city and have seen Adam and Chris play together at 55 Bar. Honestly a dream come true. I'm so thankful for the constant inspiration and joy that this documentary brings, let it remain on TH-cam forever!
@14: 14 “My practicing really consists of recording myself,(like) having a certain thought in my mind about what kind of feeling I want to express, and then recording what that sound like and then hearing it back, what sounds true, what sounds false (you know) what exactly is working and what’s not. Some of it’s not even about the notes; it’s about trying to find the frame of mind that I have to be in to express the things I want to express.”
This is what makes Chris Great not his super-human technical mastery of the saxophone not his seemingly infinite knowledge of the Canon of Jazz not his boundless improvisatory inventiveness but simply the refusal to play anything that does not feel true to him… For me there is no one in jazz today that can hold a candle to Chris. I wish there was, I am searching constantly for more truth…
@@wesleyprado2432 Sorry for the late reply, unfortunately it's not a single album. "Rumples" can be found on Chris Potters album "Ultrahang". The tune "Bounce" is on one of Nate Smith's album, "Kinfolk". The rest of the songs I don't know
Chris to me is a modern jazz giant, and this is a great and intimate film about his band. All of the players are great, I especially love Adam's guitar playing.
I've just discovered this band. Mindblown. Haven't been this excited about a saxophonist ever since I've heard Michael Brecker for the first time. Also, this Adam Rogers is a beast, too. Can't believe I didn't know about these guys.
It makes absolutely no sense but I'm ridiculously proud of Chris Potter. In Columbia, SC, circa late '80s, I was an absolute hack mucking about in school jazz bands and he was already a sax god, gigging weekly at a downtown venue and already immersed in student performing groups at USC. We are basically the same age and hail from the same neck of the woods, but that's about all we have in common.
This whole video stirs deep emotion and makes me want to cry and laugh at the same time. The pinnacle of human creativity and joy/sadness/introspect all rolled into one...
In my opinion, Potter is one of the three giants of contemporary saxophone playing: Joshua Redman, Mark Turner and Chris Potter. And I had no idea Nate Smith was as inventive and organic a composer as a drummer!
Still coming back to this monthly after 6 years of religiously listening to it. Definitely changed my life as a musician when I discovered this, and incidentally discovered Chris Potter, when I was 16 years old.
I saw each song about 20 times since I found this video, and it was yesterday :) IT IS CRAZY!!!!! I wish to see you four gentlemens LIVE making this wonderfull music which change my life completly!!!
I like this music very much, and the players have real roots. Chris soundS like a cross of Coltrane ans Sonny Rollins with a whole new language. GREAT.
I really like what Chris and his group are doing. The first time I saw him was in England playing in the Dave Holland band several years ago. I remember how he impressed in a terrific lineup that included Kenny Wheeler as a guest. He is a really nice guy with a terrific technique-he has really payed his dues and fully deserves the recognition that he is now getting. A great upload!
This is terrific. A great way enter into inner workings of the creat ive process of an outstanding group of Jazz musicians. Very exciting, inventive and joyous music.
Thank you for uploading! I love Chris Potter playing funk since I listened to Follow the Red Line, so i'm really happy to be able to check another gig of Train. One of my fav!
Great video. Interesting to see the group approach/practice the tunes and then run them live. I haven't seen Chris Potter live but his sound and improvs on here are some of the best I've heard online. Very cool.
This has been bugging me - do the bars of "7" at the end of the phrase in tweet really modulate to the pulse of the triplet, or are they just kinda fudged. either way killing
It is actually weird how it does kinda sound in between. I reckon its not a modulation and they're going for the groups of 7 16th notes thing (12,12,123). Although what do i know.
As I said, it's the solo section in the middle of the song. Pop Tune #1 begins quietly with a beautiful melody and then, at around the six-minute mark, there's a dramatic shift and it takes off into a blues/funk groove. Keep in mind, it's an improvisation so the track on the cd is different than the live performance but, I can assure you, it's just as dynamic.
hey guys does anyone knows where I can find the entire version of this amazing intro ??? transcribed the beginning... but still haven't found the rest of it yet !! thx very much, awesome video by the way
Not only is the music harmonically and rhythmically complex but thanks to those excellent drums this music is actually very accessible, in my opinion more accessible than ultrahang which makes me wonder why they didn't record songs like tweet and bounce and then release them on i-tunes. They may have incredible talent but I think that their business sense is poor.
I have been looking around for years to see if there is any unedited recording of this obviously phenomenal show anywhere. Purchasable through any sort of official channels, bootlegged, whatever. If anyone knows of such a thing please let me know.
Here is the "Manual" on how to burn. Listen to what the guys are talking about, it's all here. It ain't about getting off by spewing licks you shedded, but listening to what is really coming out and get out of the way so it can resonate through the band. Good luck on that, right? Still gotta go shedd now...
As far as I know, they have not. I spoke to Nate, the drummer, on Instagram a few months ago and he said they were recording a new record in December. So as long as that has not changed, I expect to hear these tunes on that!
Hey Raeven, Train can be found on the live Follow the Red Line record. Bounce was formally released on Nate Smith's Kinfolk record which came out earlier this year. I don't think any of the others have been released. Adam Rogers' DICE just put out their first record this past week and Nate plays on it so it's pretty similar to the groove based tracks. Great stuff!

