Sadly king Carolus Rex lost this battle nine years earlier. In the year 1700 the battle of Narva took place there the Swedes had a little more than 10000 soldiers went into battle against the Russian Tsar who had around 37000 soldiers. After the battle Sweden had lost between 600-700 men (killed in the battle), the russians lost 9000 men in the battle and the Swedes took 20000 soldiers as prisoners! However, some time after the battle Sweden released the prisoners and the Tsar could rebuild his army again. Who knows what has happened if we haven’t released the prisoners, maybe we had won the battle of Poltava and concoured Russia. The battle of Narva is considered to be the greatest victory ever! My vote of Ruina imperii as next song.

I doubt the prisoners themselves made that much of a difference. During the time that Charles XII was stomping around the Baltic coast in Livonia the Tsar was heavily modernising the Russian army and tactics after the humiliating defeat at Narva, and eventually after Charles pushed into Russia they faced completely scorched earth in what is modern day Ukraine with no grain or pastures to raid and pushing the supply lines beyond their limits. Starvation and disease as winter came reduced the Carolean army to probably a fraction of its normal fighting strength. Then they faced a heavily modernised and fresh, well supplied and well fed Russian army of greater numbers on top of things. Pride and arrogance caused this. And I say this as a Swede myself. For all his military skill, Charles was extremely arrogant.

This was the start of the end, with the king wounded and not in command, lesser leaders tried but had no communication with each other, some even disliked each other. the battle plan was a clusterfuck from the beginning, add in the fact that the men was tired, hungry and met a well rested, reinforced Russian army. After this fight the king had to flee and seek shelter in the Ottoman empire.
To further elaborate on the bravery these men had to have during this kind of warfare. The standard tactic of this era was to stop marching about 100 meters away from each other and then fire. But Swedens army was always outnumbered due to the lesser population in the Swedish territories, therefore they had to utilize the army they had in the most effective way. So Karl XI (Carolus Rex's father) came up with 'Gå på' basically keep going, so the swedish army marched 50 meters more in a hail of bullets from the enemy, to have better accuracy.
And little fact about Tsar Peter I and his scorched earth tactic, when Karl XII army marched to Moscow, Tsar ordered to all civilians and troops retreat burn everything, wheat, fodder and houses. Avoiding the grand battle Russian Army lured Karl's Army inland. And when the moment came the battle of Poltava has begun. At this moment, Karl's army was exhausted and hungry. It predetermined success in the battle. Greetings from Russia!

King carolus was shot in the foot a day before the battle and left his plan to his generals and in the first half the swedish army was winning but a overconfident general ignoring carolus battle plan ordered a full attack on a fortified russian position and it failed with massive losses so swedish soldiers got the king to safety to the ottoman empire then the rest of the army retreated to sweden but they got captured on the way out of russia 20'000 strong army gone just like that which sweden could never replace if carolus wasn't shot and was in command i bet you he could of won easily

Just fast clarification: Carolus Rex - Charles XII of Sweeden, marched against Peter the Great - Petar I of Russia - they used the scorch land tactic - used against Napoleon and later on agains the Nazis burning all the resources and retreating so the enemy army can't rest or get any food. Carolus was one of, if not, the greatest king in the history of Sweeden i recommend reading about his rule, that one, was a MADMAN, insane, BUT, in Poltava - where the final battle was held, he coudln't lead his army and was the biggest loss of his career, the Sweeden imperial dream died there and he was captured by the Russians.
2 years late, but still: Some "historian" you turned out to be. First off, Sweden is spelled with 1 "E", not 2. Carolus was not captured after Poltava, he fled to the Ottoman Empire where he stayed for years trying to get them to declare war on Russia. That failed however, and the Ottomans grew so tired of the Swedish King being a free loader on them that they sent an army to capture him. This event is known as "The Skirmish at Bender" and Sabaton covered it with the song "The Royal Guard".
The Battle of Poltava was a disaster for a number of courses, The Swedish army had followed the Russian army for months but the Russian just avoided to fight and burned all land when retrieving and left nothing to the starving Swedish army.. The 🇸🇪 Coroleans was about 20.000 men but sicknesses and hunger was slowly decimating the strenght of the Swedish army. The Russians was 80.000 strong and dug in with great fortifications. Even with all those disadvantages the 🇸🇪 Coroleans almost won the battle.. When the Swedes used their shock tactics walking thrue the enemies fire with out firing back untill they could see the white in the enemy's eye, about 20-30 yards. Then drawing their cold steel and unleashing on the enemy. The Russian line was starting to break and panicking spread among the Russians. The Swedish Cavalry was the spearhead of the Swedish forces and at that point they could smashed the Russian line to pieces but because they was lost in unknown territory not more than a mile away they missed that chance.. The king had never lost a battle as commander but in poltava the King was shot in his leg the day before the battle and could not lead the soldiers in the front as usual.
