  • How does this old timing chain compare against a new? No measuring, no tools, just visual. Find them in car engines, bikes, ATVs, trucks, boat motors.

    dude you got two different chains there why they suppose to line up?

  • @cyrex686
    @cyrex686 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can also just see if it moves when you pull them apart and press them together. If there is slack, then you should get a new one. I'm going to post a video on my channel soon.

    im doing one now and the cam chain isnt lining up with the sprocket teeth,its skipping on sprocket. prob got bent valves

      ... and a busted piston? Bent connecting rod? Yes, if it is skipping teeth, it is way too long. Here is geometry why a chain does not fit the sprocket O-ring bike chain care myths

    The stretched chain is the upgraded version chain and you got old version chain brand new to replace it so your new chain is going to be weaker then the old chain you taken out

    hi mate can u help me out? i went in a garage and the guy said my timing chain has been stretched but the car drives normally without any problems but sometimes it doesnt start first time but always second time. also no engine management lights have come on? should i still replace it or just drive it as much as i can

      Timing chain is like engine oil. Deterioration is unnoticeable until catastrophic engine failure. If the stretched chain skips a tooth and the valves punch a hole in the piston or the head casting, that`s gonna hurt the wallet. I`d change the chain as per maintenance schedule, about 2-4 hr job for a technician.

      theoverengineer it will cost 300-400 pound to replace timing chain but i would rather just wait until the car gets screwed up then i will just scap it rather spending that much. do u know how long it will take until the chain fucks the engine up? but it wont damage the engine like timing belt does right? like when the timing belt snaps it totally fucks up the engine and everything else

      Chain is just as bad as belt. Mechanic might be running a scam, chain might be perfectly fine, change only by the book.

      @kay2382 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      theoverengineer what do u mean by the book? and how do u know if the chain has been stretched? funny thing is am sure its not scam because the mechanic said they dont change or replace timing chains in their garage he told me to ask other garages lol

      Deterioration is unnoticeable by driving until catastrophic engine failure, but It has a spring-loaded idler, usually hidden from view, it could be at the end of its travel. Manual has maintenance schedule when they expect the chain to be too long.

    Your answer to whether I should buy a new chain is to buy a new chain?

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, depends on part availability, time to take apart everything again later, etc.

    My lower timing chain was a little longer than the new one I got and the mechanic said it was the wrong chain. Couldn't have stretched in length?

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mechanic might be right, go with actual part numbers, not visual matching.

      Lord Kingdom change your blinker fluid, it helps lubricate the cams so the chain will form fit and work properly again

    No $hit Sherlock ! You put up 2 chains, new and old and talk your thing like champion !!! How sweet is that ? Now tell me, how you gonna check this if you aint got no NEW SHINY CHAIN to fekking compare to ???

      +Offroad man Oh, it involves 2 ancient secret arts.
      One is called calculating factory original length. It takes hard concentration and counting , say 10 links, but the more the better, then multiplying the original single link length by this number. Very difficult. Only a few dare attempt it. (say, 20 x 3/8 = 7.5)
      The other is even harder, by using the elusive skill of reading a tape measure when a chain is pulled tight. (say, 7.75)
      Then it has to be taken to a math professor who calculates %. If it`s more than 2% worn, garbage. (7.5 / 7.75 x 100 = 96.7%, worn beyond limit)