RIP 55 bar 😢
When great Jazz and great filmmaking are combined, there is nothing better. Watch this closely.
+Christopher Pitts Seriously. Doesn't happen nearly often enough.
that last sentence kinda makes you sound like an asshole man, the video is great though I agree.
Love this so much

Nate Smith and Chris Potter...amazing musical chemistry.
One of the coolest quotes of ''Bemsha Swing'' I've ever heard at 19:53!!

Gotta watch this at least once every few months, so damn good
i come from nate smith's npr video because it reminded me a lot of chris' underground. Never knew he was the drummer here. Love this!

Nothing compares to being in N.Y. city to see great jazz...and funk.
In my opinion, Potter is one of the three giants of contemporary saxophone playing: Joshua Redman, Mark Turner and Chris Potter. And I had no idea Nate Smith was as inventive and organic a composer as a drummer!
I think I'm responsible for 84,398 of the 180+k views... this thing is a masterpiece.
same here.. I just want Flight to Oslo to get released in some form. The main melody is so FUCKING GOOD FUCKKK
doesn't help that the whole band fucking rip
I'm fucking obsessed with nate's drumming. He's not human :DDDD
agreed, what a fabulous groove meister! And that snare!
He is unreal

Did he really count in "Bounce" at rehearsal in the EXACT SAME TEMPO as at the concert? Blows my mind...
By far the best music doc out there... Have been revisiting this for years, and it's always so fucking inspiring!
Cool to hear that Adam practices the Bach violin stuff. It really never gets old.
Chris' steady and groovy timing on at beginning of the first tune, just...wow!
That is amazingly awesome and beautiful
" I don't think form I just think groove."
The rhythm sets it apart but the harmony is so creative. Love it. Redman, Branford Marsalis and Chris Potter on the same bill would be insane.
Imagine Joshua Redman, Brandford Marsalis, Chris Potter, Kenny Garrett, Mark Turner and Myron Walden being on the same bill!
This is phenomenal. Absolutely love the funk ideas.
This is the greatest music I've ever heard.
Incredibly Awesome!
I like this music very much, and the players have real roots. Chris soundS like a cross of Coltrane ans Sonny Rollins with a whole new language. GREAT.
Love this combination of musicians. Strong individual voices/timbres that sound perfect together.
Such a great documentary over the group, really highlights some exceptional performances! Nice work to the producers and to Chris Potter Underground!
It's times when you don't realize how good a band can sound together, and then you see this. :-)
so many killer moments. I keep coming back to this video.
This is probably my favorite video on youtube.
Thanks D.D. I'm honored. Jim
Flight to Oslo is so sick. I wish I could buy a recording of it somehow.
Out of this world.

I can't agree more. This is so great & inspiring! Thanks
OMG I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOR YEARS LITERALLY im so happy i get to hear this again and now know whos music to buy. AMAZING POWERFUL STUFF!
Open Minds is right,a fantastic set of musicians in constant exploration mode.
Starting at risk and failure; improving on that and moving forward from there. Yes!!
still hoping for a full version of tweet. We NEED it!
This is the best band.
such great musicians!
Tweet is one of the coolest heads I've ever heard. I want a recording of it.
Thank you for uploading! I love Chris Potter playing funk since I listened to Follow the Red Line, so i'm really happy to be able to check another gig of Train. One of my fav!
Thank you for this. Awesome
Toujours un plaisir de revoir cette video. Ce groupe est vraiment excellent.
Encore merci

I really wish that this album had been made!
Speechless, now heading to another direction..thanks Chris.
Já vi este vídeo umas 1000 vezes. Incrível

To me it feels like the last 7 16th notes of the 4/4 modulate to the 8th notes of the 7/8
Oh youre right its not 16ths, theyre triplets
god damn, THIS IS JUST UNBELEIVABLE!
as musicians, we can always find something that challenges our abilities!
I've been looking everywhere and i cant find a proper recording of Tweet...
Can anyone hook me up with a link or something??
Very inspirational... Thanks for even taking time to document the insigjht of t

Kinfolk, Nate Smith's album is out, finally we can buy BOUNCE!
Rest In Peace 55Bar 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I think I heard "the lick" at 14:27 but I can't be so sure because it's mind-numbingly fast.
Trent Jacobs The last three notes are part of it! First bit isn't the typical "lick" though.
I have been looking around for years to see if there is any unedited recording of this obviously phenomenal show anywhere. Purchasable through any sort of official channels, bootlegged, whatever. If anyone knows of such a thing please let me know.
Brilliant! ...and so important!!! 14 people??? What's not to like?!?!?!
The best.
Is there is CD recording of this? I need to have it!!!
+Blekmetla If only =(
Kinfolk, Nate Smith's album is out, finally we can buy BOUNCE!
Finally!!!
maravilhoso!
Um som inigualável, e outra não duvido quer o improviso dele esteja todo escrito, muito bom
It’s sad that the full audio for this is sitting on somebody’s hard drive somewhere and I can’t hear it.

Looove the intro of first tune.
What's the opening tune? Can I get full?
35:07 priceless!!
